Many giant breeds like great danes and mastiffs are meant for protection offensively. Dogs like the leo and great Pyrenees are lazier giant breeds for defensive protection. All wary of strangers unless properly socialized and desensitized. Often both work together to protect flocks of sheep (ie great Pyrenees with Anatolian shepherd dog)

I’m so glad to hear about how you make sure your big guys don’t overheat. My sister had a dog (RIP Bear) years ago, he was a big boy. Mixed breed but double coated. She took him to a new groomer when she moved, and this lady left our poor Bear in a drying cage for HOURS in the middle of summer. She said she forgot about him. When my sister came to pick him up the groomer was surprised and then panicked. She ran to the drying cage and Bear was almost to the point of unconsciousness. He was rushed to the vet with heat exhaustion and thankfully he recovered. The groomer did pay his vet bill and was very upset and remorseful but it really didn’t help the situation much. He lived many years after that but they never trusted another groomer and got the de shedding supplies and just did it themselves after that.

    • @janesawyer3495
      @janesawyer3495 2 ปีที่แล้ว +89

@@DragynryderMW It's how they breed them. Inbreeding and line breeding have shortened the lifespans of many breeds.
An increase in the prevalence of inherited disorders
      A decrease in viability/ longevity
A decrease in reproductive ability (reduced fecundity, decreased litter sizes, etc.)
The loss of genetic diversity (i.e. decrease in genetic variation)
Studies in various species have shown that inbreeding can also result in:
      developmental disruption, higher infant mortality
a shorter life span and reduction of immune system function. And it is known that impaired immune function can lead to higher rates of cancer, and a myriad of other issues for skin, digestive, and other systems as well as resistance to infectious agents.

And they hat 11 puppies at once! They where soooo cute but gigantic. Bevor this dogs I was kind of afraid of dogs. But not since. They are really loveable. He was still alive after I moved out. I’m not sure about sharing this, but what the heck: it’s TH-cam, y’know! As a vet tech you’ve probably experienced many different breeds and mixes, so do you agree with me that larger breeds (Great Danes, Bernese Mtn. Dogs, etc.) are generally just better behaved than the small/toy/pocket ones? I’ve got a theory about this: so much of dog aggression/misbehavior is fear-driven, and the big breeds don’t see a need to assert their alpha status nor be afraid that others will attack them. The little ones: coke-addled, yapping nut jobs!

People don't like it when pitties and rotties are generalized, please don't make it sound like small dogs are always bad. They are not all the same, any more than any other group of dogs. Those of us who have small dogs love them just as much as you guys love the big dogs. Personally, it love all dogs but it breaks my heart when people talk about little dogs like they're worthless little demons and that's not true. Yes, they bark but so do big dogs. Yes they bite if you assume it's okay to just reach over and pet them, so do big dogs and they can reach your face, I have the scars to prove it but it was my fault, not the dog's and for the record, it was a husky and I misread her body language. Also not the point. It's true, little dogs probably get away with more, oh who am I kidding, my dogs are spoiled but that doesn't mean they're allowed to run around terrorizing the neighborhood. (one weighs six pounds and has one tooth so you can visualize how scary that would be). I understand people don't have to like them but please don't label them like that, they are still dogs and they are loved and our hearts still shatter when they pass away. I mean no offense, it just really upsets me, the same way it does for people who own any breed that is stereotyped.

He was so fluffy, soft and sweet. He would lean against you for hugs. One day the kids and their parents were going on a little trip where they couldn't bring the dog with them, so they asked us if we could watch over him. It was the best day ever. We would lay down in the shadow together, napping during the day. Whenever I see a leonberger, my heart skips a beat because they make me so happy. They're the best.

Beauty Hair Supply stores and well-stocked drug stores, even Walmart, sell loose, netted hair caps.
omg! I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. Uncomfortable for the dog to breathe in and have in his mouth and unsafe.

This has lowered her daily ration need since castrated dogs both male and female has a different metabolism and puts on weight easily.
I'll have to answer you in swedish crowns though since I live in Sweden.
And it is about 220 swedish crowns per week.
These days though she gets all dry food, the wet food variant would be too expensive unfortunatley, since the wet food variant is much more expensive.
And I myself have gotten chronically ill and am very poor these days.
I used to feed her a mix of rawfood and wetfood when she was younger though, back when she could eat anything.

@@Muttisfinallyhere My source was Bing/Wiki. Georgia (Caucasus mountains), Armenia, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Russia are the primary sources of the breed. Caucasian shepherds, as you know, require constant training to remember their one person is the Alpha. It is not a dog for someone with children, living in an apartment, who is gone to work all day. It will
require lots of exercise and a “job”, unless they are guarding livestock.

I love these! We had a puppy one we used to see, near where we walk ours, with her fully grown big brother. I didn't see them for the longest time, then one day I see a Leonburger that looked familiar but not quite so dark in the face... then the dog I was thinking about appeared next to her and we realized at the same time we knew each other and 4 1/4 tons of fur came running towards me one of which still had her puppy brain and energy and remembered I would have treats!

I had a leonberger who reached the age of 13 before passing away. He was my best buddy, and I still miss him even 16 years later. RIP Max, you were the gentlest of giants. Leonbergers are just love disguised as fluffy bears
    *edit
That Leonberger drools way, waaay too much though. His diet should be looked into, I suspect he's given a sugary snack from time to time.
    *edit 2*
For anyone who has a leonberger, or is looking to get one, a tip to deal with their massive furloss is to take a brush with you. Once a day after walking them, spend 2-3 minutes on just brushing them. hard/metal brush for the back, sides, and the chest below the neck, and a soft rubber brush for their legs, stomach, and side of the face. Do not ignore their front legs with the soft brush because you will be amazed how much fur comes off from that area. And if you live in a warm area, consider having them groomed around the end of spring because Leo's get REALLY warm during warm summer weather.
