I wrote something on this. Firstness is the hardest to understand. It is the aspect of things without relation to other things. Here is how Peirce explained how it applied to icons:
"An icon is a sign that refers to the Object that it denotes merely by virtue of characters of its own, and which it possesses, just the same, whether any such Object actually exists or not. It is true that unless there really is such an Object, the icon does not act as a sign; but this has nothing to do with its character as a sign. Anything whatever, be it quality, existent individual, or law, is an icon of anything, in so far as it is like that thing and used as a sign of it."

Here's information on Peirce's idea of indexes and symbols:
The distinction between indexes and symbols is helpful because it helps to show the connection between sign and object. An index is a sign that gets power to represent an object from its spacio-temporal connection with it. A good example is a bullet hole as a representation of a bullet. Its representational power depends on the existence of its object, but not on whether anyone has actually noticed the connection (i.e., the presence of an interpretant). A major part of what the physical sciences do is look for spacio-temporal connections that have not been noticed before (i.e., develop interpretants for indices in nature). A symbol is a sign that has no potential to represent objects without the presence of an interpretant. In other words, because it does not generally resemble or have any close spacio-temporal connection to its object, it represents it because we agree that it does.
