  • Did you know that Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is sinking faster than any other city in the world because of drilling for drinking water, the weight of its skyscrapers and rising sea levels? The problem has gotten so bad that the Indonesian government recently proposed to relocate the capital elsewhere, which is kind of a big deal. But how do the people of Indonesia feel about this potential move? Are they for or against this proposal? We hit the streets of Jakarta to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Even if Indonesia relocates its capital city elsewhere, Jakarta will still be overcrowded. This is due to the fact that most of Indonesia's economic wealth is concentrated in Jakarta. If Indonesia evenly spread out its economic wealth to other parts of the country, then Jakarta would no longer be overcrowded.

I am surprised by fact that many of the interviewees (who seems to be young and well educated) don’t even get their facts right. It really shows how ignorant we are about this issue. The sea level rises around Jakarta Bay Area is not 1cm per year.. it’s 25cm or approximately 10 inches per year. The issue of relocation of The Capital has been raised up since the era of President Soekarno in 1957, not since SBY era. Other countries did their extreme in preventing global climate change. Many had switch to zero waste living. So many environmental activists (mostly expatriates) do beach cleaning in Bali and around our country but we as citizens couldn’t even do the simplest thing: throw our garbage in the garbage bin. Let’s not only talk about long terms solutions. Let’s talk about the present. I mean.. with previous Governor (Ahok) we enjoyed several years of flood-free city.. Can we at least simply copy paste and maintain that level of cleanliness. Stop talking only on macro level. Those are the duties of our government. The only thing you can do, is choose the people that are concerned about environmental issues. But what about the little thing? Less plastic usage, learn to recycle, again... throw your garbage in it’s proper place. Educate yourself. Please. It is impacting our lives in much sooner and greater than you think it is.

Neither do your facts about sea level rise is true. It is not true that sea level rise happening at Jakarta is 25 cm per year ( educate yourself about scientific fact from science journal and not from news portal). You have to distinguish between sea level rise and land subsidence. Sea level rise may vary each location from 0.5 - 4 cm per year. The other factor why jakarta is sinking, because significant rate of land subsidence 1 - 15 cm per year. NOTE THAT it happen in certain area, and each area get different rate of subsidence. Correct me if i am wrong.

A similar situation is happening to Male, the capital of the Maldives. However they can't move the capital because just like Indonesia, the Maldives is an archipelago. The islands within the Maldives, however, are very small (unlike Indonesia) and aren't suitable to house a capital. The island the city is on is the only suitable one. So they build barriers to stop the rising sea levels from flooding the entire city. Soon those barriers will be infiltrated as the sea level increases. It's a complex situation for both capitals

To be honest, I agree with developing other parts of Indonesia. But, then again, if you create a new city out of nowhere and change the designation of your capital city to that new city, will people move, stay, and work there? Just look at Naypyidaw, Myanmar and Brasilia, Brazil (which only develop further years after the project is complete).
Who is supposed to move to the new city? Government officials? Executives? Or ordinary people? Will they be willing to settle in a newly developed area where the quality of education and health services are unknown? Are there any incentives for people moving to the new city?
Also, don't forget that moving the capital to another place doesn't stop the sinking and flooding from happening in Jakarta.

  • @yaqwas1

    (1) You can relate the sinking phenomena of Jakarta to the scientific term "relative sea level rise". On the one side the sea level is rising due to climate change, and on the other side the land surface sinks due to the heavy load of hardly regulated construction projects across the last decades and the depletion of ground water. There are a couple of scientific studies made the last years that show that there are even parts in Jakarta that sink up to 10cm/year.
    (2) If I'm not wrong, the plan by moving the capital was primary to relocate the government institutions. As examples of Germany or Brazil show, relocating a capital doesn't mean to relocate a whole economic/financial district. It takes many years. But the relocation could be at least an intervention to stop the nearly endless growth of the city.

My first thought (as a Mindanaoan) on moving the capital to Borneo is that it would actually trigger international sea trade in Mindanao, which is a big mystery to me considering that they could have built ports directly facing Malaysia and Indonesia long ago. It would benefit trade of agricultural products between countries and allow development for both Borneo and Mindanao -- or directly even Malaysia's two states in Borneo. HOWEVER if the reason was climate change and it might result to further deforestation, that's just defeating the purpose.
However, it is beneficial if at least the central government itself relocates somewhere with less population density and no heavy traffic. It's only the capital that will change and it's not like Jakarta will be abandoned by its residents. Although yes, there will be residents who will have to relocate due to work.
Saying no to the move is just like postponing it until the time the problem is already worse. But hey, it costs too much and we consider one interviewee's words, it should be done slowly.
Oh one more thing: They should also try to learn from Malaysia's moving its federal government.

For the indonesian interviewer : Finally, you pick the right indonesian citizen to ask, and all of them can give a great answer.
Karena yang sebelum2nya, yang ditanyain kurang tepat, jawabannya pun seadanya karena kurang pemahaman, dan gak terlalu bisa kasi pandangan yang mewakili jawaban orang indonesia pada umumnya. (menurut gue)
But, for this one, good job. Keep it up.

The main problem actually is the underground water reserve usage. The residential, mall, office, all use this unrenewable resource. If only the water filtration companies got more efficient and government put a high taxation over ground water usage, it will help to reduce the problem getting worse significantly.

I think Korea did a similar act - moving a large part of central government and its workers to Sejong from Seoul in order to lessen overcrowded beast of S. Korea ‘s capital.
It’s insane how much construction is going on in Sejong, and yet the city is mostly empty of residents. What a fascinating project.

And maybe aside from Palangkaraya Indonesia can consider selat malaka as the capital city. In Majapahit era and before that, selat malaka has been famous for being the center for traders to trade and the area is very strategic too

I was surprised no one gave as a good reason to move the Capital the fact that Jakarta (under the name Batavia) was also the capital when Indonesia was a Dutch colony. Indonesians really don't seem to hold much of a grudge against the Dutch (I'm Dutch), or do they?
[edit] Funnily enough The Netherlands, tiny and low lying as it is, is also at serious risk when sea levels rise, our capital Amsterdam is as threatened as Jakarta, if not more.

I'm Indonesian, and to answer your question I think it's because we were colonized by Dutch for so long that we developed some kind of mental issue which we always glorify things that Caucasians do and to see them as superior instead of hating what Dutch did in the past 😂 I know, it's weird.. to test this theory you can try to take stroll on Indonesia's streets as a Dutch, everybody will be kind enough to greet you and you'll be followed by kids like some kind of their idol even though you said that you're Dutch 😂

If the city is truly sinking why not find a solution? Learn from the Dutch and how they were able to reclaim their land. The country can continue to build giant luxurious skyscrapers but yet they are not doing much to save the city. There's no reason to move the capital elsewhere. The business and financial district is here and it should be as close to the capital as it can be. Reclaiming land is one thing but they should also find solutions on how to get water to residences and businesses of the city. Didn't Tokyo and Taipei have the same problem back in the day? The government of Indonesia needs to understand and study these issues really well rather than just run from the problem. Indonesia is such a great country and has grown a lot over the last few years. So why not continue to grow and fix the things that need to be fixed; infrastructure, political, social, and many more. As a proud Inondeian myself, I really do love this country and I really wish the best for it and its people.

Moving capital citry from Jakarta wont affect Jakarta economy much because those business companies won't just relocate. You can see in other countries that moved their capital city, their main business city remain the same (Sydney & Canberra) (Shanghai & Beijing) (New York & Washington) - Sydneysider

No..
