    Thank you for showing us a historical location most of us will never get the opportunity to visit. It brings a lot of things into perspective. For one, the small size of the building, and how that would have contributed to the feeling of being trapped and claustrophobic, something that may have helped the decision to surrender when flight seemed impossible. Also, I have seen pictures of similar buildings and they aren't made for comfort, just a stone box with a dirt floor. You would think they would have posted a sentry, but the cold probably seemed more than enough to discourage pursuit. I have read Garrett knew the location, and had been here with Billy before, so it would have seemed precautions were justified, but who knows?

    Nice video and new subscriber here from Scotland, always had a fadcination with the characters of the wild west and american wars of independence eras, its like here in scotland, one could say these lands and trails are nice looking dusty walks ..but the history and blood that drenched said type of places ...while taking those walks and thinking of the historical stories and tales is quite fascinating innthe eerie silences with just the sounds of nature, thinknof pistols and shotguns blazing away or swords clashing etc, these are the places I want to visit when I come to America the trail of Billy the kid and the old ghost towns etc rather than big bustling cities, nice video :)

    I'm French and from a very young age, I've always had a borderline obsessive fascination with the far west / conquest of the west period!
    and i think americans have a huge but huge chance to have places like this historic place to go and see with their own eyes the old towns of the far west still standing as they are or objects still as they are or those famous gorgeous Victorian homes. In France, there are simply no Victorian mansions. the United States has so many mysterious places like this that you are lucky, believe me, even these huge virgin spaces where you can come and meditate, something impossible in France

      I live a few miles from where Pat Garret was shot and have been to many of these places. The old wagon trail to Mesilla is on the back fence line of my property. At the same time, I've wanted to visit beautiful places in France. I'll try not to take such things for granted in the future.

    Great video Lucas. I had permission to visit the site 2 1/2 years ago. As I was leaving on the highway on the other side of the train tracks, a coyote jumped in front of my jeep and I had to swerve and hit my brakes. Lucas - thanks so much! As another commenter said, I also am curious about the distance from ditch to rock cabin. I counted your footsteps to get a rough estimation, each time you walked to, or from, the cabin "front door." I can hear your boot crunching the ground with each step. Also, the camera swayed slightly each time your weight shifted on each step. Walking to the cabin I came up with about 33 to 35 steps. Walking from the cabin 30. And since I assume you were not w/alking in yard-long steps, maybe 2 to 21/2 feet per step instead? Which puts the distance at what, about 80 feet I think. Does that sound about right? If you go back, take one of those measuring wheels - not sure what they're called but I got one at a hardware store for $9 - if you think of it. Hell I'll send you mine. I use it at historic and archeological sites to measure distances. Anyway - just a thought. And does about 80 feet seem right? Each time you walked from ditch to cabin you consistently took more steps than coming from cabin to ditch. Loved the video. Wish it were longer. What do the property owners think of it?

    • @LucasSpeer2023
      @LucasSpeer2023  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wish I would have measured it, but honestly didn't think to. It was well within rifle range and in my opinion pistol range as well. Poor Charlie Bowdre didn't have much of a chance at that range.

    Thanks Lucas, fabulous video. I've seen a few others about Stinking Springs, but yours is the best. Showing the arroyo in relation to the building. I just wanted to get your impressions on a couple of things. Jim East said they crawled up the arroyo till they were about 30 feet from the door. Assuming they were still hidden it seemed further than 30 feet on your video. Jim East described the building as 30 feet by 12 feet. Do you remember if those measurements would be accurate? The photo of the building supposed to be the one at Stinking Springs does not appear to be the correct size. Thanks, Paul

    • @LucasSpeer2023
      @LucasSpeer2023  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, I really appreciate that! Jim East I'd the only one out if those who left first hand accounts that approximated a measurement. I doubt they measured the crime scene distance after the shooting, as we would today, so I would take his measurement from memory many years after the fact with a grain of salt. Pat Garrett described it as a dry arroyo with a bed, which matches this one exactly. It would have been an easy shot to hit Bowdre at that short distance. The location of Stinking Springs is well established and is still just three to four miles from the Brazil Wilcox ranch, as it was described back then. Thanks for sharing your question and for watching the video.

I live in Tennessee so I will not be on the property but I would like to pin it on my map. Thanks and once again great video.

      google earth. Lat 34°26'35.53"N long 103°58'2.00"W It's in this area going off descriptions and a lot of detail in this video showing where it's at. It is slightly less than 16 mi. from Ft Sumner. I can't find the exact location, but I'm convinced that I'm close. If you go 1.25 mi. to the SE and zoom in enough, google earth will show "stinking spring". I'm like you, I will never go there, but like to pin historical sites on my google earth.

    I was wondering, how many yards roughly was it from where Garrett and the posse opened fire to where the front door was? If Garrett really cut the rope holding the horses they didn’t shoot it must have been fairly close. Cutting rope with a bullet is very difficult, except in the movies. Great video.

  • @johnnyquest3707

    I had commented wondering how far it was from where the posse fired to the front door. Then I saw that it took you about 34 seconds to walk from Garrett's probable position to the rock house location and it took about 34 seconds. Walking that at about the same pace in my back yard put the distance at about 30 yards, or a couple yards more. I guess I had a lot of time on my hands that day. For Garrett to shoot ropes holding the horses is not easy. So he had to be fairly close. 30ish yards sounds reasonable.
