    I think you probably know this already, but we don’t follow your journey because of time goals. There’s plenty of that on social media… You provide such a great perspective and I’ve learned so much about running from following along on your journey. Even when I was injured and bummed I couldn’t run I still wanted to watch your videos. We appreciate you!

    Hi Coach, I'm sorry that your marathon was not a good experience in my home town. BUT, I hope this makes you feel better. You have been such great help for me all thru my training to get me to be part of this year's marathon. This was my first, this was a goal that I set for myself and having gone thru so many obstacles you helped getting me there. In my early 20's I was told that I might be in a wheelchair by my 30's due to a health issue; I used this as fuel to prove this person wrong. I ran the marathon, crossed that finish line and this has been an experience like no other. Thank YOU for all your support!

    Your content is always genuine and this is no exception. Thank you for sharing this unexpected battle. It shows how sometimes things beyond our control force us to do the absolute best with what we are presented with. The obstacles can come in many forms and this time it was an unusual bio-anomaly.
    Bottom line is you did the absolute best you could on the day and that's amazing! Your training and consistency prepares you even when it's "not your day". Those same ideals are helping many of us achieve greater things than we though we could as well.

      Thank you, Thomas.❤️ Looking back, now that I've had more time to process, I'm really proud of what I was still able to accomplish. People keep talking about parts of the race and I literally don't recall these things because I was so focused on just getting through to the other side. I know it took a lot more grit than the ones where everything came together like I hoped for.

    Thanks for sharing. Marathons aren't easy. So many people make it sound like a leisurely stroll and it's definitely not. And it's definitely okay to feel down after so much work when things don't work out the way you hoped.

    Jane I love what you said about creating a community and being a part of these amazing people’s lives. I decided this year to get my certification as a run coach and this is one of the major reasons that drove me to do it. I am trying to get myself out there, share my experience and connect with people. I love watching your channel and many others, but I am usually the observer. I am working on getting myself from the observer side to add my knowledge and help others as well. Thank you for sharing your story, tips and being a great supporter for this community. I am so happy you kept posting and building this. ❤

      Good for you! As an introvert myself, I have always been an observer as well. But my teaching background and going from having no clue how to run a marathon to figuring out what I needed to do to qualify for Boston, I knew I could add value to other runners on their journey.     Jane, your videos and posts are always so inspirational. Your transparency is enlightening and much appreciated - and yes, you are allowed to feel all the feelings! At Mile 12, I saw my wife and daughter and told them I felt like I had nothing left (although this was my 26th Chicago). But I managed to gut it out to the finish. Sometimes, when this happens you feel like you are the only one having a rough day. I always enjoy your insights and how you keep it real - keep doing what you are doing. And looking forward to hearing what's next!

      Phew, we both made it!! Funny in those moments along the way it feels like you will never see the finish line. Sorry to hear you have a rough day and wow, just goes to show you can know a course inside and out, have all the experience in the world and still have a rough day.     Great job, Jane. Achieving a huge goal such as the Chicago marathon whilst not feeling like you could is in itself a benchmark of the running process; you've acknowledged as much in so many words in your other videos. I really liked the reminders that you wrote on your forearm, especially as they added a very personal note for you to look at during the run. I did something nearly the same for my second half-marathon, two weeks after my first one in which I finished just over a certain time threshold that I had earmarked for myself. One of my favorite sports figures has a tattoo on his left forearm, a six-line homage to Samuel Beckett's "Worstward" poem, and without quoting it verbatim, it basically means that no matter how well we do overall, or how much we achieve, some part of us is going to be left wanting for more, or realizing that we could have done better than we did. I paraphrased a shortened version of his tattoo, in Sharpie on my arm that morning, achieved the goal that I'd set two weeks earlier, and stayed wanting for an even better P.R. in the future afterward. Again, well done, great video, and we'll all keep showing up, thanks in part to you, Coach!

      Gosh if this isn't the truth!! I worked so hard to get sub 3:30 at Boston and when I got 3:29 on the nose I wondered why I couldn't have been 1-second faster to be in the 3:28s! That is so dumb and silly but so my personality haha. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and yes, we keep going and giving our best!

    You did amazing Jane! I’m so proud of you.
    I ran my latest marathon on October 14th and with your wonderful TH-cam channel, I was able to complete it at almost 61 years old. I was one of three women running the marathon between 60-69.
    Use this Chicago experience as something to learn and grow from. I’m sure what you went through is similar to one of another runner who might share their insights. 😊

    Coach Jane, thank you for being such an inspiration to me! For what it’s worth, I had a very similar race once when it turned out my whole family later came down with the flu. I was like you - some buggy symptoms the night before but fine in the morning and then the race was about my body just focusing all its energy on fighting the bug : would not take fuel in or hydration in the same way I had practiced 1,000 times- no “get up and go”, no joy from the journey, just heads down and get through. It was confusing as I never got fully sick but I figured out that it was just a low grade version of a bug. So sorry you went through that - but love your courage, honesty, and perspective! Thank you for all you do to help us learn and improve as a community!! ❤

    After watching this, something that comes to mind is what I've heard Tony Robbins say before: "It’s not about achieving the goal. It’s about who you become in order to achieve the goal. The juice is in the growth." It's hard to see you feeling this way after all the work you've put in. I ran Detroit the week after you ran Chicago and had a similar experience. I got sick the day before and didn't end up having the race I was capable of having. It took me a little time to come to terms with it but I lean on the growth during this process and how I've changed. I know there will be better days and better marathons!
    Two idea to consider that helped me on race day. 1) Waking up earlier (3:30am for a 7am start) and use that time to relax, eat, hydrate, and think. 2) Stop drinking 90 minutes before the start and allow yourself ample time to use the bathrooms. I'm similar to you in that I need to go 3-4 times before the race. All this might help with digestion and feeling better during the run.
    Last thing, I stumbled across one of your videos back in February. You said a few things that I've heard 100 times before but the way you said it just resonated with me. It was that video that triggered a whole new appreciation for running and I've since gotten back into running and taken on the biggest and best training block ever. I've never been in better shape. And everything started with your video. I've since watched it 4-5 times and am always amazed in how simple the message was but how profound of an impact it had on me.

      Hi David!! To the journey is right - so much more to come for us both!! Congrats on Detroit - those finish lines are always earned! Thank you for your ideas - I think getting up earlier and just taking time to be still, etc. would help because I think maybe it came from a place of anxiety vs. true indigestion/a bug. But I don't know for sure.
      Wow, that's really kind to share and it makes me happy to know my words had that kind of affect on you. I told an athlete just yesterday you never know who you're inspiring but I promise you are, so keep doing your thing and being you. This is an example of that. Curious which video?

      I think it must have been the sequence in which you listed your 5 strategies. Those strategies along with my internal dialogue at the time!
      1 - run more days per week (well yeah, duh but I need to rest in between my hard runs)
      2 - run higher mileage (again, duh but I need to recover between my runs)
      3 - run mostly EASY miles (hmmm, I definitely don't do that)
      4 - concept of cumulative fatigue (well, I don't even get to that point because I need to take a lot of rest days from hard running)
      5 - better nutrition (I've always tried to outrun my sub-par diet but maybe it's time to improve that. Hmm....maybe I need to rethink some things. I've plateaued for years now and "my way" is not getting the results I want)
      Fast forward 6 months and I ran a PR by 13 minutes, while being sick!

    It’s hard when Mother Nature decides to unleash her bugs on you at the worst possible time. But you can’t control that bad luck. You still gave your best and although it wasn’t a great experience you will take so many learnings from it and can grow and develop as a runner. You’ve got this!

    Coach Jane, I'm so sorry to hear you had a difficult race! I'm glad to hear you're getting past this, remember you are awesome and inspire a lot of people. I was once told, "enjoy the journey"; we sometimes have poor races and can't explain why, we're human and unexplained things happen beyond our control. Glad to be part of your journey.

      The highs wouldn't be nearly as worth it without the lows. I just really wanted this one to be one of the highs LOL! It's all good - it's been nearly 2 weeks now since I recorded this and I've definitely moved on. Plus there was just so much good from the weekend that makes me super happy.     Amazing recap and you should be so proud of yourself. I have this theory that our bodies and our training go in these little cycles (I could go on and on) but we do go through these cycles where we just don't have it. Sometimes for a few weeks we go out and running just feels effortless, other times it feels normal, and other times it feels hard....too hard. All any of us can ask is our A race doesn't line up with those downward cycles. You got caught on this one but there just isn't anything you can do. I wouldn't overthink this for even one second. As a side note - every year I go in the same ultra marathon in my home town here. Last year I just didn't have it. I trained so hard but it wasn't there that day. I never had that "pep" like you talk about. I didn't change anything and this year I had the A race of my life. I just happened to hit that race when I was in one of those "running feels like nothing" cycles and I crushed it. It's not that you are getting older (I'm older than you). You still have years and years of PRs ahead of you. It just wasn't your time this year.... you got this!! Don't change a thing!!

    thank you for being so vulnerable and open about your experience.. it's inspiring especially for me who's a back of the pack runner :) i just ran my 2nd half marathon in Philly this past weekend - and i had a better experience than my first half in Brooklyn early this year. I had tummy issues too like you did! hoping to run my first marathon in 2024 (fingers crossed!)

    Thank you for sharing your experience! I wish it could have gone better for you, but it's a very helpful reminder that marathons are really, really hard and there are no guarantees. No matter how fit and prepared you are, you still need a little bit of luck on race day for everything to go well. Great job on pushing through the discomfort and negative thoughts and to keep doing the best that you could do on that day. That's a win!

    Such a terrific recap Jane. I'm sorry you didn't have the experience you hoped for but your perseverance is just so inspiring. You have helped me so much as I followed your beginner marathon plan and completed my first marathon the same day as Chicago. I'm 55, just a two year runner and have enjoyed your videos throughout my journey. My race was ran during terrible weather conditions with post tropical storm Philippe raging here in Nova Scotia which brought 65 km wind gusts and horizontal driving rain. But I reached my goal of finishing in 4 hours, 58 mins and you are a big part of my success. Thank you for being the person and coach you are. You are quite special and I appreciate you so much. Congrats on another marathon completed and here's to many more.

    Personally, I would have had the deep dish after the race (Chicago has excellent thin crust too). That is a real tummy bomb and maybe put you over the edge. As I said in the Community posts, 3:38 is very respectable. I ran my first at age 43 (after vowing never to do one since marathoners are insane) and did like 15 after that. So, you have plenty of time left. We hope you come back to Chicago to run a big PR. Thanks for all that you do!

      Haha yeah maybe. I really didn't eat that much of it and never felt full and felt fine on Sat. But who knows. Humble pie either way, and sometimes we need that.     I needed to hear this, thanks for being open & honest. I had an amazing year last year, but this year has been tough. I’m not sure why, maybe I have been dealing with more stress? Just hasn’t been a great year for me, along with some Tendonitis. I also ran Chicago this year and it was so tough for me. I’ve decided to just consider this year as my down year and I’m hoping for that wonderful running feeling to return next year!

    I know what it is like to be disappointed when a race does not go your way, but I admire how you dug deep here and kept going. Amazing.
    Not knowing what caused this to happen would drive me crazy. I guess you just have to assume it was just the day.
    I am betting you have not seen the end of your PR's. Keep up the grat work!

      LOL it definitely was driving me crazy. But now I'm OK with it. Bad races happen...stomach stuff happens. My only real fear is claustrophobia and very crowded races like that are not my favorite. I think that was part of it. I think I can do better to navigate race morning to be more calm. I like to think I have one more marathon PR in me...I sure hope so!!

    The strugglebus is real so hats off for soldiering on and finishing an awesome run capping off with a BQ! And more importantly, you didn’t peak in high school 😂. You’re still young as an endurance athlete with more PRs to come. Keep your head up. Patience and consistency and continue positively impacting so many others ❤.

    Been waiting a long time for this . . . :o) Despite the disappointment, this is the best Chicago recap I've seen so far by the way you describe all the feelings. Some people act as though they dont have any feelings at all, it's all just so mechanical. Even the winners cant describe a race the way you did here. Ive never heard a word from Ruth Chepng'etich and how she thought it went for her.

      Yes, I recorded it the Thursday after and then my family went on a cruise with no internet so it was just sitting in the can for a bit haha. And wow, thank you for these kind and heartfelt words. I know we can all relate to these feelings - life is full of disappointments for us all. I told my husband the morning after the race (which is when I was the most sad) that I just wish I didn't care so much, and he replied that that simply wasn't the answer. And I know that's true.     It was so great to be able to say I got to meet you and run with you in person. I'm so thankful for all of your wisdom, advice and story telling. Life is not always letting us be who we want to be all the time, and the best thing you can do is recognize that. And you have! Keep moving forward. We are the lucky ones!       It certainly wouldn't be a journey if our goals were just a given. Sometimes life throws a tough day and we get to rise to see how we push through. I'm here for it with all the mixed feelings LOL. So great to meet you, Chris - really appreciate you coming to the shake-out run!! Congrats on your race! I would love to do Grandma's. Honestly the size of that race is perfect for me - Chicago was amazing and also so overwhelming. Maybe not '24 but for sure I will do it!

    no worries, often it happens to everyone, you put in the time and effort to an event and things go south. The key is just smile and laugh about it in the end. Often it just a good life experience.
    I just had my first event get cancelled on me. I was on for the Twin Cities marathon back on Oct 1st. and just less then 3 hours , to start we all got notice, that I was totally ready for and felt It would get a BP etc. anyways that how things roll out sometimes. Thanks for sharing and I listened to the whole thing too as well. Good luck on next event, things will be better for sure.

    Wonderful honesty and perspective. Count me as one who has benefited from your channel. I've used your videos to improve my fueling and slow down my easy runs. I ran the Long View Marathon a week ago and met my sub-4 goal on my 3rd attempt, running 3:56 with a negative split. A long, difficult and amazing process. 🙂

      Thank you! Weather was perfect, low 30's to high 40's. Yes, I've just done the Longview marathon twice. My wife and sister ran the half and had a great experience.@@runningwithjane

    Qualifying time is a little harder than Chicago, But If you want to complete
    6 star marathon, the next one should be the New York!

    I just ran my first marathon in Venice this Sunday and your advice helped me a lot :) I really enjoyed the race itself but I wasn’t expecting how awful the following days would be 😁

    Oh I’m so sorry you had a bad race too. I had such a bad cold. I couldn’t really enjoy it as I’d want to either. I finished 5 minutes slower than Boston this year and I had the same feeling as you - at least I’ve qualified for Boston. I was just relieved to cross the finish line!

      Wish we both could have better experiences, but we both have done this enough times to know it won't always go our way unfortunately. So in my head I thought my BQ time was 3:40 so just pushed to at least get under that, but realized right after I age up in 2025 so got more cushion than I though. Silver linings LOL! Glad you got your BQ too! Onwards and upwards!

      TBH it was A LOT for me. I don't know if the stomach stuff was more anxiety induced? I'm not sure. In Boston it definitely breaks up whereas this felt crowded the whole time. But gosh it's also so amazing to have so many people in one place celebrating the sport we love!!! Congrats on your race, Milo, and hope you are happy to be back home.

    appreciate your journey! makes me want to train for another marathon! Listening to what you're describing... how do you normally carb load for your races? I've read experiences of people who.... *overload* on their carbs the day before and then they end up retaining way more water, feeling bloated and having heavy legs on race day. That's my only theory.
    Anyways, great information to have. Thank you! I'm hoping to do Chicago maybe in 2025/2026. I'm probably fast enough to time qualify so i'll have to either rely on the lottery or get faster this next year.

      Luckily Chi is about 50/50 chance with lottery, but it definitely is nice to have the security of qualifying if you're able!
      So what you're describing in terms of retaining water and too many carbs is certainly possible...I didn't really do much different than at Boston, and even with a "carb load" I really don't get too crazy with it. But something was most certainly off and may have just been a bad day. And that happens unfortunately. Certainly could have been worse so thankful it wasn't. Appreciate the support!!

    It sounds like we had very similar experiences! I felt ok (but not great) until mile 22 when I got a side stitch that forced me to slow down considerably (but not walk). I crossed the line just under 3:36 feeling disappointed but happy I was able to grind through. Bad days happen, but hopefully, that means both our next races will go much better :) I have to keep reminding myself fitness is cumulative.

      Grind is definitely the right word! I've never really had to do that in recent years, and it definitely taught me something that maybe I needed to realize for myself. That I'm capable even when it sucks LOL. You're so right - it all builds and all counts! Congrats on your marathon - always something to celebrate no matter what!

    I LOVE your pod casts!! Hope to run with you in the future. Do you have any last minute tips.. I'm running Marine Corp Marathon on Sunday in DC. I live in the area so have been acclimated to Temps around here. What do you do for sudden weather change. Past few weeks we've had Temps around 60. This morning was 38!! On Sunday weird weather pattern coming in and there looking at 82 to 85d degees.. krazy!! I'm following your suggestions for hydration and fuel from old podcasts. I'm 62, 1st Marathon and there are 3 cut off points. Don't hit your out. Don't have much lee way to lower my pace. Soooo... getting a little nervous. Trained since March so don't want to DNQ... any tip would help. 😊 Thank you again!!

      Hi Regina! Gosh, those warm temps make it so hard. I really hope that they give a bit more leeway to runners with the cutoff so that people don't push themselves too hard with the conditions, but I know they are typically at the mercy of streets needing to open back up etc. Just try not to stress about that part and control what you can! Biggest advice is to hydrate well all week and hyper hydrate with electrolytes the day before and make sure you are using electrolytes (sodium) during the race as well. Keep listening to your body - first and foremost your job is to make sure you stay healthy. You got this!

    @14:45 you mentioned the "Pee along the side", well I ran LA Marathon in 92 19 K runners(104 degrees and we loaded up on water and Gatorade). I'm here to tell ya that until mile 2 there were yellow rivers!

    Great information - Congratulations on your race! Sorry it didn't go quite as you wanted, but those "perfect" races seem so rare. The expo looks so much like the Berlin Marathon expo I did last month. Maybe it was that pizza that got you? So much cheese would definitely bother me before a race.

      Thank you! Usually I can eat whatever, but it definitely is possible. That Chi pizza prob just hits different LOL (except my friend ran a 5-min. PR eating the exact same thing haha!) I'm 2 for 3 on great races for the year, so I will take it. Sometimes we get a bad one and that's the breaks.

      @@runningwithjane Maybe categorize the things you want to address in order to logically break up your videos. Instead of one 40 minute video you have 4 videos that are 10 minutes long that you can put out consistently. This also will help you not struggle for content. Also look at your drop rate (length where people stop watching to guide how long your videos should be. It seems most creators are doing more short form videos (15 minutes or less). For example with todays 38 minute videos you could have done a video on the lead up, a video on the race itself, and then a post race analysis where you discuss things that went right and wrong along with how you plan to fix them for next race.

      Thank you so much! I've been using the Garmin Forerunner 55 for just over 2 years. It's a really great watch if you don't need a ton of bells and whistles.

    Part of me feels for you because having runs like this suck, but welcome to the real world. I was surprised to see you out on the town eating different foods, keeping stress high. Something to consider next time. Brush it off, and get back to training. You got this!

      At marathon number 13, I really didn't do anything differently this time than I always do. I'm lucky to pretty much never had stomach problems...this time I did and that's the breaks. At the end of the day, I wouldn't have changed a thing about Saturday and getting to bring this community and the team together. Def a good time to reflect and move on, like you said.

    Hey Jane! Have you any experience with two marathons within a month of each other? I’m hoping to do Berlin then NYC and was curious the best way to handle them. First one is a tune up, second one is the race? A second mini taper?

      Hi Matthew! Though I don't typically advise it, yes, I have written plans/coached for a handful of people who have done it to hit 2 majors. I think the biggest thing is everyone is so different in the recovery. Some people bounce back fast and then there's me, who almost got a bib for NYC this year, and today was like, there is no way I'd be ready for a marathon LOL. I'd personally recommend to treat first one like a long progression training run and race the second, but in your case Berlin is the better course to PR on if that's what you're going for.

      Hopefully my newest video will help a bit with this! Easy is great in base...you can also throw in a fun 5k/10k and do some faster training for that!

      Yes, definitely can do too much too soon. Recover from your race first then can build back to baseline mileage and add in some speed days if you want. @@maaudiosubs

    sounds like you're being hard on yourself. also sounds like marathons are really stressful. that's one reason i'm starting with a 50k trail race - it genuinely sounds easier (less stressful) than a marathon

      Definitely hard on myself when it comes to my running, and I'm OK with that. Sometimes wish I was different and also know that's me and has helped me get to where I am, also. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE the marathon distance. Last 5 were amazing this one wasn't, so that's OK and that's the way it goes. Wishing you best of luck on your trail ultra!
