    When I was young and racing in the 70s, only the dudes with rich daddies had Maicos . I did manage to get a first yr YZ AND a first yr mono shock YZ. 250s. The monoshock for me tje only 1st place I ever took.
    When the water cooled bikes came out it was over pretty much for me, couldn’t afford to get a new bike every year and those things were as strong at the end as the beginning. Didn’t lose power like air cooled getting hot.
    I ran here scrambles a few years though, where you could still compete on air cooled. Last race I did on the old 250 Was a 6hr hare scramble. They went out 9 places , I took 4th. What a ball buster it was. Still got my trophies and still love to see the old race bikes.
    My first one was a 72 100 MX yammie, which were really just enduros with knobbies, no lights and a chamber. That was the bug that bit me. Always wanted to get into Huskies back then, but them European bikes was just to high dollar for a kid buying his own.

    I think the greatest bikes I ever laid eyes on were at the greatest motocross race I ever saw which was probably the greatest motocross race that happened in the United States: the 1978 USGP at Unadilla. Mostly factory twin shock bikes, many from European brands. The Russians were there with their KTMs. These bikes were the epitome of twin shock technology. The factory Suzuki’s had 13 1/2” rear travel with twin shocks!! The racing was absolutely phenomenal and marty tripes beat jimmy Ellis ( both on factory Hondas) by .8 seconds over 2 45 min Motos. Great times for a 15 year old kid.

    I remember so well in the mid 1970's when twin shocks began to lean down to increase travel, that was the coolest thing! I had a Husqvarna CR 250 and Motocross Action Mag had a tutorial on how to adapt the Husky frame to this new configuration, and, of course, I did it without batting an eye. It worked well, at least in my mind. Then Yamaha introduced the monoshock, and we were like...-"where are the friggin' shocks? What the heck is this aluminum triangle?".

      it feels like it actually applied to anything. Thing back then were made to last. I wonder if we will have anything like this left from nowadays in 40 years.

    I've had new AND old dirt bikes. New ones are comfy and all, but I much prefer Vintage/Post Vintage bikes. Lot of great memories from the '70's/'80's transition period. Like the '78/'78.5 RM 250, halfway thru the year, Suzuki threw on an aluminum swingarm and plastic tank. Not enough to matter, but enough to piss a lot of people off. Have owned twenty four bikes over the years, but have never ridden a Maico. It's on my 'bucket list', though:)

      Chris, you owe me a keyboard! I drooled all over mine and it shorted out! No, it's not a Lucas. I'm into vintage anything and have owned a '68 BSA Starfire (250) a '67 Norton N15 Atlas, a '72 customized Sportster (16"/21", etc) a '77 Maico 440, 3 Yamaha TT500's and a '79 Yamaha SR500 with a Hi-Per-Kinetics Stage Two 650 engine. Still got that and a '76 TT500. New or newer dirt bikes past 1985 or so just don't have the "soul". Modern 4 stroke single dirt bikes with 20 to 40 hour engine lifespans? Gimme a break! You'd like my book, "The Dirt Gang" about my life off road on 2 wheels during the "Golden Age" of dirt biking (1965-1985) Rick "Super Hunky" Sieman, founder of Dirt Bike Magazine (6/71) wrote the forward.     Good day sir! I just want to ask, one of my friend told me that there was a dirt bike before who used dual shocks in its rare and it has a linkage in it.. I would like to know if what was that bikes name or the model itself..thanks hope you may help me..

      Hi DrAg Prince not sure what bike your referring to although it could be this 1981 LR410 Kramer that had dual shocks and linkage at the rear. th-cam.com/video/emZK6s67nMY/w-d-xo.html

      @@monticlassictv thank you sir for answering my comment, I also watched the link you shared but unfortunately it was not the bike as he discribed to me back then.. as I could remember he told me it was a suzuki bike and the shocks are very seen but has a linkage at the top of it(under the seat).. I am from the philippines sir and I do race motocross here..I want to recreate that kind of set up so that I would have more advantage in doing bigger jumps..I am hoping and I believe that you could help me find this bike he once told me..good day sir!

    Those Maico Bikes were very cool looking ? What happen with that company ? It looks like they kinda started the trend-look for the up and coming single-shock bikes.

    That is Scottish rider Calum Wilson's Curtis Honda unfortunately the bike looks nothing like this now as this machine and his other 510 Fourstroke Husqvarna were both destroyed in a fire when Calum's van caught fire outside his house a couple of years ago. The Husky has since been restored (here is the link to the video . .th-cam.com/video/BBCIOws0ZMI/w-d-xo.html) and the Curtis is currently awaiting the same fate.
