a cheap hotplate hooked up outside prevents a lot of mess and worry especially if you have porcelain sinks, granite or marble counters etc. I like to take them after totally dry, spray with clear adhesive and quickly sprinle lightly with fine glitter...makes great arrangements for Christmas. At Christmas, just tucking the dried dyed or spray painted (fabric or floral paint or I have used the dye in a spray bottle) and glittered into the branches of a tree is so pretty.
Oh my Gosh. If I had your Hydrangea garden, I would think I had died and gone to heaven!! From one Hydrangea lover to another, great video! Thanks. ✌🏻❤
Hi Patti, This video just happened to show up (I’m a subscriber and fellow decoupage crafter) I have my 1st hydrangea in a big frost proof planter. It is growing and blooming beautifully! I plan to propagate some leaf cuttings soon. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of how to dry and dye the blooms. I’m going to try and do a few blooms. It’s very interesting to me that my blooms begin as a light pink before deepening to blue (the designated color of the plant.) BTW, your tip on decoupage glue was a game changer! I gave several plates for Christmas gifts last year.
I preserve hydrangeas with glycerin and water, because I like how they stay supple indefinitely. I will be trying it with the Rit Dye....perhaps two processes at once.
Hi Patti, Long time from your channel. Nice to come back to it for new topic "drying flowers"!!!! In my land no access to fresh Hydrengea as it is not growing in this land, but I purchased one stem from a flower shop! which imported flowers from their mother home, they nice , look fresh but for sure not from planting yard directly!! they keep a small water feeder in their bottom to keep them live, I try to put my stem in a vase without water but it wilted and die??!!!
I very much enjoyed your video, and I learned a lot. I will be trying your method this coming week on some of my browning hydrangeas. I am hoping to turn them a medium to dark blue. Thanks for your information on You Tube.
Hi Nancy! let me know if you try this method! I am not sure b/c I haven't tried it but I thought the water had to be boiling for the dye to work. If what you do works, please let me know! Or let me know if you post a video, I would love to watch! Patti
What about dyeing them While they are on the plant! Take the dye bath out to them and bend them carefully in! Pink or red all winter when all is white around and above them!
Such a very informative video, i love hydrangeas : ). I tried your method of dyeing the hydrangea into boiling water but it cooked the flower stems, not the main stem, they longer had the strength to hold the flower petals after they're dry , they became droopy : (, any suggestion please? thanks
Hello, Pati! Thanks for the video! Please, would you know the species of these hydrangeas by any chance? My mom has tried, unsuccessfully, with a Brazilian kind (I guess), and she keeps saying the ones you used are "different". Thanks very much!
Hi enjoyed your video! How long to these flowers last after this process? What do you do with these after your done? Can they be used for flower arrangements, wreaths?
I have a vase of dried hydrangeas that have been on my breakfast room table for over ten years and they look perfect still........they dried a light blue and they are still that color.... I also have dried magnolia leaves stuffed in the same vase that are years old, too...they dried a gold color and perfect with the hydrangeas.
a question. when you dye your flowers you do it when they are freshly cut ( before placing them in boiling water) or dye it once two weeks have passed once boiled in water ? Your video has really found it useful. thank you very much
Hi Lydia and thank you. I place the fresh cut flowers in boiling water to force air bubbles up into the stems which then helps them dry out without wilting. I wait for about a week or two until I dye them. It's amazing how pretty they look! :) Patti
+Briana Sue Hello Briana, and thank you. The actual petals can be delicate so I like to spray them with cheap hair spray like Aqua net to add a little strength to them. Glad this helped you. :) Patti
Hi Patti. Thank you for the video! I want to dry my hydrangeas as well. I used the boiling stem method as you. I additionally cut a slit up the stem, will that be okay? And I places the flowers in a vase of water with flowers food power they give us at the flower shop. Will that be okay or should I just use normal water. Also, do I need to switch out the water every 3 days or so, or just let it sit in water until the water in the vase competent dries out. I filled my vase half way. Thank you so much!
+Carrie Lonsdale Hi Carrie, I have never used glycerin but I just did this again this past summer's end and I left the hydrangeas in the vase with the water (after I cut them, put them in boiling water for 30 seconds-then put them in a vase with hot water, and I added water every other day for about 6 days (a week) I noticed that by the second week, the flowers were all dry and very pretty! I'm going to dye them red, I've already finished some and use them for Christmas decorating with tiny white lights. Carrie, there is a video I saw on youtube where the women went on and on about all the uses of glycerin. I didn't watch the whole thing but as a crafter I probably should. You may want to look it up on here and see if it has any interesting tips for you too. :) Patti
U Have amazing video. Thanks for upload. May i know, what color u use it? is it normal color for flower? And this only for Hydrangeas? How about rose? or other flower? we use this step as well?
Hello Azelan, and thank you. I used the Ritt Dye colors on these but I have not tried to use it on Roses or other flowers. It is a normal color for some hydrangeas, like pink or Nikko blue, but the dark blue or green is not a "natural" hydrangea color. :) Patti
Hi Pati. Thanks for your lovely videos. I have come up to the stage of drying the hydrangeas. After two weeks I removed them out of water. But they are not loosing colours. Still retaining the original colour. Are they supposed to totally loose their original colour before I could dye them?
Hi! Thank you for your kind words. I'm guessing you are in the UK? I would love it if my hydrangea's kept thier color! Mine turn this very soft pale green or a color like aged parchment paper. You can still dye them but the colors will look different. If you have green hydrangea's and you add blue dye, you'll probably get a lovely color albeit different from what you expected. I will say that I had a lot of trouble getting a true pink hydrangea since they dried darker-when I added a pink dye, they came out closer to a burgundy color. I wanted pink. I'm wondering if you have a different type of hydrangea? Could you let me know how they turn out? I'm curious. I'll bet they still look lovely though. I just cut down a new batch myself. :) Patti
Hi thanks. Yes I'm in the UK. They were pink to begin with but have developed a purple colour now. I want to dye them marine blue but don't know what colour will I get.
they sound beautiful. I'm not sure what color you will get either really. I looked all over for a "white" rit dye but I'm told that there is no white dye, just something to remove colors, but that didn't work on my hydrangeas. Would you let me know how it turns out for you? I could look at Hydrangea's all day. :) Patti
+Donna Meade Hi Tia, (who is Donna?-I'm sorry I keep calling you Donna ) I have not tried the food coloring but if you do would you let me know? I am curious about that myself. Thank you! Patti
Idroid Howard rangers every year I have glorious purples and pinks I get him at the end of the season when they will dry but then they get so fragile afterwards I have to make a Reese when they're fresh. They're beautiful and I put silk flowers in them how do you keep them from getting crumbly after their dry?

Do you spray then with hairspray after coloring them? Thanks in advance
Have you tried just placing the prepared stems into dye water and let them suck the colored water up and let the water evaporate on its own?
Did you dry them for two weeks before you died them
Fantastic and lovely! Can u use the dye for artificial flowers? Again really lovely!
Are they last more than 1 year?

I tried in roses before with food coloring and its work ☺
do you spray hydrangea with hair spray? mine wilted
Hi Danielle, I have never had that happen unless I didn't let them completely dry. They have to be crispy dry before you spray them.
Danielle Giese
while dyeing how much vinegar we have to add
Hi Smitha,
When I say to add a splash of vinegar that usually means like a teaspoon or so. It's not a specific amount.
thanks for watching!
Patti
Tenho certeza que é um ótimo vídeo!Mas não sei como traduzir pra português. Que pena!!!!!!
Thanks for the instructions, although you do not show and do not mention what is the coloring tha you are using.
+Lorena Vargas I do, I mention it at 3 minutes into the video. :) It's Rit Dye.
