Its now sunset and less than an hour after the quake . The resorts in the area have brought all their guests here to this high spot. We can see the water here and the Gili islands I think if all those tourist that are stuck there the islands are all low and flat with the exception of gili Trawangan that has a small hill . The tourists around me from the resorts are all wealthy people. They are complaining they want to leave they want a taxi they want to go to the airport. I reason with them that we are all stuck here that this is a disaster beyond imagination. I tell them the roads or broken with giant cracks across making them impassable. The airport is shut down the entire island is shut down and they will have to sleep on the ground until help arrives. I was able to keep in contact with my wife and child alk night thankfully the cel service was still active but looking back it would have been better to stay together. Seeing them in the following morning after a long night if continuous after shocks wondering if the volcano would explode made me realize family and being together is way more important than anything else The following days were kind of a state if shock. Frantic searches for people trapped the smell of those unable to be found in time and really total self reliance. Fortunately i had stocked the freezer with food due to it being high season but gas for the generator became a golden item We had no water and we needed water. I would go to the beach and bring sea water for washing and our neighbors would give us water for drinking from their well . But it also took water from them. I knew i had to dig a well. Searching on TH-cam i found a guy in Africa that dug a well just using a pipe and digging inch by inch cm by cm . It took me two weeks of everyday digging this way but after giving up several times each morning i would be back at it until we finally got water and to this day it still functions People stayed with us who had lost their homes and some people would look at my wooden bungalows that were still in good shape, why? Why ? Why am i lucky and they not. It was obvious that traditional wooden style construction better withstood the shaking if an earthquake that brick housese with heavy ceramic tile roofs After a few days they had fixed the road and an endless line of cars and trucks coming and going bringing supplys and evacuating stunned tourists. Military planes were flying in aid and boats were evacuating people to Bali. After a few day president Jokowi came to personally see the damage and as he drove by he rolled down his window, looked at me ,looked at my bungalows and nodded . I knew what he was thinking. He later gave a speach promise of financial support and how traditional Indonesian construction is to be appreciated and that nee technology needs to be implemented in earthquake resistant housing. For me this was lesson in being prepared and to not take things for granted and the importance of keeping family together
The number one lesson I learned from this is that when someone says, "Well at least we're on an island with no Komodo Dragons", prepare myself to be eaten by one of a thousand Komodo Dragons.
That would be utterly terrifying! I watched a long video on those dragons.........watching them eat animals bigger than themselves.....wiggling & making adjustments as I watched the hooves disappear into it's mouth! God - I have nightmares about it, STILL! 😵💫😱💀👀 I challenge anyone who hasn't seen this, to watch a video - there's lots of video's on U-tube!‼️
@@cherylfox6765 What makes this worse is that those lizards have the ability to smell prey anywhere on the island and komodo dragons have also been known to dig up fresh human graves to get at the body inside. Basically this giant lizard has a crazy sense of smell and a taste for human flesh alongside massive teeth and anti-coagulant venom. They can also run 13 mph for short distances.
Lawyers don't need to get involved I just hope they were apologized to and given some type of gift for their troubles maybe even some dumb piece of pottery made by the man's wife that would mean more to me than a judge telling me I was a victim.
In places like this lawyers are practically non existent. And law enforcement not common. The best would be if locale took their own action against these terrible people.
@makinnewcounts6676 lawyers absolutely need to be involved. Even if only to make sure these people never lead a dive expedition again. It could save someone's life
Seriously? Try being eaten by a Cammodo Dragon! Have you seen the video's of them eating animals their size? It's quite horrifying. At least with shark's, one bite & you bleed out quickly, like falling asleep. Being eaten by a Dragon? It's saliva is venomous & paralyzes you, then it swallow you whole, still alive!
I can't believe the narrator didn't address the issue of the company leaving the divers behind. What was their excuse? Were they held responsible in any way. What was their name so others don't book them. I'm a SCUBA instructor who has worked all over the world, and there is NO EXCUSE for this behavior.
Most of the time, when the divers do these drift dive things, they sign liability forms, as it's a huge risk to do. Most of them have lots of waivers to sign before doing these activities. Which is why travel insurance is nearly triple for certain activities on holidays. Probably why not much was done to them.
Well, at some point they have to leave, when theyre low on fuel. And its not like, they just went back and forgot all about the divers. They launched a search and rescue operation. Ofc it was an ordeal, but it was a risk, they took when going drift diving. From this video, it sounds like, the company went by the book, its just unfortunate, that they didnt see the divers, when they were searching for them to pick them up, b4 they had to return due to fuel.
I loved this story of solidarity and resilience, it gives hope that somehow human being has the ability to survive no matter what is the situation or obstacles 🥰
I just returned from Bali and Gili island Indonesia. There are some great dive companies & some great dive masters you would dive with anytime. Most are Australians and Americans living in Indonesia. When it comes to the laid back life of the Indonesians, they will leave you stranded at sea if their finish time or paid time runs out. It’s the ones from other islands like Java and not the Balinese that are the worst. Just a surfer from Australia found out the hard way, only months ago. (Lucky he survived) They don’t think, like most do. Safety in construction, to brushing their own teeth is forgotten or nonexistent. They do not care about you, only the amount of dollars they can get from you. When this runs out, so to can your life.
@@WeeJasperVetClinic Wow, I wouldn't call that laid back, I'd call that murderous. They would know they are almost certainly condemning their customers to death.
What an incredible story. Thank you! There must be some water on that island? The animals couldn't survive without it. Komodo dragons don't actually tackle their prey to kill. They bite them, and bacteria in their mouths cause a massive infection in the prey. Then the dragons follow them until they die.
Nah. It is certainly a good idea to have one, but this viruatally never happens. This is straight up incompetency on behalf of the Dive Boat operators. You ALWAYS do a check after a dive, count everyone, call their names, have them raise their hands. Massive breach of procedure. This is very unusual and is not something that has happened many times, since most Dive boat operators stick to procedure. The operators should never be allowed to operate again after this.
What about the true story of the couple that went to Aruba on their honeymoon and was left in the open sea from a dive boat. They counted the people wrong and didn't realize their mistake till the next morning when they went to their dive boat and found both the backpacks of the two people left at sea Terry check their hotel never slept there and everybody including helicopters and the Coast Guard were on their way back to the dive site in the open ocean to hopefully rescue them. The man was attacked by sharks that night and the woman thought there was no way out so she took her belt off for buoyancy and drowned. They found this out because they had a board with them that they used to write messages back and forth while under the water and they found it with messages from her. Google it it's a very interesting story very sad but true!!😢😢😢
It's actually quiet common and not super dangerous. Allows you to go greater distances under water without taking up too much air as you don't have to move. And yes, it is hard to say exactyl where you will surface but the currents are not suddenly changing directions, so you do now which direction you are drifting. This was just the people on the boat being negligent.
Bullshit. Drift diving is safe. I do it regularly. The problem is that idiots do not do it with locators. Use systems like ENOS and you are safe. Do not use them, and you get your well deserved Darwin Award.
Like an episode of "I Shouldn't Be Alive". Guys' small plane crashed in the middle of the Sea of Cortez. The only survivor floated and swam all night, alone in the ocean, to reach land. A drifting log saved him too. I can't think of many events more terrifying. It's called "Alone in the Deep Blue".
Good morning JR! Thank you for the video! I can't believe the support boat left them behind, but I'm glad that Jim, Charlotte, Kath, Laurant, and Helena all survived their ordeal. Those Komodo Dragons are pretty scary looking creatures, and I'm glad that no one got bit by one. Enjoy your vacation and stay safe out there! Timber
The deadliness of komodo dragons is that their mouths are full of bacteria, they tend to bit something then follow it around until it drops dead of infection and then eat it. That gives them more bacteria. That means even a minor bite can lead to death.

When going to Indonesia surfing or diving always take a EPIRB & waterproof flashlight that will last min 8 hours. Sadly when you money runs out, so to can your life. The Balinese are so friendly & helpful, but the ones from other islands think of only two things, money & themselves. They will leave you stranded at sea and take your belongings thinking you won’t be needing them again. Just like a surfer from Australia found out the hard way not so long ago. Lucky his family ended up paying for a helicopter to search for him and he was located the following day, There is no safety in Indonesia. I have seen the worst dive crews that should never be allowed to operate. Stick to Australian and or American dive run companies operating in Indonesia, that don’t have lazy laid back workers that will leave you just because they are hungry.
Yo I had the same thing happen on Komodo Island. Ordered DoorDash Chick-fil-A and didn't tip! Leathery head jerks Even made me get extra Polynesian sauce. Smh Won't deliver to them again
Eight-FOOT stilts? Seriously? Or do you mean 8-inch stilts? Eight feet is overkill. One ' means feet. Two '' means inches, as in 5'2" (five feet, two inches).
I have to say my fav animal is the Komodo dragon but I would never want to see one that close up!! It’s so refreshing to know that they all made it. That’s not usually the end of these story’s. 😁 I hope the captain that just left them there got in some kind of trouble there is no excuse for leaving people like that especially when you’re the one that brought them out there. That boat should not have went in until every single person that went out was back on that boat. The scary part is this is not an uncommon thing. I don’t believe it happens a lot, but it’s happens before. And as far as I can remember, the two people that were left or in the middle of the ocean and they were never found. When you go on vacation, you have to realize that, you have to be very careful and worry about you because the people you pay to worry about you don’t usually. So happy that they were all able to go home and see their families and have more adventures.
I also read about an incident where the party boat left a couple behind in the ocean, and they were never found. Someone did NOT do a correct head-count when all the divers got back to the boat! I can't imagine anything worse than being left in the ocean, far from shore, while diving. Sure, you can stay afloat with your BC inflated, but no water to drink gives you less than three days, if no marine creatures don't get you. Ocean currents can take you far from where they THINK you should be, so they rescuers must get reliable info on currents, which way they were going at that time on that day and try to figure where you would end up one, two, 5 days later, which could be hundreds or miles away from your start point! Just a very bad scene however you figure it! I just remembered, I think the incident I was referring to above, was a movie called "Adrift" and I remember not liking the way it ended, with leaving the couple out there to die!
I would say a good rule of thumb, is if the price they quote you sounds too good to be true - find another boating company that looks busy? Maybe ask around, when you get there, first.
@@cherylfox6765unfortunately that’s not it. Big companies and well known companies have done this too, it comes down to that one individual who does head count and is supposed to watch out for people. Some folks just don’t pay attention. We had a guide that left us on the rock , I know it’s not the same as leaving you in the water but before boat took off we talked to him and he said not to get on the boat yet, he would come and get us when it was time, so we sat there and talking to other divers. Then o looked and saw our boat was sailing away, I yelled at another dive master saying we are supposed to be on the boat, they called him and made them return the boat. As we got onto it he says oh sorry forgot to come to get you. If I didn’t catch them as they sailed away we would have missed it completely. Then the same dive master was totally ignorant during the dives, paid no attention, didn’t give briefings, he was the first one to get in the water and the first one to get out 🙈 one diver had faulty equipment and nearly drowned because his BcD would not inflate, this dive master didn’t bother to switch his BCD even after knowing that it wasn’t working. And he was working with very good company that is very busy too. So it all comes down to an individual, we had other dives with the same company with other dive masters and it was a night and day difference. It was a superb experience, dive masters were very attentive, very helpful, paying attention to every detail. Anyway, it all comes down to an individual.

This is a great story and I am so happy they survived. But I can't help it whenever I hear about Komodo dragons, I think of Jim Carrey eating the way they do.
Sounds like the boat driver might have known they were missing but headed back because of low fuel? How do you not see 6ft bright orange things and whistles blowing? You can't just leave people in the ocean!
While those markers are 6 feet tall, they're also extremely narrow- not much bigger than one of those pool "noodles". You don't have to be that far away to miss it against moving water, even if it is bright colored. And especially if it's in an area where you're not expecting to see it. The whistles are just regular whistles- again, easy to miss if yourefar enough away, even just a couple hundred yards. And if the wind is blowing in that direction, blowing past you and towards the sound, it's blowing the sound away from you. Any tiny tweet you might hear from a distance can be easily covered by sea birds as well, and/or boat noise. One of those little pocket air horns would be a better choice, I'd think, if you could keep water out of it during your dive. Sound would carry further and wouldn't blend into any other noise as nothing sounds like that naturally on the water. If I'm diving in a high current area from a boat with other groups, I'm only doing it if I can carry some kind of waterproof sack with a flare gun in it.
It's better to run out of fuel and be stranded in a boat than to leave people stranded in the ocean. The boat floats, people don't. You can always radio another boat to bring more fuel.
@@k.elysium6819 No, its not. If u run out of fuel, u cant help them. Nor can u get help for them. Going back and launching a search and rescue is the correct action. Ur assuming, they can radio help. The dive instructor and the other diver drifted through the night and dsy all the way south to nusa peninda . Lucky for them they didn't get sucked out by strong currents into the indian ocean. The currents between Bali snd Lombok are some of the strongest in the world, with the pacific ocean side 2 meter higher than the Indian ocean side currents between the gili island can be sometimes close to 10 knots + Boating accidents are common so one must be aware and have a personal safety plan

For reference, 27C is the temperature of lap pools. Very cold if you don’t move, but totally fine as long as you’re swimming. Obviously in this situation you need to conserve energy but if you can manage to swim in short bursts of a few minutes *safely* it can quickly warm you. I’ve had to tread water for several hours in 27C water and didn’t get cold but I was fully clothed and had nothing for buoyancy so it probably meant I expended more energy and so I kept warmer. I actually have a similar story to this and burnt the skin off both my feet. I was at the gift market place and swapped my t shirt for a vest to try it and brought it. Then went to the boat but at the harbour had to run back to get the t shirt at the market I'd forgotten and run back to the boat. That same day before we got to Komodo went hiking on a different island and at the top of the hill looked down and the boat the Germans had arrived in had sunk by the time we got to the top of the hill. Think another boat came to get them but got a good photo of the sunken ship

I go back back through the people digging in the streets the falken buildings already masses of people are heading up to high ground. Its been less than 30 min i know if a tsunami is coming it would be soon as quickly as i can i grab a backpack and stuff out important stuff in it ,shut off all the gas electric and water and get on my bike near me is a hill and I know a trail i can take to avoid the roads which are all cracked and broken. Its now sunset and less than an hour after the quake . The resorts in the area have brought all their guests here to this high spot. We can see the water here and the Gili islands
I think if all those tourist that are stuck there the islands are all low and flat with the exception of gili Trawangan that has a small hill . Seeing them in the following morning after a long night if continuous after shocks wondering if the volcano would explode made me realize family and being together is way more important than anything else
The following days were kind of a state if shock. Frantic searches for people trapped the smell of those unable to be found in time and really total self reliance. Fortunately i had stocked the freezer with food due to it being high season but gas for the generator became a golden item
We had no water and we needed water. I would go to the beach and bring sea water for washing and our neighbors would give us water for drinking from their well . But it also took water from them. I knew i had to dig a well. Searching on TH-cam i found a guy in Africa that dug a well just using a pipe and digging inch by inch cm by cm . It took me two weeks of everyday digging this way but after giving up several times each morning i would be back at it until we finally got water and to this day it still functions
People stayed with us who had lost their homes and some people would look at my wooden bungalows that were still in good shape, why? Why ? Why am i lucky and they not. It was obvious that traditional wooden style construction better withstood the shaking if an earthquake that brick housese with heavy ceramic tile roofs
After a few days they had fixed the road and an endless line of cars and trucks coming and going bringing supplys and evacuating stunned tourists.
I challenge anyone who hasn't seen this, to watch a video - there's lots of video's on U-tube!‼️

@@cherylfox6765 What makes this worse is that those lizards have the ability to smell prey anywhere on the island and komodo dragons have also been known to dig up fresh human graves to get at the body inside. In places like this lawyers are practically non existent. And law enforcement not common. The best would be if locale took their own action against these terrible people.

Watch open water. Based on 2 divers left at sea in 1998
Tell me about it
I can't believe the narrator didn't address the issue of the company leaving the divers behind. What was their excuse? Were they held responsible in any way. What was their name so others don't book them. I'm a SCUBA instructor who has worked all over the world, and there is NO EXCUSE for this behavior.
Amazing point!
Never saw anyth

Was anyone held responsible for leaving the divers?!
How incredibly selfish. If I ever go there I’ll have to make sure I get the right instructors .
@@Mars0984 how will you know who is the right one ?
@@WeeJasperVetClinic Wow, I wouldn't call that laid back, I'd call that murderous. They would know they are almost certainly condemning their customers to death.
I doubt they had any kind of liability insurance.
What an incredible story. Thank you! There must be some water on that island? The animals couldn't survive without it. Komodo dragons don't actually tackle their prey to kill. They bite them, and bacteria in their mouths cause a massive infection in the prey. Then the dragons follow them until they die.
Anyone diving in indonesia without a satellite beacon is INSANE
I say that about anyone venturing into remote areas - whether alone or not.
Indonesia was my first dive after getting certified and my equipment failed. Welcome to diving I guess?
Finally someone with a brain. I cannot believe how many airheads go into the water without ENOS and call themselves „divers“.
I'm sat about to go on a boat to Komodo tomorrow and this is recommended to me 😂
Fingers crossed!
Be safe!
Do these boat captains NOT do head counts of their divers?!
They should, and they also should check upon arrival where logs of the boats and passengers are to be held. "Should"....
What an amazing story and narration! Thanks! 👍
I have been there. The island, the dragons, the ocean and the drifts are no joke!
Why am I crying tears of joy for them ALL 😥
“Drift diving”, uh I never knew there was such a thing as it seems so ridiculously obviously dangerous! Wow 😳🤦🏻♀️
I agree. Riding an undersea current and hoping the dive boat finds you wherever you happen to surface sounds like a very risky plan.
This is definitely my worst fear. The only thing that would be worse would be if you were completely alone.
imho, not wise to put your life on the line via drift diving in a third world country. no thanks, ill pass.
Or in a cave underwater
All alone at night in the middle of the dark ocean with sharks circling and biting at you would be awful to experience.

Timber
The deadliness of komodo dragons is that their mouths are full of bacteria, they tend to bit something then follow it around until it drops dead of infection and then eat it. That gives them more bacteria.
That means even a minor bite can lead to death.

Many of these kinds of situations have things in common, such as assuming the other people are on the same page. Know the people you're counting on. Also, carry supplies, such as water, chocolate, caffeine pills, pepper spray, survivor knife; even a powerful laser pointer.

Is there any information why that boat left without them? How could they even do that?
None. I didn't find anything. Maybe the Frenchmen who did blame them, but wasn't a lot of info on him
Sounds like the couple who were diving in Australia and got left behind and died. Does no one think of taking a quick roll call when it's time to leave? It would be so easy to do, and no one would be left behind then.

😮really ffs talk about earn your keep lol wow 😮
Outstanding episode. Keep them coming!

Mindboggling
It's better to run out of fuel and be stranded in a boat than to leave people stranded in the ocean. The boat floats, people don't. You can always radio another boat to bring more fuel.
@@k.elysium6819 No, its not. If u run out of fuel, u cant help them. Nor can u get help for them. Going back and launching a search and rescue is the correct action. Ur assuming, they can radio help. Here on Lombok not long ago , one of the Gili dive boat captain left the divers when they were underwater to go get fuel. While he was gone they surfaced . The currents here are very strong. The dive instructor and the other diver drifted through the night and dsy all the way south to nusa peninda . Lucky for them they didn't get sucked out by strong currents into the indian ocean. The currents between Bali snd Lombok are some of the strongest in the world, with the pacific ocean side 2 meter higher than the Indian ocean side currents between the gili island can be sometimes close to 10 knots +

That same day before we got to Komodo went hiking on a different island and at the top of the hill looked down and the boat the Germans had arrived in had sunk by the time we got to the top of the hill. Think another boat came to get them but got a good photo of the sunken ship
Holy cow! I have great respect for komodo dragons, they scare me to death! How on earth did these divers get left behind? Not like it's a big ship. They should be shut down forever! How could the ship captain not see the 6 foot red balloons? Incredible incompetence!
