Recognize, Repent, & Repair: The Tulsa Massacre

  • Every Wednesday, Dr. Turner marches for reparations through Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was here, a century ago on May 31, 1921, that an affluent Black community was violently destroyed in the Tulsa Race Massacre. The historic Vernon American Methodist Episcopal Church, where he preaches, is the only edifice that survived the massacres in his Greenwood District neighborhood. Dr. Turner marches rain or shine weekly for reparations intended to help heal the community that has been hurting for generations.
On September 22, 2021, it was announced that Rev Dr. Turner would be leaving the Vernon AME Church to serve the Empowerment Temple AME Church in Baltimore.

I live in NYC. It is not uncommon for people to say things like Oklahoma has no culture.
Just because a history is sad/terrifying and there’s a culture based on segregation and violence, that doesn’t mean “no culture.”
It means there’s a history that must be remembered, and a multiplicity of cultures, from the Mexican, Honduran, Guatemalan, Vietnamese and Hmong communities that populate East Tulsa, to the African American communities primarily, but not only, in North Tulsa, to the impoverished white communities in West Tulsa, to the rural/middle class white communities in South Tulsa, and the wealthier white communities in midtown, culture exists, it’s just been fettered by segregation and governmental incompetence for years and years.
Our culture is a culture of racial conflict, neglect, and segregation, and the lessons have never been so prescient. It’s not trendy; it’s a battle ground I stood on the front lines of for years.
I hate a lot about where I’m from, but in this current political environment, it makes me happy to see Greenwood getting national recognition.
Now let’s see the documentary about the rest of “culture-less” Tulsa. There might be more to learn than people realize.

I work in local government and we have jobs ready to go for any aboriginal applicants to get priority, 60k a year and paid training/ education, we can't get one applicant. While a small minority of indigenous people I have met have been motivated and inspiring, the majority just want to sit back and collect welfare while complaining the government is racist, if there is a solution to this , I would love to hear it.

“Every time I fight God, I lose.” Man, I felt that! Idk know what the right thing to do in situations like this is. Obviously what happened never should have happened. It was a disgusting horrific PREVENTABLE tragedy. But I’m not sure if reparations are the answer. They might be, I just don’t know. Because there’s two sides to the argument, right? One side says that the descendants of the people affected by the massacre would potentially be more successful, better educated, and just in an entirely different place in life if it had never happened. That can’t be proven, and I don’t know all the stories of the descendants, but it makes sense, and it’s entirely possible. The other side of the coin is, the people alive today have nothing to do with what happened so long ago, so why should their money and their tax dollars go towards something that happened when they weren’t even alive? I wish I had the answers… I’ve been instructed by the audible voice of God, and it’s impossible to ignore, no matter how intimidating the instructions are. So if he really did hear God’s voice then I lean towards reparations. But even then, I don’t think he said that God told him to demand reparations, only to go out there and tell people what happened. So maybe God wants them to have reparations or maybe he just wants the history of the massacre to be heard so it never happens again. Again, I don’t know. But whatever the outcome is, it’s clearly part of God’s plan, so I’m going to leave it to Him, because He’s obviously far wiser than I am!

If someone is done wrong by society and the present local governing body does nothing in that time to repair or restitute damages, it has to be done at some point. It seems like common sense to me, but it’s also biblical: “I will restore the years that the cankerworm and locust have eaten”. Also, the way you put it, “He’s demanding,” makes it sound like he’s coming in an hostile manner when in reality he’s pushing for severely delayed justice. In the Bible, this is also referred to as “righteous indignation”. He’s not hurting anyone, he’s standing in the gap for God and demanding Pharaoh to pay up, so to speak.

My own people the Boricua or Puerto Ricans, have been used in inhuman sterilization program going from 1940-1970s, should those used in these experiments which resulted in a third of all Hispanic women sterilized on the island not be compensated? Should all the crimes committed within the lifetime of our parents and grandparents by the white majority be ignored and unrecognized? No recompense for what was done? What kind of a man refused to even consider reparations for the many crimes committed? Should the criminals keep the land, money, and resources they've stolen, but the victims receive nothing? Would you want that done to you and your people? Would you be okay with no reparations if this happened to your family?

@@radagast1184 that's not what I said. This isn't an individual's reparation, but a country's. The USA right up to the 1990s was enacting racist policies with deliberate and unfair outcomes for nonwhites. The benefit resulted in a wealthier median for white Americans at the expense of nonwhites. From burning down successful nonwhite areas, to stealing the lands of Indians, and using nonwhites in experiments. Whites always benefited and the country insured that nonwhites rarely got justice. Your position is ignore the destruction of Black Wall Street. Ignore the lives lost. Ignore the land stolen. Ignore the wealth stolen from these people and many others who ARE ALIVE to this day. Ignore that, why is that? What makes their lives worth less in your mind?
Did you disagree when Reagan gave reparations to Japanese Americans for what the USA did in WW2? How about the slave owners after the Civil War? The USA gave the people who committed treason reparations to rebuild their plantations then ignored the promise of 40 acres and a mule for all the formerly enslaved. Who do you think benefited from all this? If America has precedence of giving money and land for free to people, then why not for the crimes committed these past 100 years?

The park was dedicated in 2010.
