Great video. I ride a catrike 559 and a Trail.....mostly the 559 and I can climb any hill with the great gearing.I am 69 years old and in great shape and cruise 14-17 mph no sweat and can get it going 22-23 for, stretches. Recumbents are the best way to ride.

That’s a lot of watts being put down there. Well done, sir!

Bom trabalho! Uma subida difícil. Bons treinos e saudações aqui do Brasil

It's the rider who climbed that hill, not the P-38. Very few of us could climb that hill on any bike. Bravo!

I just bought a Catrike Villager and I absolutely Love it!! I'm just amazed how easy it is to climb up hills. I was shocked when I made it up first hill. Yeah..

Congratulations, this climb doesn't look easy, nice time!

Good effort mate , thats a fair old drag up there , it would be interesting to see how an electric assist recumbent would fare doing that hill , i dont think you would run too much assist as the motor would probably cook .

That shift gear is a must! With an upright bike, you can “cheat” by doing a standing pedal. With recumbents, you have to downshift your gears.

I like your gauges on the video.. Are these GoPro gauges..? I have the GoPro7 Black and mine don't look like this. Thanks and Cheers...R

What a grueling climb! By my calcs you climbed 181 meters from summit to peak in just 8 min, 44 sec. It takes 3.4 watt/kg to climb against one's own weight at that rate. Then add the weight of the bike, a tiny bit of aero drag and drivetrain losses, and you're probably pushing 4.5 watt/kg at the pedals.

I wonder if I could do 15% with my Bacchetta giro. I doubt it. 12% I was able to do but that's already tough. With my upright no problem also beyond 20%. With a recumbent it's different.

The so called "climbing problem" of recumbents is largely the result of overgearing. I rode a RANS Rocket in mountainous terrain for years and as geared at the factory the bike was hopeless. Lance Armstrong might have been able to climb a steep hill on it but I'd bet he would have had a tough time of it. Swap out the stock gearing for a standard Shimano 105 triple crankset and install an 11/34 rear cluster and it's problemo solved for most riders! Due to advanced age and cycling injuries I eventaully went one step further and swapped out the Shimano 105 for a Deore mountainbike crankset after which I could climb up the wall of my garage! As to those who will inevitable whine about "losing top end" with this sort of gearing I'd ask how often can you pedal fast enough to keep up with gravity on the downhills?

It is a 15 % grade, i would not be faster on an upright !

I think I just had a stroke watching the effort that took!! Where do the graphics come from??

Luca2007 the graphics are Garmin Edge data overlaid using Garmin Virb software.

I have a 2004 P38. Great bike especially if you are having issues on a DF. I'm only a liesure rider but I can appreciate the performance of this bike. I managed 22.5 mph on the flat and I'm 65 and not that fit. Cruised past a roadie. 🙂🙂

Thanks for sharing dude. How do you find Cruzbike? Is it able to climb as well?

It's a great climber on paper, since you can help your feet's effort with your arms steering the bike from side to side

    Yis!
I always think climbing should not be an issue. If there is, there should be a possible invention to overcome this. Standing on the pedal or not, the power are all coming from the rider, the gravity isn't helping.

Standing on the pedal give a momentary boost to the leg muscle. Feet up in the air starts out with a need of muscle to maintain the position. That's my impression of riding both ways.
Overall, I still prefer a recumbent.

Wow! Not so much the bike can climb... but YOU can!

all of them can climb if you have the legs.
