actually the balan costume is gained by breeding the tims in a specific way and doesn't require you to go to act 3 also random fact: the balan costume is actually possible to get with a minimum of 8 statues (though I really don't recommend attempting to get it at 8 statues as it requires playing through 1-1 and 1-boss like 20 times)
I was actually excited for this game when seeing the trailer and then I saw people experience the gameplay and then I immediately died on the inside. One more thing thay was actually good about the game is the CGI opening.
Hey, one of the Balan speedrunners here. It's true there are many problems with the game, but it seems a lot of people just focus on those parts and ignore the rest of the game. Good to hear some positive comments on it (...for a change lol)
The sad thing is that Balan has a good game buried underneath all that garbage. It could have been great if they gave it more time and better execution.
Imagine if instead of entire costumes, you'd unlock something like Gloves, Hats, and Boots from the characters throughout the world, and by combining them into a new outfit, the boots would augment your jumps, the gloves would offer ways to attack or interact with the environment, and the hats would give you passive effects or augment other powers like the Box Fox acting as a sort of ground pound that would transform you if you hit jump again while in the air. Honestly, it feels like they were so close to hitting what could've been a revolutionary platforming system and just did it in the literal worst way conceivable by human minds.
So I've worked on teams with people who are difficult and an overall nightmare to work with and it can make a great project or achieving creative goals a SLOG. I think that's exactly what happened with Balan Wonderland. The fact that the best parts of the game kick off towards the end when Yuji Naka is kicked out tells me that he was one who ended up holding the game back, not the other way around. It's unfortunate that this game tanked as much as it did, but like you said - it could have happened to another game. I'm just glad it wasn't Klonoa 3
Balan is a weird mish-mash of j-rpg influences, early SNES mickey games where the outfits have purposes for each stage, and Nights aesthetics. Again, it COULD be great, but it was badly made. I still want Square making more stuff that isn't rpgs tho. Einhander was a beast of a shmup game.
I think the only thing from Balan that I think was the best was the cutscenes, Music usually sets the mood and while yes it is indeed great, the setting and music never really seemed to go together as seamlessly as Kingdom Hearts.

I think the game would be better without the creepy stares from different characters, and Balan not yanking the kids around like a predator would have helped me like Balan, game design is stupid, but I have seen worse. I think Balan is a lot more bearable than The Quarry, and there is one thing both games have in common. I ain't playing them both for as long as I live.
I don't know if I really buy Yuji Naka's complaints about deadlines. Pokemon games are consistently rushed out, have glitches, and aren't technically impressive. Just look at all the glitches in Scarlet/Violet. But the difference is that those games are really fun to play. So much that, when you come across a glitch, you don't care because the game is just that much fun to play. It just needed some extra polish which it sadly did not get. That's totally not the case at all with Balan Wonderworld. It needed to be thrown in the garbage and started over from scratch.
Can the novel explain the creepy staring? Also, what is there to explain or flesh out when the game does plenty enough to prove that it shouldn't have been made and was better off as an idea that didn't work out.
Look i know a game kinda like this BUT is done well. Please try out graffiti kingdom for ps2 just trust me I think its up your alley. If you see this at least look at it maybe?
