Some say, Kitano's movies are underrated. Underrated by whom? A real artist in any art never creates anything for the sake of rating, money or fame, he just can't help creating what he is up to. He is like a transmitter of heavenly energy, so to say. He is not choosing what to create - there's just one way to do. So he doesn't need any sort of pity or compassion from anyone: he works because he can't avoid from doing so. The joy is in it itself. Inner sort. Who wins from noisy fame? Never anyone had any good from that, its just a habit to think this way. But one day it will go away. Having his part of attention from people, he got less troubles from them as well.
It is underrated because many people where he came from underestimated him because he is originally a comedian. Not a movie director especially action movies. But don't get me wrong this is masterpiece!
realistic? aniki choose to die and before he die, gave all the money to his black brother. it happen in real mafia/yakuza life? hell no. mafia/yakuza always cheating to each other. i like this movie but this movie is so unrealistic hahaha.

Sonatine stretches this concept so much the message becomes oniric. I hate "Brother", but I recognize that his stoic patriotic vision of japanese mafia over american "shimas" could seem like a tragicomical delirium, like a grotesque fantasy of him that goes beyond what is possible for a human being. It has some "herzogian" elements to it I guess, but that's what I add for myself on the interpretation. Overall, I think that's far from his good movies, like Hana-Bi or Sonatine, that are absolute masterpieces, and really shows the fragility and sensibility of the poetry of Kitano, when it comes to tell a narrative story like this... I don't know, it appears ridiculous to me, I don't understand what his point is, if there's one. He surely is a very, very peculiar storyteller, that's for sure

Mafia life is scary, as this movie so proves. The soundtrack alone is worth checking this one out, I highly recommend it(though there are a few violently suggestive parts)!
Only thing I didn't like about this movie is that this song was the emotional crescendo of the film, and right as it starts to hit that point in the song, *SPOILERS* Takeshi's character is gunned down by so many guns for soooo long and it's soooo loud that you can't even hear this song over it. Other than that, great film!

Criminally underrated Kitano movie, and the music kills as always.
