      For sure it was Elon. Only, NASA administrators job is to deal with the politicians in DC, and to compete with them for tax money. That broke vonBraun, and he wasn't even admin. He left NASA very soon after they send him to DC. People are all crazy about this;• they know nothing. But Jared thinks he can do this, so lets wish him good luck and watch what happens.

    • @brianfoss571
      @brianfoss571 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @imconsequetau5275 NASA and military spacecraft generally cannot offset increases in development cost with commercial business during their missions. Space telescopes and Mars rovers can't be commercialized. While there is likely a very niche set of billionaires interested in paying to fly around the Moon for a week, it's not as steady as demand for crewed flight to LEO.
      Offering small-scale, fixed-price tech development contracts upfront can reduce the total cost of a mission. But there will still be need for Flagship missions that "do everything without maintenance" in regimes where NASA has rarely operated, if at all. In the case of the ice giants or the lower atmosphere of Venus, NASA has only operated spacecraft there briefly. You cannot get a successful long-duration mission there by relying on fixed-price contracts.

The resulting chaos from rejiggering the timeline made everything more expensive (think more like billions than millions) and greatly set back the critical moonwalk suit project in particular (hundreds of millions wasted there). Although SpaceX, Blue Origin, & Virgin Galactic, competed for the contracts, bill continuously (heavily) favored Boeing over their competitors. Boeing has had a LOT of serious missteps whether it's in the commercial or space industry.
