When a dealer advertises one price and then says it is sold or not available when you get there and tries to get you to buy a different, more expensive vehicle, it is called "bait and Switch," and is illegal in most states.
Except in the case where that vehicle actually has been sold. I have had countless times when a person calls and says they are interested in a vehicle, and want to buy it, or at least come look at it. So I go get the keys and actually put my hands on the car, call them with my cell and even take a pic and send it to them to verify. Then I remind that person that there are ten (or more) other salesmen working at this dealership, and if they want to guarantee the car is there when they arrive, that they need to put a refundable deposit to hold the car. Of course most will say no, and take that chance. There are a lot of people that will say they are on their way to the dealership, or make an appointment, and show up a day later. As a salesman, if we are holding the keys, and another salesman asks us for the keys to show someone else, unless we are actually working a deal with the client in the showroom, or a deposit, then we have to give up the keys. And guess what, we sell cars on a regular basis, sometimes several every hour. There are also times when a car is dealer traded, and salesmen don't have any control over that situation either. So no, that is not bait and switch, nor a false claim. Bait and switch is when you tell the guy that the car is there, and you know you don't have it, or placed the ad without ever having one, but you try to get them to buy a different one when they get to the store. Definition: the action (generally illegal) of advertising goods which are an apparent bargain, with the intention of substituting inferior or more expensive goods.
Haha, they did that me, saw a brand new ram 2500 Cummins for 42k when all the other ones where 55k and up. Went there, said the truck must have been sold cause it wasn’t in the lot, showed me expensive ones. Luckily I change salesperson and the guy found the truck in the back hidden away. End up taking the truck for the advertised price since I got the vin and photos of the website.
@@AwkwardYet , Because they combine ALL of the rebates and incentives that are available to get to that price. They used to do this in print ads a lot. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't like this method, but it works to get people in the door. Then when people get to the dealership I have to sit down with them and ask if they are a Veteran/First Responder, have a GM vehicle(or conquest vehicle), have bought from the dealership in the last year, etc. the list goes on. Then when they would say yes or no, I could add or subtract the rebates that they do qualify for. Some would get upset, some of those guys would leave, but the ones that stayed would understand and continue with the buying process. You have to read the fine print. If they did not disclose those rebates in the ad (online/print) then there is a gray area about false advertising and bait and switch. I say gray area, because there have been court cases where the dealership/advertising client told the advertising outlet to put those words in the ad, but the advertising outlet did not for one reason or another. In the past, there were a lot of false advertisements and bait and switch ad campaigns going on. But for the most part, with all of the scrutiny going on, especially for dealerships, the marketing department is keen on the laws and holds to those rules quite tightly, not only for fear of getting fired, but also for fear of being caught up in a court case, which could ruin your marketing career. Think of it like a skateboarder riding the rail with the tip of his board. It is a fine line, and if done wrong, it can end badly, but if done correctly, it is a spectacle of amazement. It is also just like an ad with large numbers showing a great price. But what you typically don't catch with your eye the first time you see the ad is the phrase, "as low as" in fine print somewhere on the ad. Then you have to find out what that means.
@@Flydevice1, Yeah, there are a lot of lazy salesmen out there. The thing is, (IF) a salesman is paid on commission, it is based on margin, so the price of the truck really doesn't matter to his paycheck. What matters is how close to the MSRP he sells it to you for, and how much he pays for the trade in. When it comes to like for like vehicles, the mark up is typically close. But listening to the client and getting them what they are asking for in a timely manner is what builds trust and leads closer to a sale.
The truck was hidden in the back and took so long to find because someone at the dealership was using it as a personal truck and had to clean it and prep it again
John Henry Lol not always necessarily the case. I’ve bribed salesman to hold and hide trucks in the back for me in the past. I know I’m not the only one who’s done this either. They might’ve already had someone wanting that truck before these guys bought it. Not only that but salesman like to hide certain vehicles in the back for certain personal reasons as well especially if add Ons have been added to the truck. (Lifts, wheels & tires, brush guards etc..) trust me I know when I’m Telling you. I just bought a brand new Ram and my cousins just bought this exact same gmc at4 2500 these guys bought, 2 months ago for our businesses
This is the most accurate video of buying a new vehicle I’ve ever seen. It’s always a complete pain the in the ass and involves multiple dealerships to get the “deal” you want. And I use “deal” loosely, because at the end of the day you’re still getting screwed.
dealerships are a form of organized crime......All of us should be able to configure and purchase our products from the manufacturer. It is why Tesla meets such resistance in certain states because of the dealership lobby trying to keep that model of business out of the state. When you are dropping 30k+ on a vehicle you should not be dealing with compromises in spec, color etc.
ex-pro tips: [long post, buckle in] If you finance, you're getting screwed. Pay cash, always. Hunt for incentives and MFG rebates. If you're using blue book, you're getting screwed. You want NADA/"black book"; You want bankers' values not resellers (dealer's) values. You want invoice/cost price, not sticker/MSRP. You want ALL dealer-added extras taken off or free. Otherwise abandon the car. Have the car re-certified on your own if you MUST have it certified. You want to make them LOSE on the deal, and barring that, they should barely break even. Anything else and you're getting screwed. The dealer, even if they're nice people, are NEVER on your side unless you've got a disgruntled employee who's literally going to quit after you sign. DON'T add extras with the paperwork guy. NONE of them. Period. Try to get something for free... not deferred cost, FREE free. Make them LOSE on the deal. NEVER visit only 1 dealership. ALWAYS visit at least 2/3. Each individual dealer visit will be several hours long, possibly the entire day. Plan ahead, take the whole day off. you MIGHT get lucky and be there for only 3(ish). Probably not. Print out comparable vehicles within a 200mi radius of any given dealer for any given car. Compare 3Ms; same Make, Model, and Mileage. Get these ready before your first visit. Go RIGHT to the vehicle. Do not let them up-sell/side-sell you on another vehicle. GRILL them on why their price is isn't lower (even if they're the lowest; make some shit up... because they will too). Get them to go lower than competitor/similar vehicles on other lost, have them write it on your sheets, get their sales manager to sign on the "pre-committment". Then "go home to think about it" (home is immediately to the next dealership, bring those papers with you) Repeat until you run out of dealerships. WAIT AT LEAST 2 DAYS, Whatever car you REALLY want, go that dealer, bring the sheet with the lowest cost on a competing vehicle. If the car IS the lowest of them all, Demand a lower price anywyas. If they say no, WALK. Then wait 2-3 days for the email saying there's a price drop at/below your asking price. If it's not at/below, or you don't get the email within FIVE days.... go to the second-best dealer. Tell them you want the EXACT car from you REALLY want, and ONLY that one, and and you will buy it from them SPECIFICALLY if they can manage to buy it from the other dealer. Tell them you will commit to signing if they can pull it off (they can... it's a hassle, but they can, if they say they can't they're lying).... make sure you get them to lock in a price lower than your "real" ask... they will likely try to shaft you with dealer-to-dealer delivery and "processing" costs. Might be good to "tentatively" lock in a price and re-evaluate on arrival to check for any damage during transit. (Make some shit up, especially if it was driven instead of trucked over). MAKE. THEM. LOSE. Also, Don't buy anything that hasn't been on the lot for at least 30 days, preferably 60+. Track cars to see if they've been at other dealerships before (usually in the carfax). Get CARFAX and check the VIN for recalls. Every "ding" on the report is a discount you need to ask for. If the car was in a snow state, knock off discount for salt damage/corrosion. If they won't give you the discounts. WALK. (And actually walk). If you're already at/below your ask, don't ask for more discounts, take the bird in the hand. If you can afford to travel, buy "losers" out-of-market. Buy sports cars in the dead of winter in the snow belt, buy A HUMMER in the middle of downtown in the spring. Buy the car you want where nobody is buying them FROM. Your starting negotiations will be much lower. All this assumes you've done research on the car you want, reliability, repair records, etc. Buy "winners" in-market. Buy SUVs from dealers close to suburbs. Buy trucks between farmland and city. Depends on the car, down to make/model in most instances. Lots of price research from across the country and across at least a year per vehicle class and type will be needed. If you MUST finance, you can't afford the car... but you might be worse off WITHOUT a car... so in that case DON'T put anything down. Down payments don't come off the top, it gets added at the bottom. Again for the ones in the back. DOWN PAYMETS ARE ADDITIONAL COST INCREASE, NOT A DISCOUNT FROM STICKER. If you MUST put a down payment, immediately file a UCC-1 financing statement (look up how to do that). Your down payment constitutes a valid (partial, but "perfected") legal claim against the vehicle and if un-challenged, overrides other unperfected claims. -former used car salesman
This is one of the dumbest comments I've ever seen. You can literally go to websites like Truecar.com and see what a fair price is right from home, and even email multiple dealerships with your offer essentially making the deal without leaving your house. When I recently purchased my car my only trip to the dealership was to pick up my new vehicle which was already cleaned and gassed up with plates on it ready to go. I signed a few pieces of paper and I was on my way. The problem is that people like you are stuck in the "old school" way of buying a car, and assume everyone is "ripping you off" and you have to drive all over the state chiseling away at reasonable offers to save yourself $100 extra dollars. That's what salesman hate dealing with. Also, for the comment above, cash vs finance does not save a single penny aside from the interest fees you will be paying. Often times new car manufacturers even run 0% interest rates, so there is no interest at all. A dealership does not care if you're paying with a bag of cash, a bank check, or signing up for financing, in the end they get their money and you get a car.
King Jerbear Agree with most of what you said but it does make a difference if you tell them you’re going to finance because if they think they can get their money back by screwing you with the interest rate they’re more likely to meet your price, That’s why many dealer want to know your Social Security number in the beginning so they can check your credit score to know what is the best interest rate there is for you and they will add one or two point on that. So the best strategy for the buyer is to pretend you’re going to finance it but at the end just pay cash or take the hiked up interest rate but pay it off immediately after one or two payments
@@avanti2k They check your credit score so they can quote accurate payments, and make sure you can actually afford the car you're looking for. Whether they think they can "screw you" on the backend doesn't matter, because you can easily secure your own financing if your credit is up to snuff
buyer: "How much for the truck?" salesman: "It's certified." buyer: "How much is it?" salesman: "It's certified, you know." buyer: What does it cost?" salesman: "It also has the remainder of the warranty, so there's that. And it's certified."
I went to a dealership to look at a 2018 Camaro and salesman did the same fucking thing to me man. I swear its the most annoying shit you go through when they try to offer you something you don't want. But you just want to know the sole price of the car you are buying, and they come at you with some other shit. I was so fucking close to fighting the salesman that day and that part of the video reminded me of that LMFAO

I order all of my new vehicles. Pretty simple. I call, tell them what I want, place a deposit, they call me when it get there, digital sign, drive off.
Dealerships do this to each and every customer that comes in wanting a "deal" for a reason. They want the consumer so damned frustrated that they will agree to just about anything just to get it over with. It's happened every time I have gone to purchase a new Vehicle.
Rich Rigney not really, this usually only happens to cocky prospects that think their purchase is going to make the entire dealership staff rich. Its as easy as going in and letting them know what your honest intentions are so that nobody’s time gets wasted. Its all about perception at the first impression.
I literally hate dealerships with a burning passion. I’ve had all really annoying experiences and 1 pleasant experience in my lifetime. I. Hate. Dealerships.

That’s awesome man. I just did the same thing for a tax write off with a new 2500HD High Country, I was also set on blue and drove all around Texas to find one. Dealerships were saying they had it and didn’t. Until I finally found it and it was different in person. What a headache! Congratulations on the new truck man!
I can say right now about that people saying brand new vehicles don't need paint correction bit...for those that will say that...they're so wrong haha. I work at a dealership and we have had to do that to cars fresh off the truck, barely even stripped off the plastic they put on them or fused them yet and we're already doing some paint correction.
@paul williamsHonda's are what I work with and they are fairly bad for this...let alone the people that buy them. Black is by far the worst color to get your car in because anything in existence scratches it lol

The headache of buying any car, even when ready to buy... clear as day here. Thanks for exposing it all, and down to the details of needing the business card. WOW. Definitely do a review of your impressions of the truck.
The "if you can't give us this price, we gotta go" works everytime, went to a dealership asking 36k, I said 33,000 bank drafted right now or we're going to the dealership next door, he said thats impossible so we left, 2 days later the sales person called me saying he could make 33,000 work. The tip here is to shop at the end of the month cycle because these guys have a quota that they have to make to receive incentives from the manufacturer, if they are a couple cars away from that quota, they'd rather lose a few grand in a car than not receive tens of thousands of dollars from the car company. Also if you're financing, please don't tell them your budget, they will max the shit out of that budget of yours.

Same shit happened to be last summer at Greico Ford in Ft. Lauderdale. Looking at the price, I thought this has to be an error. So I called the dealership and they confirmed the price. Go to Rocky Ridge website and the "Mad Rock" model is discontinued. So I figure 41k is possible. Get to the dealership today at 2pm. Meet with Sales Associate and he pulls up the stock number on truck and confirms price. I play the sales game and wait for almost an hour to have them pull the truck out. That shortened my patience. Then I test drive the truck For 85k MSRP and it's an XLT. Nothing over the top about it. Get back to the dealership sit at the cubicle forever waiting for the numbers on my trade in and my keys to the truck. The sales associate comes over and tells me there was an error and the truck is actually going for 65K. I walk over to the manager to get my keys and the manager asked "what's up?" I told him I was very annoyed I just wasted 3 hours of my life after being told multiple times the price listed was correct. He responses "Yeah Right! That's an 85k dollar truck. We would never sell it for that. I said "Well it's a year old left over XLT model with a lift kit and a horrendous front bumper so I can definitely see that price being possible. Oh additionally Rocky ridge website States that model has a BDS lift kit with fox coilovers and fox rear 2.0. instead it looked like a basic $900 rough country lift. No sign of coil overs. Needless to say I will never visit that dealership again.

Some tips and thoughts from someone who works in the industry (and specifically sells GM): Unfortunately most dealerships will tell you they have a vehicle that's listed (usually called an ad"leader") for listed price JUST to get you in the door and switch you. It's a bad tactic and being upfront is always the best policy. In some states (not mine) they can list new vehicles with ALL the discounts and rebates applicable. So funky stuff like farmers owners rebate or other shit like that they can advertise but once they get you interested and present numbers they start taking away discounts saying you don't qualify. Telling them you are willing to pay cash isn't helping you. Dealerships make more money off of finance. Also in some states, it's illegal to change the price based on method of payment. That business card bullshit was something else lmao. That didn't seem right. Nice truck by the way and congrats!
Dealers hate that shit lol. The bank actually charges them back the amount they pay the dealership if it isn't financed for more then like 3 months. Its actually funny. The business card thing is actually kind of legit. When a business buys a vehicle they most provide proof of business ownership to turn into GM for rebates and state licensing and shit. The fact they would only accept a card is shady af. Other things would have worked for sure. That guy was just being a lazy fuck.
I don't know why you had such a hard time buying a truck, I just purchased a 2019 F250 Lariat (FX4, 6.7 Powerstroke, 360 view cam) and I got it for right around $59k after everything and that was including the extended warranty which is like $3-4k. I know you already had you mind made up on the duramax but honestly the brand new powerstrokes are really nice on the inside and they look really good with some wheels and tires on them too. But I'm 18 years old and I sold my first truck and saved up cash to put about half down and was able to get approved to get the remaining financed through Ford, all on my own and not to plug anyone but I went to Town East Ford in North TX and they treated me just like any other customer and had the truck I found online sitting out front waiting for me when I got there and gave me the internet price they had on their website. My truck even came with window tint and bed liner from the dealership included with the price of the truck, 10/10 I'd buy it again 100x over.

Went there, said the truck must have been sold cause it wasn’t in the lot, showed me expensive ones. Luckily I change salesperson and the guy found the truck in the back hidden away. End up taking the truck for the advertised price since I got the vin and photos of the website.
@@jmackinjersey1 How is it not bait and switch or a false claim? They said it was 70K online and when he got there they said its 78K.
@@southtexasking5821either of these are plausible.
When you are dropping 30k+ on a vehicle you should not be dealing with compromises in spec, color etc.
ex-pro tips: [long post, buckle in]
If you finance, you're getting screwed.

Dealerships do this to each and every customer that comes in wanting a "deal" for a reason. They want the consumer so damned frustrated that they will agree to just about anything just to get it over with. It's happened every time I have gone to purchase a new Vehicle.

I think you should name the new truck Delilah! Also, amazing content, love the videos. I have grown to love your content recently after watching a bunch of old videos and I'm a huge fan now. Keep the music coming as well! Happy Holidays Gavin!

This video outlines why I'm so glad I bought a Tesla. Step 1) Go online, pick the colors & options. Step 2) Click order and provide payment. Step 3) Pick up or have it delivered. No haggling, no unnecessary BS from dealerships, just a clean transaction how things should be.
Step 4 order the rest of life online lol
“Imma keep it stock” I can feel it coming.
I knew it I knew it I knew it I can see right thru people and I'm never wrong. I found him n wasn't disappointed. Mello goes hard AF!
Every dime you spend should be put toward your business, every penny. Gas, food, tools, rent everything. I do this with my business. I have a certain amount that I have to spend every year to not pay the IRS more than I like.
H&P Customs what is your business about
70k for a truck and you’re making a business card in the dealership to confirm ownership lmao!
Diesels don’t deprecate as much as gas, everything is built to last longer and be a lot stronger Alison will run for 300k mikes easy
Gipster99 glad to hear theirs gonna be 300k mikes in her 🤣

Joseph Roy oh yeeeeeaaaahhhhh

I’m 42 years old and was trying to replace my big rig and I got treated the same as y’all. I went through 7 dealerships and finally had one ordered to be built. Never had such a hard time trying to spend $178k. I feel your pain!
Dealerships make the most money through finance that’s why it’s so complicated with cash
I'd easily drop 1000 dollars on merch to win allison bruh. At 20 an entry. Say less.
Bait and switch. You got hit with the oldest scam In the book. He lured you in with a truck he didn’t have then sold you one you didn’t want
That's why GM is still in business, well that and Obama bailing them out..
@@derriklee287 yeah fucked up for a dealership to do this. Its mostly used car dealers that do this. They advertise a nice clean car for cheap and then you go they don't have it and they try to show you the other cars
Its gotten so many lol, i woukd of gotten done the same way but i knew what motor and package i want. But i did get lured in on a color i didnt want
Some tips and thoughts from someone who works in the industry (and specifically sells GM):
Unfortunately most dealerships will tell you they have a vehicle that's listed (usually called an ad"leader") for listed price JUST to get you in the door and switch you.
Hopefully Allison won’t be replaced
Thats a lotta truck for an 18 year old and i'm 19 LOL. I put a 3/4 downpayment on a 2011 f150 when I was 17 which costed 16k. Got mine used at huffines in denton.
The 6.7s are easy to find because they are junk when they wear out, if you made a triton into a diesel that would be the 6.7.
@@braydenbledsoe3252 It is ridiculous but I needed a 3/4 ton diesel for work because I'm towing 8-10k lbs almost daily, I would've loved to pay the price of a used one but I just sold my 2006 Ram 2500 5.9 to get my new truck and that truck had to have so many repairs in the past 2-3 years that it just didn't make sense to own it anymore so I got rid of it while it was still worth a good chunk of money. And there is no way in hell I could afford this truck if I didn't work in landscaping, it's good money but it wears your body out real fast.
@@benson4u215 I disagree and I only say that because of all the 6.7s (2014-2019) that are work trucks in the company I work for, have had no issues besides the emissions stuff making it go into limp mode frequently but that's once you get to around 100k miles. And after those trucks that were going into limp mode got a "muffler delete" then they've been problem free ever since. But I guess only time will tell.
Not gonna lie I thought the title meant "independent rear suspension" lmao
Same here I was bout to say wtf did GM do lol

Buy a house, build a shop.... that’s a tax right off
Rent is deductible better than a built location. Property involves so much more bs than simply renting
its called a bait and switch to get u in the dealership to get something else
i thought about starting a used car dealership so i looked into sales tactics. its something everyone should do before buying a car
Yup found a nice jeep online went to the dealership and.... oh we sold that one yesterday.... but we have this totally diffrent one here you will like .... nope see ya later i left. Dirty tricks i dont like that. Def slimy
Dealerships actually do not like a sale with straight cash. No incentives. You guys rock love ya guys
Buying a vehicle is fun they said....
They say anything to get you in the door lol
It will be great they said
It's can't take anything away from you! Not unless you owe money on backtaxes. However he must have made quite a bit of money thru the entire year and Is in a higher tax bracket and has to pay 2-3 times as much in taxes so the trick is spend the money needed to bring you into the llwer tax bracket. To include money to charity, donating clothes and stuff to charity, also you can rightoff what ever you buy for your business ( tax deductible)
I never realized buying a brand new truck was such a pain in the ass.
I just bought a brand new F-250 and I was expecting it to be a nightmare but it was a complete breeze. The ford dealer in my area is awesome though and the sailsman I dealt with was a friend of mine so that probably helped.
It's even shittier when you try and pay it with cash. They're less willing to budge on the price because they don't get the incentives they normally get by making you finance the truck.
@@thoryan946 I can understand that. I didnt pay fully cash but my down payment was 76% of the total cost so it made it way easier to get the financing. Maybe it would have been worse if I just payed with cash in full.
Bring them a check and it's not a pain.
@@colinmackay92 7.3? or 6.7?
Coming from a guy who has worked in sales for both GMC and Chevrolet... This video was both hilarious how the salesmen acted and tried to get you to look more and make you feel better about spending the money, and also pissed me off the way they treated you! Haha but yea love the truck man!!
The antique car Gavin is talking about is a black 1960 camero
(Edit: it’s a camero not charger my bad)
inclyto saw it on his snap
No its a camaro not charger
1968 Camaro
It's a Camaro.
Wait, if you confirmed that you were on the way to pick up the truck and they happen to sell it between the time you confirmed the purchase and picking it up (with or without payment) it could be considered a bait and switch. Which is ground for legal action, or could be used a bargaining chip to get some money off. As long as it's a reasonable amount of time.
Skdizzle Gavin would have had to have paid for the Truck, no? Cause then the devil dealerships would just say that there was no guarantee he was going to buy it
@@3dzilla8 Not exactly.I bought a truck from a dealership earlier this year and they held it for me before I gave them the money. They told me they had a few people try to buy it out from under me but they declined to do that since they stated to me it is not how they do business. It all depends on the people.
@@jo.t8812 I've had this happen to family before, and I do agree that taking legal action would just be stupid, but threatening to take legal action will often make dealerships drop the price on a comparable vehicle.
Tyler Hubbell you certainly worked with a good dealership, one that actually sticks to their word. Sadly most dealers aren’t like this
