The entire album “The Spell” is a masterpiece, it’s one of those rare no-skip, no-shuffle, perfect from start to finish works. They’re incredible live!
Yes I echo what people have said of them live. Its incredible watching their singer Anna Murphy jump between vocals, flute, hurdy gurdy and piano all in one set (and often in the the same song) and do them all so well.
A flute on top of that really dark, doomy sound, never heard that before but it works so well. And there is smth about that chorus that gives it a sort of lullaby feel. Loved this.
I remember seeing this when it first came out and being disappointed by the lack of hurdy gurdy. Glad this made me reconsider it. “Redemption” - especially the last 2 minutes or so - off the first album is absolutely stellar.
It's funny, because there actually IS hurdy-gurdy in this song. It's hidden in the chorus, but it's very far back in the mix and only there to add texture. In the acoustic version it's very prominent, you should check that one out. Redemption is a song that hits very deep for me, especially because of the lyrics. It's a shame noone has made a lyric video for that. If I find the time and skill I'll make it at some point 😉
Love how this band just goes full creative allowing the result to wow the listener instead of worrying about how to craft it to make sure it sounds like the fad of the year. As someone else mentioned the acoustic version is very worthy of checking out if you like this song. Insomnia is my fav of theirs and if you do another from them I'd check out the live version so you can see how well they translate this music with a small group.
Although I totaly agree in what you said, I personally do not recommend the official live version of insomnia for a first listen. Having seen them live a couple of days ago, I can confirm they are incredibly good. But whoever mixed and edited that video did not do a good job. The mixing is horrible, there is no bass, the guitar sound is super thin, Anna's voice is great but the band is much more than that. On top of that, the video is poorly edited, audio is often out of sync and the video material has been obviously taken from different takes or gigs. I personally do not like it at all. Some phone recordings are actually better than that. I hope at some point we will have professionally recorded live material. Anna should mix it herself, like she did for the acoustic Death, which is phenomenal.
Her voice was amazing, juxtaposed against the dark music underneath. I agree, great contrast. I'm not sure I'd listen to this everyday, but i wouldn't mind checking them out to see if i could find something else i like. ❤ & ✌️
Anna is such a talented singer, and this song is just different .She lullls you in with these Lana Del Rey-esque vocals , and then the music takes you on a trip. Haunting and Beautiful, I love it!🤘🤘
Freeze is my favourite song from them, it was the first one of theirs i heard and it really grabbed me the first time i heard it. (Not many songs do that for me).
Ah my lullaby! I really had to fight my body to not just take a nap while watching this, this song has always been comforting to me especially the acoustic version on TH-cam. I am glad you found this song as mesmerizing as I do, my favourite Cellar Darling song is still Insomnia.
Thank you my friend, thanks for your reaction to this. I really appreciate it. I guess this is the song that hooked me to Cellar Darling. The doomy evil, but also soothing part in the middle is just genius. I was at their concert 3 days ago. I could not believe it, but Anna' s singing is live even better than on track. She not only has a beautiful voice, she has pipes. And she plays 3 instruments at the same time, constantly switchng between those 3. She even tunes her instrument in the middle of the song while singing. I would f**k up all the time, lol.....Such a talent, and such an underrated band. If you are interested, there is an acoustic rendition if this song on youtube they made during lockdown. It quite drastically changes the mood of the song but it's great in its own way.
Ok hey so. I was at one point a high enough patreon tier level with Ignea that I could request a song cover with Helle (Ignea's vocalist). This is the song I requested! It's really well hidden, but if you're interested, I could send you personally a link.
Live they were amazing, /chefs kiss/
And such amazing sweethearts.

this song represents to me the seductiveness of death for someone that yearns for it
You gotta hear “Dance” by this band, it’ll get you there lol
She reminds me of Amy Lee. I definitely enjoyed this. The flute was really cool.
Right dude! I can hear Amy!

I got to see em!
Thank you so much for this. Please, more Cellar Darling! ✨️
I thought her voice was stunning and the flute just finished the song to perfection.
Right!? so good
always apleasure to see you Gaye
Ahh, I saw these live supporting Opeth a few years ago, they certainly give a good show.
Dude yea, this was great!
Oh this woman voice !! And the construction of this song, mixing everything I love (beautiful bass, sweet melody...)
You said it best!

YESSS. That flute blew me away dude.

I loved it friend!!! I see what draws you!
Love Cellar Darling! This album is so weird and creative. You should try Eluveitie (Anna's original band) if you haven't already.
I got one reaction of them. I need to dive more into them.
Ok hey so. I was at one point a high enough patreon tier level with Ignea that I could request a song cover with Helle (Ignea's vocalist). This is the song I requested! It's really well hidden, but if you're interested, I could send you personally a link.
I can add it to the list.
Doesn't even have to be a reaction. Just something for you to listen to at your own leisure.
Trying to figure out how to send you a link to it, since youtube reaaaally doesn't like links in comments. 🤔
