Anything topical can be absorbed by the skin, and after absorption, the chemical travels in the bloodstream.. That is why, still avoid retinol..
Congenital malfunctions could cause lifelong diseases, deformities and even, death... So please avoid

Any retinol can cause abnormalities if you’re pregnant. It’s strongly forbidden among dermatologists and OB Gyns.
