I was in Georgia (the country) last year and every Georgian person told me: DO NOT APPROACH THE SHEPHERDS. I was visiting a monastery at some point and one of them barked at me and my soul nearly left my body. You're very brave to give him a chance!

The onse that you met there were working, intact and in their element so to speak doggos so the warning was quite needed... The one in this video is the inevitably seriously downgraded version of the real deal and kind of short legged in my oppinion. A true CO and city environment with all its specifics groomers included simply cant happily coexist, those dogs belongs to huge places with some jobs to do.

All the people saying the growling wasn't aggressive and "just a warning" crack me up. All growling is a warning. A warning that the dog is not happy with the situation and is going to bite if the situation continues as is . Quite frankly, I wouldn't have attempted grooming this dog without it being muzzled the entire time. The dog has never been groomed before, doesn't know the groomer, and is bigger than she is. Muzzles are made for just this type of situation. I've seen what a large dog can do to a human, and her inside a small space with him, and him not muzzled, made me extremely nervous. I sincerely hope that she will be more cautious in the future.

    • @signalfire6691

@@trudyisaacs840 I wonder if medicating a dog like this to make them more tranquil is an option. This is truly frightening. I've been bitten by dogs twice (as a child, a friend's police trained German Shepherd and another neighbor's dog that was simply crabby because of the heat) and I've never had a dog since except Goldens. Give me a completely passive dog only.

    • @trudyisaacs840
      @trudyisaacs840 ปีที่แล้ว +35

@@signalfire6691 If you're talking about medicating them around the clock, the answer is no. No reputable vet is going to agree to that. And shouldn't. Everyone looking to get a dog needs to be responsible, and investigate the breed they are interested in. Some breeds are just not a good fit for the average person. Some are not a good fit with families. It's the nature of the breed. Medicating won't stop it. And isn't healthy for the dog. But if you mean medicating for the purpose of grooming, the answer is maybe. Some groomers will agree to sedate a dog who is problematic during grooming. But there are risks with sedation. So many won't agree to it. Instead, they'll muzzle the dog to prevent biting, and may use a sling or straps to immobilize the dog as much as possible. One of the most important things dog owners can do is groom their pets regularly. Play with their feet. Rub their faces around the eyes and ears. Raise their skin around their teeth. Play with their snout. Get them used to being handled. This should start the day you bring your puppy home. It may be difficult if you adopt an older dog, and you may have to muzzle them at first. But getting them used to being picked up, their ears, mouths, and faces being touched, as well as their feet, is essential to having a dog that behaves well during grooming. And vet visits. Sadly, far too many dogs are deemed aggressive and not adoptable, and end up being euthanized. All because their original owner didn't take the time to train them properly.

You shouldn't be afraid of dogs, but you should always bear in mind they have strong jaws, sharp teeth and they're very fast when they want to be. Generally speaking, if it's not your dog then take direction from the owner about how friendly they are and you should always pay attention to the dog's body language and vocalisations (if there are any).
A wagging tail does not mean friendly or happy necessarily.
And if you ever are attacked by a dog, go for the eyes. If you have a heavy object on hand or within grasping distance then you might be able to just cave its skull in as well. A lot of dogs will bite, hold and thrash and you're unlikely to get even a small dog to let go by anything other than training or lethal damage.

My grandfather grew up with not one but 6 of these beauties in Romania. He was a shepard and tended to over 200 sheep. He would take them to a pasture way out in the countryside and lived out there with the sheep as they grazed. The six dogs would be along side him and tended to the sheep. I visited him once and was amazed at the size of the dogs and how well trained they were. My grandfather told me of the numerous times he would find a dead fox and then find some evidence of blood splatter on one of the dogs. It was the foxes, never the dogs. One dog did get into a fight with two wolves and the other dogs came to help out but one wolf was already dead and the other was injured and running away by the time the other dogs came to help. Maybe my grandfather was exagerating, but I do not think so. I stayed with him in his little house in the fields one night and could hear wolves howling. My grandfather would groom the dogs with a huge brush. He said it made the dogs pretty and that made him happy. He would breed them every two years and the demand for the puppies was so high that he was very picky who he sold them to, only the best farmers he knew. When he was too old to be a shepard, he bred the dogs and people as far as Australia would come visit him in hopes of buying a puppy. He only dealt with farmers who would have the dogs to herd animals and would demand updates or he would never deal with them again. He had a loyal following and if they wanted more dogs, they would give him updates.

The lady didn’t even have a crate to keep the dog in while they waited for their owner. She left my dog in a playpen with a board on top so she couldn’t jump out. She also said my dog was “aggressive” at her first appointment. I have found that the Ovcharkas that were bread to be pets rather than farming and guard dogs tend to be more "Mellow" than the ones that are working dogs. Aggression is strong in the working dogs because it is believed it makes them more driven to do the job. Sadly aggression can be a double-edged sword and make the dog uncontrollable and dangerous. In my dealings with the breed, the more "Mellow" ones are just as dedicated and driven to do their job and are more controllable and less likely to hurt family members or livestock. My experience comes from growing up on an Agricultural Collected in the Soviet Union, where we had a small pack of Ovcharkas to guard against wolves and bears.

Most incidents with dogs (especially with big ones) are due to owners being stressed out. On our blog there is a family with a labrador, he's the sweetest thing ever, like legit coming up to cuddle to pretty much everyone, doesn't bark. Except when the owners wife walks him. Whenever she sees me with our dog (a pumi, a sheep herding dog the size of a border collie) she holds the leash really tight and tenses up really hard and the dog starts barking and pulling and everything. The dog notices that her owners family is scared and tries to protect them. He realizes "this person is not in control I need to help them" and that help is scaring away the "threat".
That is why it is important to learn how to behave with a dog first, before taking on more difficult breeds like this big boy.

as a vet assistant, ovcharkas and dogs like them are the kind of pups i will (barring some exceptions) not work on without sedation. they're *so* protective and *so* powerful that one move they see as threatening could wind up with you in the hospital. "Ovcharka" literally means "shepherd dog" in Bulgarian. Considering Karakachans and Caucasians are very strong guard dogs and often fight off bears and wolf packs I am not grooming or even walking towards one without the owner instructing the dog to tolerate me.

This is why I start brushing my puppies 2 weeks after I get them. I let them get acclimated to home, then the training starts! I have a Great Pyrenees and golden retriever so I don’t play with who is in charge. My groomer loves them, they stand still and LOVE being groomed. ❤ I love my babies and I want them to be happy and trust me. That doesn’t just happen by itself. ❤

I have a little Cavalier that barely weighs 20 lbs but, yeah, we started brushes and regular bathes from the start since grooming is going to be a life long must for him. And as soon as he got his shots, he started with the groomer on a 6 week repeating schedule as well. It's all about repetition and training.

I had a CO and I groomed her myself. She was a very social dog, loved people, adored kids and other dogs, even let kittens sleep on her. I could do anything to her and she'd let me just fine but I don't think she'd let anyone else groom her, especially if I wasn't there. These dogs are very independent and make their own rules if the owner isn't there to keep them under control at all times. Mine was one of 9 puppies, and 6 were put down around one year old because the owners couldn't safely take care of them and nobody was brave (or crazy) enough to adopt a giant agressive dog

On the opposite end of the scale, I acquired an eight month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from her owner/breeder. She was the" pick of the litter" as the owner was planning to show her, but then her husband decided to retire and they were going to move and she just did not have the time to work with her. The breeder had seven other CKCSs, anyway. I called her to inquire about when her next litter was due as our CKCS had just died. She offered me this little princess who was already fully house-trained, knew a number of commands, and was thoroughly socialized with other dogs and people. She was perfect.
What I didn't realize is that she had been regularly groomed by the owner and was happy to get in the tub and be washed. Nothing phases her. At the groomers for semi-annual haircuts, the two ladies that run the shop argue about who is going to do her.

For whatever it's worth, I think you are a great dog owner. I used to take my bully puppies to Home Depot to get used to noises and people. I used to breed and show Bull Terriers and I can't tell the number of people that would call me and want a puppy, but hadn't even done any research! People like those are one of the reasons I gave up the hobby.

That was a LOT to ask of an Ovcharka to tolerate a stranger grooming him. It shows your confidence in agreeing to take him. But it also shows his willingness to adapt and show you his boundaries with a low growl vs a lunge or a bite. Good job. I love Ovcahrkas the most of all the dogs. But I just don't want to invest in one unless I can socialise him/her well.

My Dad had a Greek Caucasian, it was huge , they were used for guarding the borders. A friend who was at the military gave it to him as a puppy... They were not for defending only smaller animal like sheep from wolves, but from bears.... Yes bears... One summer, the dog desided to jump into the city's central fountain, because it was too hot. Some police men tried to get him out. He barked once at them...end of the story... they left him in peace , just chilling.... Lovely dog really.... :)
