Spray Mounting Posters

  • Professionally spray mount your prints to foam board with just spray adhesive.
    This video shows a method to avoid common problems. You place and center your poster before any spraying, then with a brick hold the poster in place. Spray just the backside of half the poster and attach it to the board. Then repeat on other half. Newspapers are used to prevent the spray adhesive from getting on the board.

    The fact that someone took the time perfect a method for mounting posters, then took the time to share it…thank you for that. Mounting posters is one of those things that seems easy, but it is not!

    I bet reason the glue gets on the poster on your second spray is that you’re right handed and it’s a different angle. If you flip the board around so that the part you’re sparing the same angle as the first go round, no glue should get on the poster. Thank you for the tutorial it’s the best one I’ve found and gonna go with this method.

    Thank you! I'm a teacher and I want to tell you that your step-by-step instructions were very clear and well thought out. I have never done this before and my poster turned out perfectly! This has been such a helpful tutorial. I like to do things carefully and I never would have figured this out on my own. Only down side: as I type this I can tell I got spray glue all over my chrome book. Oh well! :)

    Great tutorial. I had to mount two posters in two separate poster frames ( the ones with the acrylic front, cardboard backing and the plastic slide on clips) and I was dreading the mounting part of my posters. Came out great. Couldn't find 3M 45 so bought 3M 77 and worked consciously watching my time.I let it dry for about a minute before sticking the poster down. Couldn't find a brick so I used masking tape to hold the poster in the correct position. Don't have sheets of newspaper so I bought a roll of painters masking paper, worked great. The technique of masking, folding and spraying are the important parts. I even did the arm wave after spraying. Thank you for helping me out WisdomScenes.

    Nice job!!!
    For the first half of the poster, you are using your left hand to spray the glue onto the poster. For the second half of the poster, you use your right hand and are standing at a different angle. If you turn the board around and use the same technique for the second half of your poster (the same as your first half) this will ensure you get no glue underneath on the second half.

    I did this and overall it came out good but I did have problems. First, make sure you use very soft toweling to smooth the poster down as the ones I used scratched the poster. I switched to Viva paper towels and they worked well. Second, my poster had a bit of a curl to it and the 2nd half would not lay down flat while I sprayed it with glue. I had to hold it down with one finger, and inevitably got glue on it. No worries, though, as the job was easy to complete with just one hand. Third, I don't know why but the finished project did have a few bumps in it which, unfortunately, are highly visible under oblique lighting. I have no idea why this happened, and since the guy who did the video doesn't seem to be answering questions, I'm not likely to learn why. Just be aware that it can happen. Good luck!

    I noticed you were using some small, square wiping implements you referred to only as "things." What are these "things" you speak of? Where can i find them? Also, does the adhesive tend to drift more on the first half and then be prone to seepage on the latter?
    Oh, and which section of the newspaper were you using? I personally used the classifieds for weeks to no avail, until it dawned on me that I should be using the arts section. Live and learn, I suppose. Overall, great tutorial. It's really gotten me excited about gluing stuff to other stuff.
    For future tutorials, please for the sake of your viewers, let us know what section to use. I incurred a criippling amount of debt subscribing to multiple newspapers both domestic and foreign.

    I realize this was published three years ago, but I'm hoping the author, or someone who knows the answer, will get this. I have two pieces printed as banners (not posters) by Staples. The resulting surface is plastic, not paper. Do you know if the 3M general purpose adhesive 45 works on this type of material?

    • @DailyWeekend
      @DailyWeekend 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It should work the same. If the back is particularly smooth/glossy you could sand it very lightly with fine grit sand paper (such as 180 grit.) This will give the glue more to adhere to without making the back actually rough, just make sure to wipe it off before applying the glue.

    Lay your poster board down on the table, Take a thick piece of plastic pre cut larger then the poster board with a cut out the size of the poster your are pasting down on the poster board, Lay that plastic piece over the poster board and line up the cut out "which is the same size as the poster" over the poster board and line it up directly where you want the poster placed, Then spray the poster board with your adhesive putting a nice thin coat, Remove the plastic piece and place your poster directly over the area "which would be shinny and the exact same size as the poster" then take your 'Tool" which is a rubber squeegee tool and running that tool over the poster, I like to use a painters edge tool sold at lowes for $3 because it has little hairs/bristles on it and glides right over the poster with ease. Hope this makes sense wish i could actually explain it better because this method is such a easy method and it takes no time to master and repeat over and over again with the same results every time. You method is nice but i see lots of mistakes and a mess afterwards. I bet both methods work fine and all but maybe try this method i am certain you will switch the way you do things right afterwards.

    One comment: Spray mounting (or dry mounting) should NEVER be used with any poster or print that has any value. Once mounted in this way, a poster can never be removed and these mothods also destroys a poster's value and "collectability."
