    The Vankookz Van Conversion Masterclass is Finally Here! - www.vankookz.com/vankookz-van...
    Welcome back to the channel ya kookz!
    Today we are test driving and comparing the 2020 Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 Van to the 2020 Ford Transit AWD Van. We have some interested buyers in our vans so we wanted to see what the market looks like for new vans. We know we want our next rig to be either a 4x4 or AWD vehicle so we checked out the only two vans on the market with these options.
    We headed to the local dealerships to test drive what they had. Unfortunately the Ford dealership only had a short top work van in AWD but we still took it for a spin to see how it drives.
    WIll we buy a new van? Well you'll have to subscribe to find out! Also don't forget to turn on notifications.

    I work for Fedex and drove the same Sprinter for 8 years. The only reason we retired it was because it was Kamakazed by a Prius. It was a tank. I probably started it 50 times a day and never replaced the starter! Outside of brakes and oil changes it never needed much. It had almost 500,000 miles on it. RIP my old van!!

    I went through the same decision making process and settled on the Ford for two reasons. First, there are Ford dealerships everywhere so roadside repairs and service is a non-issue. The drivetrain is near enough to that of a F150. I live in Nebraska and there is only one Sprinter service dealership in the entire state. I'm sure non-dealers could help in a pinch but it's not ideal. Second, the 3.5 Ecoboost motor is a real screamer. So much power! I can put it on cruise control while towing a 4,000 pound trailer and it will drop one gear and hold 70 mph all the way to Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado with no effort at all. The Sprinter looks better but the Ford made more sense for me.

    • @Vankookz
      @Vankookz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is very true. However we have a MB Sprinter with 215k miles and we rarely have issues I feel like around this mileage the gas ford engine would start to have problems.

    • @onionhead5780
      @onionhead5780 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I with you on getting the Ford and I did my research. Ford has less expensive service fees and it’s $100 cheaper for an oil change on a Ford. I used to do them myself when I was younger and penniless but it’s not worth the aggravation now. Too hard to dispose of the old oil.

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Totally agree. Now that the Transit has the intelligent AWD system with the powerful Ecoboost engine and still cost many $1000s less than the Sprinter, it's the no-brainer choice in my opinion. Having plenty of service centers and fuel stations available are bigger issues than most people think, especially for a full time RV build. A long wheelbase AWD Transit 350 will definitely be the base for my upcoming build.

  • @Scrambler85
    @Scrambler85 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I was going to build out a AWD transit extended length high roof. So I priced one with almost every option. Then I priced one with a lot less options. The fully loaded one was over $500 cheaper than the less loaded one because of package discounts. I eventually ordered a 2021 E350 because I needed a higher towing capacity. Plus a 7' X 14' box with square walls. Cheaper, faster and easier to build. And for the price difference I can always get it converted to real 4x4. I always enjoy your work and videos.

      I have been doing extensive research on the topic. In conclusion there are two things that the Mercedez holds over the transit and that is the MB has 4x4 and a diesel engine. But the price makes it almost double the price of the Ford Transit or the other popular van life model being the Ram Promaster. Also, if you get the Ecoboost transit which is a twin turbo V6 it has a equal punch to that of the Sprinter.

    • @theginjaninja3606
      @theginjaninja3606 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And with the money you save getting the Transit or the Promaster can be put more towards the layout of the inside and allow for nicer "home" upgrades instead of the nicer van.

    I'm waiting for one of the large truck review sites to compare the capabilities of both the MB 4x4 vs Transit AWD on a controlled test track. Although there is lots to like on the 4x4 MB, I do like the option of going with the aftermarket 4x4 upgraded system by companies like Quigley/Quadvan. Hard to argue with the cost of ownership between these two vans. Also, if you plan to stay domestic, the amount of repair shops that can work on the transit dwarfs MB in the US. Ultimately, I can't wait till the electric Transit/MB comes to market. I've read the two most expensive costs associated with long term overland trips are 1. Fuel and 2. Food. Just gotta figure out where to recharge. Great video, once again!

I’m a diesel guy at heart but there is so much complexity with new diesel emissions and diesel in general (egr cooler, egr valve, expensive common rail injectors, scr, dpf, expensive fuel filters, algae issues with diesel, fuel gelling when cold, diesel about .50 cent a gallon more than gas here right now, crappy heat out a diesel until they warm up which takes a while (I’ve owned 8 diesel pickups....) the ecoboost has 400lb torque at a usable rpm and pulls like a scalded dog. I’m thinking of upgrading to an AWD Transit from my 2WD Transit. After a trip up to Tuktoyaktuk, and 30,000miles in a year, I would highly recommend the Transit van. The other thing is there’s a better dealer network for Fords and as a certified mechanic, I’m looking at the repairability of a vehicle before I purchase it. I think Ford does that better too. The other thing that’s a killer for me when it comes to the sprinter, is that the 4x4 Low range is hardly lower then if you get a transit van with the 4.10 rear differential. I put the 4.10 in my van and it cruises nicely on the highway, but it climbs the hills even better because of the better torque from the rear differential. On my trip up north, I averaged 20mpg which is very decent and that’s with the old 3.7 naturally aspirated engine and the 6 speed auto. I imagine with fords newer 3.5 PFDI engine, the Ten speed and even with AWD, you will see similar numbers with the 4.10 differentials. 4.10’s also make a huge difference in fuel economy when the van is loaded with your house. Anyways, that’s my 2 cents! Love the Ford transit, but I also love the sprinter, for my needs, the transit was what fit the bill.

    I test drove a 2020 Transit with the 8” screen and 360 cameras and it was very well done. Fords SYNC 3 is one of the best, plus CarPlay. But I’m thinking about getting a 2019 New. It doesn’t have as much tech, but you can’t get a really sweet android radio for the dash that is 10”, you can get a 2019 loaded for only $35 brand new. Pretty great deal for practically the same van plus the 6 speed is tried and true on the 19

    I’ve been driving sprinters and transits for years as an RV exec. They are both fantastic vans. The driving experience in the ford transit (if it has the eco boost) is very comfortable. It’s as if you’re driving a crossover suv. Ford really nailed the seat and the steering wheel ergonomics. The Sprinter definitely has more of a truck feel to it. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. A lot of people prefer that sort of ride. The sprinter is definitely a higher seated position as well. And hearing that Mercedes turbo diesel is awesome. When you price out it out they are both in the 60k price range if you option for the AWD or 4X4 with the heavy duty suspension.
    If you are considering buying a new van to convert you should consider getting the heavy duty package with dullies. The stability they offer when you’re van is fully loaded down is very satisfying. It’s also gonna make the vehicle ride better for longer.

If you prefer 4x4 , want a higher ride height, air ride seats, heavy duty frame and a beautiful ride Benz is the way to go. Mercedes maintenance and repairs are NOT for the weak and definitely will get your attention. That is the trade off.

    Thx for video, though fully loaded Transit would have been a better apples to apples comparison. Main factors for which to buy are Cost (purchase price/maintenance), AWD vs 4WD, Power. Cost, Transit wins by $10,000-$15,000 or more. Ford's advanced AWD is far safer and practical on paved roads and highway, yet usable off road too. Mercedes 4WD is superior off road and useable on road under 50 mph, but arguably unsafe at highway speeds. Power, no contest as Ford has the 3.5 EcoBoost Twin Turbo beast of a motor. Put a tune on it for less than $1,000 and get another 50-100 HP.
    My choice would be a high roof, medium length, AWD Transit, fully loaded, with aluminum wheels (powder coat gloss black), black leather, 10 passenger version, with a 2 inch lift beefier suspension kit, off road tires, front and rear bumper guards, to convert with modular kitchen, shower, rear dining/sleep shelf, with rear water on one side and power on the other (rear wheel well area) and wall cabinets, where I can switch the van from cargo, passenger, to RV, at my leisure. Storyteller Vans and Outside Vans have the right idea, just more modular capabilities are needed.
    Though I do like the brand and looks of the Mercedes over the Transit, yet the Ford wins on the price, road capability of AWD, and power. 😉👍

    Been thinking about sprinter for a lonnng long time. IMHO, the allure of the sprinter is a hype that been born out of social media . You have sprinter your cooler , and your more hip. Most decked out ones are owned by people with alot of money. What about reality though? , after alot of " practical reviews" sprinter scares me . Most people will NOT put tons of miles on these engines, so diesel is a lost economy. Not to mention if your buying" new"your telling me can't you afford gasoline economy?
    Now the transit arrives , I don't like it as much I think it's "looks " aren't there , that how much the sprinter vibe has biased me. But with Transit there goes ALL the fears that comes with possible sprinter ownership . I drive a Chevy Uplander full of camping, outdoor and SUP gear. Doesn't owe me a dime.
    As to transit or sprinter I believe The Choice is clear.

      Yeah... We know the Ford dealership lied when they told us they had AWD transits fully loaded. Instead they had someone's work van that they accidentally let us drive. The salesman got reamed in front of us. The professionalism from Mercedes to Ford is comparable as well as the vans. The sprinter is the king of the cargo vans.

    Apples and Oranges comparisons, Diesel is much more expensive than Gas, shorter van vs Longer van. The Sprinter requires service every 20,000 miles or once a year. Resale is much better in Sprinter. Check out total cost of operations www.mbvans.com/sprinter/shopping-tools/cost-operation
    The standard powertrain warranty on Mercedes is 5 years 100,000 miles, 3 years 36,000 mile on the rest of the van, what they are talking about is a extended warranty to make it all 5 years 100,000 miles

      Just ran a comparison between the Mercedes 170 diesel and Ford HR 148 el the Mercedes cost .54 a mile to own the Ford cost .57 a mile. Ford is cheaper up front but more for maintenance, insurance, fuel and depreciation. I have a client that has 10 vans, he got 400k miles out of his Sprinters before he replaced them with Fords. At 180k he has replaced 7 of the 10 transmissions, 2 engines, and he says he has paid for so many wheel bearings that he has lost count. It’s about total cost of ownership.

    I would go sprinter all the way. Reasons: 1-less maintenance. Maybe more expensive but less often.
    2- 4x4 on sprinter is really better than all wheel drive. You can literally lock the front and back drive train but also lock all 4 wheels together. If you think of going off-road it’s a must.

      That is a great selling point for off road, I took mine and wow it was unstoppable. For a regular camper or even a service truck like mine, AWD is good enough. My Benz with the 4x4 and air ride seats is very comfy though. It also has a heavier solid feeling over the Ford. Maintenance Sucks and so do the repairs on Benz

  • @bsellman6881

    Yes the Sprinter is all the Blitz in the pizzazz but the four will cost you weigh less in the long run to own even just for 5 years Beltway better smarter so you make a decision and there's $20,000 less sticker for basically the same platform even if you throw 5-6 grand at it, to personalize...in the end the American Benz is Shite friends, sorry wouldn't own a MB product in America period!

    • @Vankookz
      @Vankookz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have a 2008 sprinter with 213K miles on it and have had it for almost 4 years now. We've had some work done but in the end its just a little bit more expensive on the maintenance end. But gas savings are triple most other vans so it ends up balancing out pretty good.

    Lousy comparison on the 2 vans. Mercedes only offers a diesel on the 4x4 vans. Also the body panels and possibly frame are galvanized on the Mercedes and I don't think this the case on the Ford.when an owner lives in the rust belt that's a big deal. Mercedes also has a much better lease options which makes it more attractive for most owners that are concerned about monthly payments.

    I own a Sprinter 2008 with 422,000 miles on it.
    Diesel nowadays is a BIG NO.
    EGR, DPF, DEF... it is something many people doesn't know how fu!$÷ expensive it is until they have to pay for it.
    We are in America. Gas price is super cheap... Buy anything that has a Gas powered engine and timing CHAIN instead timing belt.
    Buying a 4x4 or AWD is stupid. You don't want to do off road with your complete house behind you. Just get a bicycle rack and 2 bikes.

    • @Vankookz
      @Vankookz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Danm 422,000! That’s awesome we have a 2007 with 210,000 miles on it and just upgraded it.
      Yeah we agree on 4x4 but sometimes we wish our van was 4x4 when it come to steep lose dirt, snow, mud, and sand. Yeah ours has had quite a few repairs but we take good care of her.

      Good point. The dealership lied and told us they has fully loaded AWD transits so we drove an hour+ to the stealership and they lied and we drove a customers work truck. The young cocky Ford salesman was reamed right in front of us. The experience at Merc was so much better too bad it was $60K+

    I own a fleet of 32 vans mix of MBZ & Transits.
    MBZ cons
    Turning Radius sucks
    Lower headroom than HR transit
    Diesel DPF reliability
    Low takeoff power
    Transit cons
    5 cyl diesel sucks too many recalls
    Fuel mileage sucks on Gas engines
    Test drive transit 148” WB Extended Dually HR 3.5 eco boost. You will not regret that!!
    Ford is much cheaper in the long run, with 10 times bigger dealership network if you plan to travel; Mercedes parts are always on back order & most dealers are more focused on cars & SUV’s.
    My sprinters get the redhead stepchild treatment when it goes into service.
    Ford dealerships are very well equipped as most police cruisers ambulances f150 utilizing similar platform as transit.
    I get my vans back faster with less parts issues.

      @@Vankookz I need to start test driving. I'm just afraid of all the wasted time these dealerships will put me through. I don't want to buy until December. I'm still up in the air between Sprinter and Transit, but those AWD Transits seem like a lot lower cost and headache.
