- Descend into the little visited ancient theater of Herculaneum! The monument - used for theatrical performances in Roman Herculaneum- remains buried under the ash and mud deposited from the eruption of Vesuvius, so we'll have to walk through the tunnels of past excavators to view the seating and stage building. It's still a maze that gives a sense of the dangers and efforts of the original explorers, tunneling through the hard volcanic material.

I frequently tell people that Herculaneum is a must visit - less crowded and in many ways better preserved. Two added bonuses - 1. It is rarely as crowded as Pompeii and 2. One of the best burgers I ever had is almost right across the street (VIP Burger). Thank you so much for this video Darius et. al. You always produce fantastic videos that dig deeper into topics not often covered.

The whole Bay of Naples is a fascinating archeological area. Cumae, Miseno and the wonderful cistern of the Roman fleet and, of course, the cities of Vesuvius. Fabulous videos Darius, keep it up.

I really enjoyed this😁. It amazes me how much is still buried, yet to be discovered under the modern town of Ercolano! I have been lucky enough to visit Ercolano on two visits. I will definitely try to go here on my next one.

Many years ago I was stationed at the NATO HQ in Bagnoli, a Napoli suburb. Prowled around Herculaneum and the plethora of Roman ruins many times. Nice to view the many many "updates" available on youtube.

Gives you the sense that the lion's share of Herculaneum has yet to be excavated. Unfortunately, so many apartment buildings surround the sight, making it impossible, at least for now, to have access to the yet to be excavated portions.

Was last there in May. The inclines of the side streets on the way to and from the train station felt like you were walking over actual structures! It was a weird feeling! lol @@DariusArya
I was in Naples for an archaeological conference in 2015. I took an afternoon and visited Herculaneum. I like it better than Pompeii. I did not know about this theatre. I will have to visit again! Great video as always.

I was watching a video recently about how to pyroplastic flow had turned the brains of a few of the only bodies found at Herculaneum into pieces of glass because of the rapid heat a quick cooling of the brain tissue, thats just incredible

Bravo! Absolutely incredible video, the inscriptions were my favorite. Made a great morning for me to start my day at 6:51 AM before I get my work and tasks started for a long day. Makes me feel "stoic" in what otherwise been a kinda rough morning of bits of depression. Hail Hercules! hahaha. So cool. I did not know of this theater site when I visited in 2020.

No- it’s a time capsule as is- and historic building on top. Goal is to make it regularly open to the public.

If it was buried and discovered after Centuries, that means that the marble should still have been lining the walls. Ancient foragers must have found it first and stripped the marble.
That is amazing! This makes me think about the villa of the papyri, which is perhaps even more special. But as far as I know there are almost no video’s of the tunnels of the villa of the papyri and only a few photos (I do know your video of the excavated part). Do you think anyone will ever get the option to make more images (a documentary for example)? You would be very suitable for that! Any idea why no one has had that option yet?

O yes, Herculaneum is my preference to Pompeii. Many buildings stand to two stories, the corner fountains were working - much more evocative than Pompeii.
Both are great, but I agree- Herculaneum is really special (and so much more difficult to unearth)

Radon gas. They should clear out the surface housing and dig out the pyroclastic flow with heavy equipment.
You do know that roman statues were almost never signed or a name put on them, so the plaque might give a name but the actual statue could be recycled form anyone.

He can talk any way he likes as far as I’m concerned, because he takes us to fascinating places, he’s always informative, and he keeps really current with all the most recent excavations. What’s really great is that if you ask a legitimate question, he almost always answers!
