    Joan Collins said Harry was the most beautiful man she'd ever laid eyes on. They had a fling, ehich didn't go down well in Hollywood. When she wrote about him in her 1980s biography, the publishers edited it out for the American version - unbelievable.

    Absolutely beautiful!! Levern Hutcherson did a magnificent job singing as Harry Belafonte was lip syncing but Otto Preminger should have allowed Mr. Belafonte to sing the songs himself. At that time Mr. Belafonte was bigger than Elvis and headlining in major venues throughout the country.

      Linda Williams Hi! I could understand Hollywood having him dubbed in "Porgy and Bess," but he could have done beautifully here with his own fine voice. I've read enough about Mr. P, that I'm glad I never met him. Thanks for writing!varadero

      Varadero1839 Thank you for the thoughtful reply. After reading the autobiographies of Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier and Diahann Carroll, I am glad I didn't meet Otto Preminger also. Too add to my comments above, it is obvious the only principal character in Porgy and Bess who did not sing is Sidney Poitier. With the exception of Dorothy Dandriedge (Marilyn Horne's excellent voice was used) who performed in various dinner clubs, Sammy Davis, Jr., Diahann Carroll and of course Pearl Bailey used their own voices in the film. So I really don't understand the reason for all performers with the exception of Mr. Poitier having to lip sync.

    • @TruthSerum101
      @TruthSerum101 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Diahann Carroll's voice was not used to sing Clara in the movie version of Porgy. The talented Miss Caroll has been many things through the years, but a soprano ain't one.

      How could anyone dub Harry Belafonte??!! Makes me soo mad they did that to a lot of celebrities who could sing better then the dub singer, Angela Lansbury, Debbie Reynolds, etc. Dubbed her in singing in the rain they learned nothing from the movie.

    • @KajiVocals

    Again, though not quite Mr. B at the singing helm, he did one hell of an impersonation. As noted earlier Mr. LaVerne Hutcherson performed the vocal, and did a spectacular job. Thank you so much for writing!

      Said it before; it just wasn't his time when everybody but Pearl Bailey was dubbed. Beautiful film, but if this bugs you, don't ever watch the original 1959 Preminger version of "Porgy and Bess," with Dorothy Dandridge and Sidney Poitier. Only non-dubbed actor there was Sammy Davis, Jr!

    Dis flower dat you threw my way Has been my frien' by night an' day. I saw it fade an' lose its bloom, But still it kept a sweet perfume. In my cell, through ev'ry darkened hour, On my lonely eyes lay dis flower, An' so I'd sleep de whole night through An' dream of you, an' dream of you. Den, I'd wake up, wid no one near me, An' talk fo' de jail walls to hear me~ "She ain' de bes', Dere all de same! Like all de res', She jus' a dame." Den I tol' myse'f I was ravin', Dere wuz jes' one t'ing I wuz cravin'~ It wuzn' food, It wuzn' dough, I guess you know Dat it wuz you. I only saw you once... Once wouldn' do! Bellefonte was not trained to sing this song. Give Hutcherson is due credit. Carmen is an opera not a musical. Marilyn Horne also sang for Dorothy Dandridge for the same reason. ABD that's baby oil not perspiration. so should Harry have worked up a sweat?

    Nothing against this, Harry Belafonte is not singing, his voice is dubbed, but listen to Jonas Kaufmann Royal Opera House sing this aria superior vocally, emotionally and intellectually, the pianissimo at the end of the aria, such vocal control, beyond the capabilities of many opera singers.

    • @emailvonsour

      Beyond is own capabilities. Kaufmann's is not a legitimate pianissimo.

      Sorry that you hadn't time to read the comments that I uploaded when I first posted this clip 7 years ago. I'm a big fan of Mr. Bocelli, but the other Mr. B, (Harry,) never sang this song in the movie. Please read the uploaded comments again and you'll see that Harry was dubbed by Mr. Hutcherson.
