I'm a nurse in the US (Georgia specifically) & I reallllly enjoy watching all your videos. Working in trauma/emergency nursing I don't get to hear about long term things people go through or this in depth of pt experience. I love your content outside of this stuff too. So sorry to hear this though & sending happy healthy thoughts your way!

It's been just over three weeks since I went in to have a colonoscopy for my ulcerative colitis. During that procedure my bowel was perforated and I ended up with an emergency ileostomy that afternoon (the bowel was in horrible shape).
I told sooooo many people (doctors, nurses, friends, family; anyone who came in to my room really) that the reason I was dealing with the whole thing so well was because you shared your experience with the world.
You sharing your experience on TH-cam and me being able to watch that content back at the beginning of the year before all this happened for myself allowed me to come to terms with accepting my stoma a lot better and treating this journey with a positive outlook!
Thank you so so much I honestly have know idea how I would have coped with the last few weeks without the amazing work you've done!

Hannah Witton. Thank you for your honesty and thoroughness in dealing with and reporting what has happened to you. I agree with everything Myron Speed has said. Your positive attitude is the only way to deal with the nasty bits of life. Decades ago My mother had to have a stoma and in those days everyone shied away from even mentioning it. Sad and a lost opportunity to bond. I'll still be afraid if it happens to me but your videos have shown me the way through any adversity . Thank you again 😂✔👍❤

I know your pain. My kidney was destroyed when a stone blocked the ureter and the back pressure tears the kidney tissue apart. Its “kill me now” pain. The passage of time makes the memory of that pain fade. Good to see you survived with a smile. Sorry you have had to go thru all this...

It sounds like an awful month for you! I'm so glad you're getting better even with the set backs. I also have a chronic illness and it's so validating to hear you talk about your frustration and discouragement. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but since it's out of my control, it sure is nice to know I'm not alone in the sometimes-discouraged club. I wish you a speedy recovery and no more adhesions!

Your health journey sounds a bit like a game of snakes and ladders, you hit a snake that took you back down a bit but now you know where a couple more ladders are so you can get back to where you were a bit faster. I hope you land on even more ladders for the course of your recovery 💛💛💛💛💛

Charlotte Armstrong Yes - excellent analogy! When I was going through 6 months of chemo I felt the same. Every 3 weeks I slid down a long snake, and it took the next 3 weeks to climb up a long and exhausting ladder, only to find another snake at the top! That analogy really helped me at the time.

Couldn't relate more re mindset of 'oh this is gonna happen again'. I had my stoma for 2 years and then all of a sudden my small intestine twisted itself ☺️👍 cool. It's called volvulus. I had to have emergency open surgery to fix it and was so nervous for a long time after. It's now been another year and I'm fine 😊 try not to worry and celebrate small victories! My grandfather has had several intestinal issues over the past two years and last year it was almost fatal. In the recent weeks we have learned that if these issues don’t clear up he will either have to have a ileostomy or a feeding tube. We were all really taken back and upset because he is the hardest working person and our rock, I would literally be nothing without this man. I somehow stumbled across your videos and I’ve been watching them all night and I am so thankful. Your videos have been so helpful and I feel much more educated so thank you for that. 💙 I hope you get well soon and have a speedy recovery!

Hi Hannah. My 86 year old mother has had a stoma for over 30 years and has always been very embarrassed about it and didn't speak of it much. I stumbled across the videos, of your journey, on TH-cam and showed them to her! She was, absolutely, taken by them! She wished that she had seen something like them 30 years ago! About 5 months after her surgery she also ended up with adhesions and needed a second op to fix things. She actually got a little teary when I told her that you had suffered the same fate. She has asked me to keep her updated on your progress! Thank you for brightening up an 86 year old granny's life! Your videos aren't just for young adults!

I was in hospital with a family member when she had emergency abdominal surgery last month and she was the same way! She had not eaten for days and was not allowed to drink any water. Finally she was allowed to have one cup of ice chips every four hours. She was SO AWARE of the time lol. Then after her surgery she was allowed to have liquids and unlimited ice chips. She was so incredibly ecstatic. I kept having to remind her that she could have more and she was so pleased each time.

Thank you so much for documenting your journey. My mom struggled with UC flare ups for 8 years and finally had her colon removed with open surgery when I was 2 years old (I'm 28 now). She had a stoma for a few months and then had the J Pouch surgery. I've heard lots of her stories but being able to follow your stories as someone my age really puts her experience into perspective for me.
She was going through these struggles when she was my age so, yeah, this is really eye opening for me. thank you!

Then a couple weeks ago the pain and bleeding started again and I go back in for a colonoscopy next week. I just want to say thank you for making these videos!!! Thank you so much for being so transparent and putting everything out there! I had an emergency surgery a few months ago where they found that I had major bowel adhesions from endometriosis and almost all of my organs are glued together. I'm going in next month for surgery and watching you has helped me mentally prepare for the possibility of a resection and/or temporary stoma after meeting with the doctors. It may suck, but it won't be the end of the world like I temporarily feared.

    Visualizing adhesions:
    Normal intestines: spaghetti with butter
Intestines after surgery: spaghetti with sprinkle of cheese, now a bit clumpy
Intestines after super messy surgery: spaghetti with LOTS of cheese, all lumped together.
Basically adhesions are like melted then cooled cheese sticking things together.Where they land is totally luck. And the amount they form is also totatlly luck + how difficult the surgery was + your own ability to form scar tissue (that's what adhesions are).

  • @sammariofan
    @sammariofan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

What a queen. I have adhesions too from my appendix popping and getting it removed. Got a bowel obstruction. 10 years later I still get em. But I've only had one surgery for it. Used to get them once a month, but now it's about 2 or 3 a year. Best thing to do is to mediate to remove negative thoughts, anxiety, and limiting beliefs and massage the area every night. Stay blessed.

Hey Hannah! Know what you're going through. It's a tough time and big respect for powering on through it! From what you've said in this video and your previous videos I've had the same treatments but for Hirschsprung's disease. I had a Stoma for 3 years and had many surgeries, most recently the 'pull-through' which removed my stoma. I had a large part of my bowel removed and the same with the 'megarectum' within the first few surgeries. I'm now 17 and stoma-free. Stay strong and keep doing what you're doing!

Hannah, my father had UC for most of his life, since he was a teenager. He used to boast he knew every public toilet in Sydney, and sometimes he even made it...
When he was in his early 40s he had the surgery done. The poisoned bowel was affecting his liver, his oesophagus, and eyes. Full ileostomy was the only choice in the early 1980s, no reversal available. Once the operation was done and everything settled down he said that it was the best thing he ever did.
Stay strong Hannah, and embrace your new life. The operation gave us our dad back!

I'm so sorry this happened to you Hannah! What you said about just being "really unlucky" with everything that happened after the surgery really rang true for me, the same happened when I had surgery on my jaw last year. Hope you're feeling better and more yourself soon x

Thank you Hannah, be strong. Totally get sharing this as part of the healing process. I’m doing the same on FB with my kidney issues. People ask “Why???”, they just don’t get it. Don’t stop sharing!!!! Prayers and positive vibes to you, Mona and Dan.

Hi Hannah, thanks for posting these videos and being a representative of UC patients. I'm glad you're spreading awareness of UC, because so many people don't know how to be accommodating to a disease they don't understand. Like, I'm just recently learning how to ask for special accommodations because I've always worried that people wouldn't believe me or would think I'm exaggerating. So thanks for being open.

It's cool how you have such a charismatic and relatively funny personality and a stronger than average spirit in order to be handling all of this in such a way to make it actually *interesting and involving* to watch and hear you talk about, (kind of like watching a drama filled, cleverly funny "movie", or at the very least, an interesting, informative learning "documentary" about the topic!), even though it is a topic that most people could *never* talk about to *anyone* , and a topic that where usually someone else would go; "Eww, I don't wanna watch a video about that, that's gross!"... But YOU have the very unique ability to turn this whole ordeal into a very intriguing story that one can't help but watch and listen to, simply because of the way you present it all to everyone who cares to know! That's a really cool quality about you!
It's still quite unfortunate that you even have to be dealing with any of this type of burden in your life, especially at such a young, vibrant age, because it limits what you can do physically and the fun things that I know you really want to be able to do in your younger years of your life!... But "it is what it is", I guess, and at least you seem to be handling this whole thing as well as *anyone* possibly could, as this is a LOT to have to deal with! You are very strong in mind and spirit, so that's good and very helpful here! (I know; you also accept support from caring others when and where you need it to get through this, whether that needs to be physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically! ;) )
Also, along those lines, your BF Dan sounds like a really great guy, staying right by your side throughout this whole process and never giving up on you or getting disgusted by or turned off by the whole process!... Most average guys probably couldn't handle their GF having to go through this sort of thing quite as well as he seems to have!... I think you have a "keeper" there! I would be very supportive too if I was in his position! I just hope I can find a really cool and very beautiful girl like you for myself someday soon! :)
Hopefully you are doing much better and are back to a more "normal" life by now, as I'm watching this a year after you posted it, in the time of the Corona Virus!... Stay safe, healthy, funny, and *happy* ! I wish you the best! :)
All of your fans and subscribers will always continue to look forward to seeing more videos from you whenever you have the time and energy to make them!... No rush tho, you do whatever you gotta do to get back all of your energy and a more "normal" life!

I’ve had multiple abdominal gynaecological surgeries. Can honestly say that adhesions were the most painful and scary experiences. I knew I had minimal organs left for there to be a problem, so couldn’t understand why I was in so much pain.
FYI pineapple juice with mouth sponges is really good for the dryness!

Hannah thank you sooo much for this video!! Roughly 2 years ago at the age of 16 I also had to have surgery twice within six months (the first one was also an emergency, the second a follow up) and for so long I felt like I couldn’t fully share the experience with anyone. I can’t even imagine the level of courage it takes to go over the experience bit by bit. Lots of love💕💕💕

I have watched your channel for over a year now and love the content and your bubbly personality (something we share). I'm not usually a commenter lol but this just really came at a good time. I need to tell you that you are so inspiring to talk about this so openly, here! As you were describing the steps of what was happening it brought me back to when I had stage 4 appendix cancer and I can understand different elements of what you have gone through! You show your bravery in these videos, there are many lows in this process so when you hit a high it feels so great! When you were discussing the NG tube and using the sponge for any type of moisture, I know that is an amazing feeling to get anything!! You have a wonderful attitude about this whole process and I can tell you are a strong person to get through this!! Again thank you for posting this and hopefully many others will be inspired by your bravery!!! This experience has changed your life, but you are a going to be stronger because of it!!! Thank You for sharing your story!!!

I cried at 14:00 ... I had my colon removed in february, had another surgery to create a J-pouch in june and the recovery was faster than the first one (I was lucky enough to get laparoscopy). Friday I had my first blocage, and i was hospitalized and went home today (thankfully without having to have surgery again...). I feel 100% like you describe, it was a lot harder to process than the surgery because it was a huge stepback. On the road to recovery...again... I love how open about it you are. Glad to know you feel better. Take care!

I'm so sorry you had to go through this again. I'm trying to imagine what it would be like and my imagination failed. I had two major surgeries only a few months apart years ago, and though they were elective and not nearly as invasive as yours, they were still very stressful and physically and emotionally draining. Your videos about your experiences are brave and useful to many, and I hope they're cathartic for you.

Not to be a total downer but my mum has had an illiostomy for 24 years and has suffered from adhesions and obstructions so so many times with the longest time out of hospital in 24 years being 2 years. I really hope this doesn't happen to you!

Oh wow you replied! I hate posting something negative so want to reiterate that I hope ..and I'm sure it won't...happen again for you!
Also just a note to say that watching you go through this has opened my eyes to how desensitized I am to what my mum goes through every day and it feels so normal to me as I grew up with it. After your travel with a stoma vlog I called her up and told her how amazing I thought she was and it was very emotional. I have since shown her several of your post surgery videos and she (and I) wishes you all the best xx

Pelvic floor physical therapy has been the best at keeping me out of surgery for Crohn's! The physical manipulation, laser treatments, and ultrasound each week have been life-changing for me! I highly recommend it! After 5 small bowel resections, several surgeries for removal of adhesions, and other complications, I've been surgery-free for the last 10 years!!! I'd rather do PT each week than go thru intestinal surgery!!! Best wishes to you!
