+kboxer5555 Its been told that after they were done filming this show, Doris had slept for 3 days straight...she was totally drained.... This is one of my FAVORITE MOVIES!
You would never think they had once told her she would never walk again after she and her friends got hit by a train when she was 13!!!!!!!!!!! I love this song!
I knew she broke both her legs badly, and wasn't able to walk for 3years, which meant she couldn't carry on her dream as a professional dancer. And during them 3years instead listened to a lot of records and started singing instead. But I didn't know it was a train that caused her injuries, crazy.
The athletic ability that Doris Days shows throughout this entire scene is nothing short of incredible!! Lifting herself up by just her leg muscles, not once, not twice, but three times.. well, it proves she was in tip-top condition during filming! Not to mention her voice was in its prime as well !
Doris Day was such a fantastic dancer! I've long been a fan of hers but somehow never saw this film until recently. I can't get over how she jumps up and down on the bar and at 2:16 she stands up from a cross-legged sitting position with no assistance! That's strength and talent! :)
Yep. She's all over the set doing this, including being raised and lowered by her arms, and she jumps all over the stagecoach in the opening number, and she's never even slightly out of breath. Seriously fit lady there!
Actually, she first started performing as a dancer, but switched to singing after she was hurt in a car accident. She recovered, but found she liked singing better, but obviously, she could still kick up her heels for these musicals when she had to.

Yes, yes, yes. Calamity was on over Christmas. Love all her films. Great, great talent and I feel, a great lady. Miss her and her calibre. RIP Doris Day.😊
Watch the lift up into the upper balcony, and then when she is lowered back down again. On the way down, I cannot see any safety equipment and it even seems that her full weight is already across the railing before the two cowboys grasp her arms. Yet she puts out her arms with perfect timing and confidence. Incredible.
I still think it's one of the most wonderfully-effervescent and life-affirming scenes Hollywood ever filmed. Ms Day is one of the things that will always make me have faith in America.
This woman is literally my IDOL, she has been since my Nanna showed me Calamity Jane when I was about 8 years old. Since then, I have all her albums, movies. She's soooo talented, and she's still going strong looking after animals and running a sanctuary, I believe she's 96 soon. Xxx
