China is India's biggest security challenge, but also its biggest business partner.
In 2020, tensions erupted at the India-China border, forcing New Delhi to impose trade restrictions on Chinese companies. But, despite India's efforts to reduce its dependence, India still remains hooked on Chinese imports.
In the last financial year, China made a return as India's biggest trading partner.
More reports indicate that India is reviewing its visa policies to facilitate faster approvals for Chinese talent.
On this edition of Vantage, Palki Sharma takes a closer look at India's import dependencies on China, and how New Delhi could make a pivot.

There are millions of Indian jobs reliant on robust trade with China. China is your neighbour, not going anywhere, it’s better to seek ways to accommodate and live with China 🇨🇳.
IPhone factories in India are Taiwanese firms. They rely on technical staff from China to install and maintain the sophisticated equipments and to guide the Indian operators.
Some heavy Indian machinery such as tunnelling machines are imported from China, Chinese engineers have to train Indian engineers to operate the complicated machines.
Without Chinese visas many projects would stop.
We always heard China is going to in-vade Taiwan etc, but there are hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese work in China, own Chinese firms. No visa restriction from both sides.
They are also expert in tunnel boring. Most of Tunnelling for Metro rail project is done with the help of Chinese TBMs and Chinese technicians only.
We are always but it doesn't help when China backstabs and does not honor the agreement done with India. It keeps bulling it's neighbours not only india but all it has disputes with each one of them

The US is overestimating its relationship with Vietnam ignoring the fact that Vietnam is a strong ally of Russia. Just look at all the UN votings. Vietnam has always voted in favour of Russia or abstained, not against. The US is also underestimating Vietnam's relationship with China ignoring the fact the close relationship between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Communist Party of China.

India needs to be strategic and should focus more on developing its own industries in collaboration with the more advanced Chinese industry rather than creating trade barriers that are counter-productive to both sides. It is not practical to cut off Chinese imports. There should be some path to reducing this dependency over a period of time. Indian industry should have incentives and disincentives to look elsewhere. We should be able to cut off completely if there is a strategic or tactical need.
