Folk is a pretty broad genre, I'm not necessarily surprised. To be folk music it has to have a historical tone which depends on the the region the music is from. Chinese folk music typically has loud gongs noises and bellowing flutes, where as the Pakistan or Kazakhstan folk is generally very fast and include a lot of percussion parts.
I like listening to songs like this..mainly because I find that most of them have a secret message(usually)...and I find it interesting ....but I also just simply like the songs..and I love the nightcore version.. :)
