    This is great. I got the Scout the other day and although I”ve dabbled in helicopters in MSFS and DCS for years I”m determined to learn to fly them properly. So yes, perfect timing.

      4 hours later …. I am blown away. I followed your advice, sat at LRBS in my Scout and just relaxed, got a picture, made sure my pedals worked well and within an hour I was SO much better. Open DCS, load the Huey - same, the Apache - same. Love it!

    Thank you! Great video...I am sick and tired of Simmers trash talking MSFS Helicopters...I fly real ones (for years) and I find these actually very fun to fly and in most cases easy to fly. Helicopters are not exact by any means...but either are fixwing. NONE are perfect. I hope that most simmers will continue to use "training wheels" if need be, to keep flying them. Nothing wrong with assist.
    Once it become to easy, take the Training wheels off and go for it.

      Yes! Nothing makes me happier than to hear a simmer say they've decided to give the helis another shot. Once they get in, it's hard to get out!

    You're doing great man! Awesome progress. I love these things because they require your full engagement. You can sightsee, but you gotta pay attention to the machine. You can't just enjoy the scenery like you're on a train, YOU GOTTA PILOT! And you're doing a great job.

    You're doing amazing! I've myself have recently got back into helis in the sim.
    Yup, it's those last 6 inches that's a pain. If you anticipate it - come down into it and don't raise the collective, albeit your rate of decent is fine - then it's much easier. Then let the collective down smoothly but surely.
    Can't wait to see you try with wind. It seems like the heli has a mind of its own. I get the whole loss of tail effectiveness thing but I think the *sim* flight model is off. Would love to see how it behaves with your controls.
    But man the r22 is so satisfying once you have it down to a T.
    Best of luck with the challange!

    This was a great tutorial, Nick! Actually one of the best I've seen so far. You should do this more. I think it's a great mix of frustration and joy flying helicopters in the sim.😅 I have flown without assists, using my old trusty joystick and throttle, for a while and getting a little better. But I still struggle a lot, especially in real weather. I think so far the most challenging heli is the 500E. It's all over the place.😂 So i find the Scout/Wasp great, and the G2 is also nice for beginners.

    • @MSFSFlightPlans
      @MSFSFlightPlans  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree, the 500 is extremely difficult without the assists. Mine seems to have a tendency to move to the right now, no matter how much I trim it out. Wasn't a problem with the assists on.

      @MSFSFlightPlans .. actually most helis do that to a certain extent, just because the tail rotor pushes the air sideways.

    My first chopper was the cowan 500e with no assists. I didn't realize how much of a masochist I was until I tried other helicopters. The allouette is the chillest helicopter I've flown so far, but set the parking brake to not roll all over the place. I actually increased the sensitivity from the default contrary to most tips, but I have a long extension on my stick. Here's the biggest thing, by default the roll is way less sensitive than the pitch. What I did was adjust my curves watching stick motion in game until it matched my physical stick. That's what made it click for me.
    LA is a great place to practice as most of the skyscrapers have a pad. My favorite helicopter practice is the amphibious ready group ships from militech. There are three moving ships traveling together you can fly around and land on.
    That saying that there are no natural born helicopters is so true. The controls are so counterintuitive. Have fun practicing, assists on will feel so wrong in no time.

    Enjoyed your video, very useful but also very encouraging and reassuring. I have been flying helicopters pretty seriously since msfs started implementing them and even though I have flown without assist right from the start, I still am no better than you. I have every helicopter that has ever been on sale (lol) and am having a blast. I find by far the easiest is the Chinook. It just lifts up straight without any torque. Same goes for the Airbus H135, not sure if that is correct, but it is such a modern machine that it may have assist in real life, no idea....
    And the hardest one is the Schweizer...lol
    Anyway - enough babbling, keep up the good work 😊

      Where would you put the Wasp/Scout? It felt super easy when we flew it up over northern Spain, albeit with the assists on ... despite that, it still felt pretty easy vs a lot of the others. As you can imagine, I've been sampling all the other choppers without the assists now that I can at least move around in them. I fell like the 500 is the most difficult in my hangar so far.

    • @normg2242
      @normg2242 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @MSFSFlightPlans ... I agree on the 500, it is very twitchy and takes a lot of practice, it sure makes me sweat a lot...lol
      The Wasp/Scout I find to be one of the easier ones, it is quite well behaved, but not as "arcade-like" as the Airbus or Chinook. It is probably one of the most rewarding helis to learn on.

    This is really helpful. Would you consider a group “lesson” with voice chat? I’ve started weaning off the assists too, using a flight stick, pedals and a throttle quadrant and am confused about throttle/collective. I’ve been using just the throttle lever but want to do it correctly. Thanks for sharing this!

    20 ft is Hovering in the deadman zone.. try hovering at 3 or 4 feet thats where you will hover and taxi in a real chopper

    • @MSFSFlightPlans
      @MSFSFlightPlans  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, now that I've watched a lot more people doing it on real life, I can see they are doing it pretty close to the ground. The problem I'm having (at this stage) is preventing it from falling to the ground if I lose control in the hover. The extra few feet is usually enough to give me time to stabilize again before I hit the ground
