Depression is common after stroke, affecting up to one third of stroke survivors at any one time. The natural history of PSD is dynamic; however, symptoms most frequently develop in the first year. The most consistent predictors of PSD include physical disability, stroke severity, depression before stroke, and cognitive impairment. Clinical trials of antidepressants in individuals with PSD have shown a beneficial effect on depression remission and response, Several recent trials have indicated a benefit of brief psychosocial therapies for treatment. If she qualifies for maintenance physical therapy that would be of benefit as well.

To feel better reduce negative thoughts and overthinking. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Hydroxyzine may be used for short-term or immediate control of anxiety symptoms until maintenance therapy is effective. Here is a study looking at Hydroxyzine and generalised anxiety disorder: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21154375/. Using Lexapro and Hydroxyzine together may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Older adults may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination.Your Doctor knows you better as he or she is privy to your medication & medical history.I assume that they are using it for a short term basis until you symptoms are better controlled with the appropriate dose of Lexapro.

But I think it actually made my adhd much worse, plus I had all the brain side effects you mentioned (mood swings, suicidal thoughts, insomnia, etc plus dry mouth). I only took it for 2months, I stopped when I realized it was making everything worse. I experienced some withdrawal symptoms from tapering too fast. Here you can read the comment from UpToDate a peer reviewed resource for clinical information: "As a class, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been evaluated extensively in pregnant patients. Studies focusing on newborn outcomes following first trimester exposure often have inconsistent results due to differences in study design and confounders such as maternal disease and social factors (Anderson 2020; Biffi 2020; Fitton 2020; Reefhuis 2015; Womersley 2017). Adverse effects in the newborn following SSRI exposure late in the third trimester can include apnea, constant crying, cyanosis, feeding difficulty, hyperreflexia, hypo- or hypertonia, hypoglycemia, irritability, jitteriness, respiratory distress, seizures, temperature instability, tremor, and vomiting. Prolonged hospitalization, respiratory support, or tube feedings may be required. Symptoms may be due to the toxicity of the SSRIs or a discontinuation syndrome and may be consistent with serotonin syndrome associated with SSRI treatment. Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn has been reported with SSRI exposure; although the absolute risk is small, monitoring of infants exposed to SSRIs late in pregnancy is recommended (Masarwa 2019; Ng 2019). The long-term effects of in utero SSRI exposure on infant neurodevelopment and behavior are not known (CANMAT [MacQueen 2016])."

@@secretperson9289 I can only go with the information I have. To make that diagnosis I would need an extensive history, coupled with your medical history and a physical examination. However, what did stand out in your comments was when you described mania and racing thoughts. If you were diagnosed with unipolar depression that is a rather paradoxical reaction. Therefore, my advice is to reach out to your Doctor who knows you better and describe your symptoms. He or she can see these symptoms in that context, a new medication coupled with your described symptoms.

I was on Lexapro for 6 months. Honestly, I don't think it really helped me much except for maybe helping me to focus more. I don't really think it helped my anxiety, which was mostly why I was on it. Here are the side effects it caused. For the first week, my sleep was VERY restless (would sleep a few hours at a time, but couldn't stay asleep for the night), but that only lasted about a week or two. Only had one nightmare while I was on it. I did experience the tingling sensation in my arms and legs when I was on it, but only from time to time. No noticeable weight gain/loss and no change in sex drive. I guess it helps some people, but I don't think it really did much for me.

i haven't been on lexapro a full week yet but i have been taking 5 mg a day for 4-5 days now and i thought i would have to go up to 10mg when doc told me to start at 5 but i was wrong.. 5 is strong AF!! Day 1 I felt like i took a melatonin. soo sleepy flu-like and when i stood i was wobbly like with melatonin. It takes my anxiety AWAY for the most part. I was used to functioning in a nervous state of fight or flight almost everytime I was without my boyfriend in public. I can go to the store and to work and feel comfortable and not on edge. One customer at my work noticed but I played it off bc I'm new at my waitressing job. He came in on my first ever shift and when I was not on lexapro yet and I was nervous bc it was my first day and also bc of my general anxiety ridden state. On lexapro a few days later he came back and was like "before you were so nervous it was your first day and look at you now! you're gonna do great" etc. i would of still been nervous w/o lexapro.. I however do have side effects, I get the dry mouth bad and I feel sleepy taking lexapro and feel a bit wobbly sometimes like I took a melatonin and stood up after sleeping but not too bad. Gonna talk to my doc if its normal. The benefits for ME so far seem to be worth it. Dont take my comment to heart and commit to an SSRI bc of my experience not even a week in though!! Research serotonin syndrome where too much serotonin is very dangerous. Not everything is for everyone based on my results as everyone has diff brain chemistry!! Consult w/ your doctor. =)

I started Lexapro 20mg in December 2019 for 3 months and stopped cold turkey due to losing my job and insurance. Over the past several months, I’ve been having chest/heart pains. I recall one time I felt light headed and dizzy like I was going to pass out along with the chest pains while working out, my heart felt tired like it wanted to stop. I’ve never felt these things before taking Lexapro. Is this normal after stopping it? Will it go away? Could it be caused by from jumping straight to 20mg? Could that cause permanent heart damage? I don’t have insurance anymore so I can’t go back to my original doctors. I plan on seeing a new doctor soon, but any medical opinions/input will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's difficult to give you specific advice as I am not your Doctor nor am I privy to your entire medical history & medications. What I can say generally is that when we hear our patients talk about chest pain we always want to rule out an organic causes for chest pain. You want to make sure that the chest pains you are describing are not related to a pathology in your heart or lungs.(Thyroid disorders can also cause similar symptoms.)To your specific question if Lexapro can cause chest pain, palpitations: This has been described while on the drug in less than 1% of cases ( source uptodate.com) "Cardiovascular: Chest pain, hypertension, palpitations."The general recommended starting dose is 10mg. Before concluding that the symptoms you described above are related to the events described in your life as well as the generalised anxiety subsequent to that, I would recommend that these organic causes be first ruled out.

Astrid, If taking ADS stick to the lowest mg which do not have major side effects. How are you now? In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. Observe your breath sensations when taking a walk, before sleep, in college, at work, when reading, etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Unfortunately, a lot of drugs used to treat mental illness have a long string of side effects and many have a black box warning. These decisions will then have to be made together with your respective health care providers.

I have anxiety &panic disorder and going through depression. I just started this on 10mg pill (its the small round one)
    About 1 week now.
The first day I took it I had racing mind/thoughts. My mind was very awake I Couldn’t sleep that night.
The next day I had regular mind, if anything- it was actually quieter than usual. Haven’t had extremely negative thoughts as before.
I still get anxious or have moment where I start get emotional and sad. But I have easier time getting myself to listen to the positive thoughts instead.
One thing I noticed is that lately food has been tasting differently or grosser than usual.
    Certain foods at least.
I had some cookies and cream icecream and it had the slight taste of cotton candy.
I had a bowl of cereal with milk, and the Milk tasted grosser than I usually find it to be (I generally don’t like milk much but this time tasted worse, and no it wasnt expired.)
I think I also noticed I can smell more with my nose. Scents are stronger to me now. I noticed my own scent and it can be a little strong so I have been taking more showers cause of it.

Juan Isa, Try to stick to the lowest mg. How are you now? In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. Observe your breath sensations when taking a walk, before sleep, in college, at work, when reading, etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media, take morning sunlight walks and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

I tried lexapro a few times. I had wild side effects not listed or talked about by anyone. Even my doctor does not understand my side effects. My side effects were an extreme increase of sex drive. I felt Amazing, happy carefree for the first 6-8 hours after day one of my first dose (after doctor said it would take weeks to start working). After the first 6-8 hours of taking my first dose and had a horrible crash. Feelings of extreme fear, dread and as if I kept getting ‘stuck’ in the moment unable to move or focus away from just staring off in to the distance. Episodes of tunnel vision and panic which lasted a few minutes at a time. I was on 10mg 5mg and even split the 5mg in half to 2.5mg. All of which produced the same great feeling when I first took it followed by the horrible crash I described above. Has anyone else experienced this? It’s an amazing drug for the first several hours and then it all goes down hill. Maybe it would help to take more when I feel the crash, but I don’t want to be constantly in fear of a crash and chasing it with more pills.
