    I remember you saying before that you were going to slow down on the installs to make sure your hair was good. Don’t sacrifice your hair for our entertainment. Yes you have to take care of your hair, but as crochet wearers, we also experience breakage and other issues just like you, don't apologize for being a real person with real issues like the rest of us. Yes see what the professional has to say and share some tips with us please. We like natural hair care tips as well, you don't just have to do crochet, we will still follow you 😊

    I had two installs of Freetress Bohemian curl for the Summer. My edges were already thin so I instructed my installer to leave my edges out and I'll just sleek them down with edge control. During this time I used Mielle rosemary mint growth on my edges and scalp. After I took my crotchet out I went to my hairstylist to wash and treat my hair and she said the installer did a wonderful job because she didn't see any breakage and my edges grew back tremendously.

    • @aj25055

      Yes. I leave my whole perimeter out in the front now. I’m going to use that Mielle this time around too.

      I’m sitting here with crochet style in now and my installer put small pieces around the edges. Now how am I going to get these out they are so small.

    Sorry for this long comment.....I've been getting my hair braided for 20+ years. You're probably right, it's breakage. I get my crochets done professionally. They ALWAYS braid in straight hair with the cornrows. That takes stress off your natural hair. Synthetic hair is extruded plastic, which could cut natural hair, especially when you take it down. Don't take your hair down dry. Cut out the crochet hair then thoroughly wet your hair & use a lot of cheap conditioner. Make your hair slippery as possible. I use V05 from Dollar Tree & put on a plastic cap for at least an hour. Then take the cornrows out carefully. Do your normal wash and conditioning regimen after that. But the most important thing is, ALWAYS wash the hair (human or synthetic) before putting it in your head. You know just about everything is made overseas and shipped to this country via container ship. Part of the manufacturing process includes spraying chemicals on items to stop mildew, bugs, rodents, or whatever during the long overseas trip. Wash your wigs & extensions (& your clothes) before use.

    It eventually takes a toll on your edges, especially if you’re using mostly synthetic hair. The hair around our edges are finer and does not hold moisture as the rest of the hair. Therefore it needs to be moisturized daily to keep it from dying out and breaking.

    • @LiaLavon
      @LiaLavon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Very true. Hopefully I’m catching the issue before the true toll sets in. Love giving my hair actual time to breathe.

    • @israeliana
      @israeliana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Also sometimes leave the edge control out. Don't weigh down your hair bc the breakage is probably from lack of moisture, which can't be done when gel is there. Sometimes your hair gets tired

    I found out that this one specific crochet hair was causing breakage in the same area you were seeing it. I used it, and my edges began falling out. I took a break from crochet, got my edges back on track, and then came back to it with a different hair and was fine. A few styles later I came back to that hair. ( I really liked the hair) and the same thing occurred 😔

    Please do what you have to do for your hair! I appreciate your content, period. My edges were popping out and I started installing my knots a little further back on the braid where the hair could take more weight. When you’re ready to jump back to crochet, that may be something worth trying.

    It's the same as putting your hair in the same ponytail style for 5 years...You will experience perimeter breakage over time....You should also soak the crochet hair in ACV, then shampoo and condition the hair prior to application....The chemicals they're putting on the hair now also causes allergic reactions....My FINAL observation(based solely on MY experience) is that you should also get a medical check up because when I suddenly lost my edges last year it turned out to be a thyroid dysfunction, Graves Disease.....I PRAY that isn't the case❤

    I used to have problem with my edges until I started using castor oil and I do individual around the the edges and then braid back. That stopped my edges from being damaged. My issue now is breakage due to dryness of my hair on the rest of my hair . I love crochet braids and when I find a solution I will hair. Thanks for your content. I’ve been wearing crochets since the 90s and I didn’t have a problem until 2015 and I stopped wearing them. My mom has had the same issue starting in 2018. Girrrrlll!! I’m still trying to grow my edges back. My mom lost all her hair and I just got her hair back to normal. I think it’s the hair. That’s why I braid my edges individually and crochet the back now. Also you have to look at the older we get the softer our hair get and can’t hold hair that is heavy. Just my opinion.

  • @extremelyblessed67
    @extremelyblessed67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I was hoping it was actually something else going on, but as I said before, based on my personal experience, I do believe it is breakage. Just like you, I prided myself on taking care of my natural hair. But unlike you, I was not able to do my own hair, so I always had my hair professionally install (and yes, she was very proud of her work and the 💰reflected just how proud). Still, after a while, breakage did happen. The fact that my hair was/is colored, didn't help either. Thankfully, after growth oils, many deep conditions, annnnnnd rotating different hairstyles, they have grown back. Take care of your hair and do what you need to do. Your "LIA LOVELIES" will continue to be here to support you thru whatever breaks you need to take from crochet and with whatever content you produce.
    On another note, my daughter said I am 🤩🤩star-struck🤩🤩. When I saw my comment pop up and as you began to read it, I literally screamed!!! My husband, my daughter, and my dog, all ran to see what was wrong lol. All I could do was point and say, "She picked my comment." You are absolutely one of my favorite influencers! In this day and age, it's hard to know who you can trust, but we know we can trust that you are providing us with the best information you possibly can. (Even my husband even showed me an article he read that talked about how trustworthy your content is...and yes, he recognized your name ☺.) Be Blessed and sorry for the long comment.😘💕

    Great video. I love the look of crochet braids and have tried many different hairs based on your recommendations. But, I had the same issue as you and therefore starting wearing headband wigs instead. My hair is now flourishing. When crochet braids stop being a "protective style" and start to harm your hair, it's time to take a break.

    Im about to start a crochet journey, i need to just stop braiding soooo much. although im going to have some braids in order to install it,
    But,
    Im gonna use a cap , i will only crochet the cap & not my hair on the edges.
    Fentress has a wonderful cap with a 5 inch parting with a scalp like area.
    im not gonna braid my edges, only crochet the cap around my edges.
    Also i will sew the cap down.
    Im gonna try this for a year,
    I've braided my hair down for wigs & im sure i was pulling way to tight.
    Now its time for a edge break.
    When you get time, check out that cap.
    You might like it.
    Thank you so much for all that you do to keep us informed with up to date & brand new crochet hair that hits the market.
    Your hair will grow back , black jamaican hair oil around the edges will help tremendously.
    Thanks again

    Thank you for discussing this. I constantly wore crochet for two years. I didn’t listen to my gut when I knew my braids were being installed too tight and the tightness of the crochet hair being installed even tighter on top of that wasn’t good. My edges suffered and broke off. Since my stylist didn’t listen to my concerns of the installs being too tight, I had to let her go as my stylist. I still wear protective styles now but with braids and new stylist. My new stylist understands the importance of not doing my braids tight and I can even sleep peacefully on the first night of having my braids installed. My edges are growing back and I wish I would’ve made this change sooner.

    Hi Lia, Love your videos! I've been a subbie since you started. I understand your concern that it's not the cornrows styles. I'm not sure of someone mentioned this or not, and I don't know if you wouldn't feel comfortable with his or not. But, as someone who cannot cornrow, I was glad to see videos of how to do crochet styles w/out cornrows. Also, I knew it was the tension and weight of the crochet hair, along with edge control that caused my edges to thin. So I did a style where I had about 6 to nine plats and sewed them down. I installed the hair and there was no tension on my edges. Even thought I used gel and edge control on my parted side, there was no tension because there was no crochet hair pulling or weighing down my edges. This method helped my edges grow back and thicken up. But I do agree about taking some breaks. Your natural hair is beautiful and it looks so healthy! 😍 I love all your videos and look forward to all conten, whether it's crochet videos, day in the life vlogs,.etc. Your personality is so refreshing and your sophistication and class continue to be so welcoming. I have done hair, so I only do any braids for 2-3 weeks. Then I take 1-2 weeks off. If I go back into protective style it has to be a different braid pattern.

    My hair looks like that too and I've only had crochet braids in twice this year. My crochet braid fell out 1 and that piece hair u were holding up is exactly how my hair looks right now. So i took out my last crochet style after 3 weeks. And all my cornrows in the back are loose and one in the front was. Once my hair was exposed in the front i was done. But my situation is somewhat different I always get mine done at the beauty school and b4 by a professional. But i agree with the previous comments that you should take care of your hair too. I love your channel. I'll. Will always watch. I also lile your flexi rod video. 😍

    Your videos years ago really helped me during a time where I was literally pulling my hair out as a stress coping mechanism, so if I experienced some breakage it wasn't anything in comparison to what I was doing. I only wore crochet for 1.5 years or so, maybe two, but I have been wearing consistently out since. I can't imagine the sacrifice you're making wearing crochet all the time. The hair itself causes friction I think. We sleep in silk bonnets or on silk pillows, butt he hair is synthetic and textured.

    TFS! Appreciate the honesty! I like ALL your content so do what you need to for the health of your hair. Question-Do you regularly moisturize and oil your hair and scalp including your edges while you have your styles in? I know from watching your vids that you wash your scalp and hair at times during your crochet wear. Also try scalp massages including your edges during wear. Another comment mentioned adding braiding hair to your hair when braiding for an install. That may help too. Sometimes I do braidless crochet-I take twists that were in from wash day and combine them or leave loose and put a netted crochet cap on top then install. That can offer a break from the stress of braiding then installing on top of that. I hope the issue resolves soon.🙂

    Even though I’m in crochet now knotless box braids been my to go for the last 2 years. My edges are fine but the hot water dipping has been tearing my ends and length all the way up! I’m gonna switch to sew-ins for a few month and focus on moisture retention with some good products. I swear type 4 hair is so fragile!

    I recommend an oil mix consisting of castor, peppermint, jojoba , and olive oil( or avocado), infused with funugreek seeds and amla powder. It may sound excessive and it did to me at first too whenever I was looking to remedy similar issues. But other low manipulation styles along with using this oil mix on my scalp+ ends after a spritz of water changed my life. This will give you so much shine and strength! It’s also not hard to make. Good luck!

    Humm sometime when I get my crochet styles installed the stylist uses a very small amount of regular braiding hair or even weaving string when braiding down my hair so the crochet hair can anchor on the actual braids better aiding in less slippage especially for ppl that have softer finer hair. But I think you’re correct sometimes breaks in hairstyle and techniques are necessary. Good review Lia!

    Whichever style I do I always try to take 2/3 week breaks in between (usually wearing wigs), otherwise I get some breakage after a while. My edges have always been quite fragile too so I also avoid using edge control unless they are looking extra crazy lol. And if I ever notice any thinning then a bit of TLC with jbc oil has always done the trick. Best of luck with restoring those edges girl

    I'm dealing with a bit of front hairline damage from back to back crochet locs. Taking a break from all long term styles. No individual braids, no crochet, barely any wigs (glueless only). I'd deep conditioning with steam, massaging my scalp with tea tree and hemp oil, and did a good trim. No more protective styles until at least July.

    Great video Lia. I haven't crocheted my hair in over a year due to working from home. I recently purchased the BoHo twists you had in and have yet to install them because 1) I'm still working from home; 2) lazy to install myself 3) toying with having someone else install but don't want to pay the $$$$s and trying to protect my edges because some braiders are too rough on the edges

    The breakage is most likely from too much weight on your hair. Try adding a little braiding hair to the braids, just enough to add more structure and strength to them. Also, don't pull too tight when installing hair near the edges (or anywhere, really).

Just switch it up and more tlc and you'll reap the rewards from it.

    I use a single braid that starts at my left ear, goes around my parting area, and comes down the right side to my ear. I find that stronger to support the crochet at my edges and left hair exposed to have to gel down. When I used to go cornrows, my installs never lasted as long because I was concerned about the health of my edges.

    I remember a few years ago you had a similar issue but it was your hair not growing due to putting crocet in back to back to keep the content going and you took a break. I love all your videos. Thank you for bringing such valuable content.
    It seems like you are forgetting a few things.
    1) you say that after 5 years you don’t believe it could be certain things. There are people who eat the same thing for years then all of a sudden they become allergic to said food. It’s far more common than you may think
    2) the female body goes through various changes. It could be age, sheer repetitiveness, your diet, your physical & mental health, change in lifestyle etc.
    My point is don’t be too quick to dismiss anything. Having said this I do believe it’s breakage and it doesn’t have to be due to one thing but a combination of factors.
    Im definitely interested to see where this all leads. Wishing you the best ❤

    Hey Lia. Lady, I have appreciated your videos now for 6 months and going. Happy I found you. You gave me the courage to try some new styles AND install them myself. I've been natural for 7 years and only started protective styling this year. After 3 professional attempts, I've done 4 installs myself. YaY me. :) Stylist were costly and I uninstalled $300+ styles within 1 week on 2 separate occasions. 1 was due to the style - didn't like. The 2nd was because the installed hair was super abrasive and all I could think of was possible damage to my natural hair. Which is where I'm going with this. Have you considered the abrasiveness of some hairs? I know you often mention roughness in your reviews, but I wonder if the rougher textures are causing the damage. Perhaps take a moment to keep hair health check records that include internal factors (stress, water intake, etc.) and external factors (weather, install techniques and certainly the type of hair used. Just a suggestion. But either way do what's best for LiaLavon and HAPPY HAIR! I’ll stay tuned in. 😊

    Never thought I'd leave a comment for my YT crochet hair plug, but here's my two cents - breakage comes from dryness (lack of moisture). You may want to check the alcohol content of your edge control products. And always moisturize your edges before putting on products to slick it down/back and before going to bed with scarves/bonnets.

    I had to stop crochet because of the same issue. My hair grew a lot but the front got thin and started breaking. This is with different braid patterns. I noticed it's the worst with anything requiring individuals like faux locs because of the tension. I have silky hair so that I'm sure doesn't help out.

    Your scalp / hair might just need a break from Crochet braids. My sister used to get it done alot but she experienced breakage around her crown / hairline. I get breakage in that same/edges area and so I only do crochet 1, maybe 2 x per year. (And it's never braided tightly) During the last 2 years I didn't wear it at all, only rocked twist and my hair flourished. You ain't lying about it being expensive. My girl used to do it for free. Recently went to my stylist for vacation hair and it was $275 + hair. The cost is another reason why I choose not to do it often.
