Fortunate, indeed, is the Gilda, who sang opposite Bastianini, as her Rigoletto!! Scotto possessed the pure, mellifluous timbre, so necessary for the virginal ‘Gilda’…..having sung in two different productions of this work myself, ( one was a John Copley production, conducted by Sir Edward Downes ) to have had Bastianini as my ‘Rigoletto’, would have been marvellous! To have had such a brilliant voice as Bastianini, for such a short time, because his life was cut short by terminal cancer, is a momentous loss to the operatic art! Vale, Ettore…VALE!!👏💐

@Barone Vitellio Scarpia Personally, although I prefer Bastianini vocally to Gobbi, Bastianini and Callas just didn't have the chemistry that she and Gobbi do. Gobbi IS Rigoletto and Callas IS Gilda, and they make you believe Gobbi IS Callas' father.
XxSaruman82xX On a lot of recordings here on TH-cam he sings a bit thick, mostly in the mid range, which is a big part of why his diction is affected. Siepi had a similar thing going on most of the time.
The demise of Scotto: wanting to be Maria Callas so bad, wanting to leap on her level and falling miserably to a low that is neither bad or "controversial", but just plain sad
Bastianini is one of the greatest performing artists ever.
Yes
Majestic duet, Bastianini it truly outstanding - the king of dramatic Verdi baritones!

Magnifica interpretazione
Il Rigoletto of reference, Kraus, Bastianini, Signora Scotto, Signora Cossotto. Dir Gavazzeni
This is marvelous thank you
De qué año es esta grabación?
What a tragically poetic death Bastianini’s. Throat cancer.

Džildas un Rigoleto dueta skats 1.c. (no 3:50)
This duet is in fact one of my desert island discs. The Callas/Gobbi version, not this one, though.
If I hear correctly, do they sing semitone higher?
Probably just the recoding technology and playback settings
I love Bastianini, but it's a terrible shame another soprano didn't record this.

@@xxsaruman82xx87 for you. For me Ettore Is Rigoletto.
Very nice, here Bastianini doesn’t have the bad diction and thickness in the middle voice that he has on a lot of his recordings, great indeed..
Wait, when did he have bad diction?

@@SacredTemplar8 They are still great. He isn't throaty at all.
@@SacredTemplar8 ma cosa dice! Non si può leggere una cosa simile.

This was still early in her career before she attempted ill fated repertoire
They sang the notes. Bastianini's voice was splendid. But where was the dramatic tension, the emotion of the duet? Give me Callas and Gobbi any day!
