She and Ren left the same management at around the same time and have been supporting each other on their independent road. They have a couple of new collaborations coming out soon. She is another force of nature. Taking her power back Izzy! And giving fair warning.

The piano accompanist is doing an exceptional job of listening to her and timing each note for optimizing the effect.
I see this as her speaking to her former "puppet master" and she's cutting off the fingers that pull the marionette strings.
Her control over her vocals is exquisite. It expresses so many nuances of emotion.
Agree, Chinchilla pianist Zeonkeys is an impressive talent in his own right and adds so much to the live versions of her songs. He also often plays keyboard at Chinchilla's live concerts and festival gigs. Zeonkey is also an arranger and worked with Chinchilla to arrange the live version of Fingers. He has also often works with Emeli Sandé, and has supported her on tour and in TV show appearances (The Graham Norton Show for example).

To me, it's not so much as a song about 'revenge' as it is a reaffirmation to *herself* that no one will be able to put their hands on her again, and if they try, she'll have "her keys in her knuckles" like *she* has to. It's not 'I will hurt you like you hurt me', instead it's 'I will never let you hurt anyone, including me, again..so just don't try'. If her abuser doesn't abuse, she'll let it go..but, if they abuse again..Heaven hath no fury.

I commented similar elsewhere, but since you invited discussion I'll put it here too. 🙂 I agree there is at least an element of revenge in these lyrics and performance, but I don't think it's the main theme. I think this is a song about agency. It expresses some of the rage we feel when someone misuses theirs to control or undermine ours. It's a fundamental human experience that can only go so far before the primal urge for survival kicks in. If the recipient has just enough sense of self to reject the attempted cannibalism of their own will, the conflict becomes a "them or me" battle. Survival of the fittest demands one step up and commit to neutralising an existential threat first and then possibly indulge some revenge later if you still want to.
I really love the symbolism of Chincilla's performance claws in this particular song. We use our hands to do or facilitate almost everything a human does! They are one of the foremost tools of our individual agency in the world. Obviously cutting her abuser's fingers off will leave them pretty much impotent while her own freedom and agency are now healed and intact. The underpinning visual is of the fingers which allow her to utilise those qualities in her expression, celebrated on display with every available adornment!

Again love the honesty. I personally feel connected to her lyrics as empowerment. Not to hurt anyone but more like I know I’m worth it so don’t even try to mess with me that way. (Past abusive relationships so there’s that). Though I believe she is actually referring more to her break off from the label at the time.
This song actually took me a few times to warm up to. I find that many songs I end up really liking long term are often ones that don’t resonate at first blush.

Izzy you are so laid back, I do like that. I think maybe she is fighting back from some abuse, taking her power back. NOW try to check out her appearance on the Voice UK, she is really great in that live as well, she just has an amazing voice and stage presence, lots of confidence in herself, love it. i saw it on your screen at the end of this track, enjoy, I'll be watching for it.

I don't know her background, but I think it is a great metaphor. Nobody knows a domestic abuser usually better than the victim, and the abuser aims to remove that power from their target immediately. Sadly, this disempowerment through mental and physical abuse shames and even normalises the victims experiences. Here, she is recovering her power and she is removing the fingers one by one. Each time he takes takes a tactically swipe, she is learning how to disarm it. She doesn't need a knife to remove his arsenal, she is her own armoury. This 'man' is nothing without his control on her.
The subject matter isn't revenge it's domestic violence, and what drives a woman to want revenge.
Close your eyes and feel the passion in her voice.

Chinchilla is a great producer and her "studio" tracks are fun but my favorite Chinchilla performances are those where production is minimal and we can experience the power and control of her voice.
Personally I don’t see it as revenge; rather it’s more about her own redemption. She’s not the same broken person that this person remembers- from the sounds of it ,and from personal experience, a narcissist with control issues. I think she is metaphorically cutting off their fingers by cutting off her response to them ( caving in to their manipulation) and, for the above described person, that means cutting off 1) attention and 2) responding to their behavior.
Even though she APPEARS to be the same, meets in the “ same/ favorite spot” she will not only allow for this person to pull HER under, she makes sure that they KNOW that she won’t let OTHERS be subjected to what they put her through. As a woman we are VERY familiar with keeping your keys in your fingers and looking behind ourselves, period. Karma won’t be from Chinchilla- she’s grown and moved forward- but it WILL come, so maybe they should think twice before they do the same thing to anyone else.
I like that idea, of cutting off the attention etc. and the metaphor of cutting off fingers. Loosens the grip of the abuser. Well, removes it or makes it impossible, I guess. Cool stuff. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
The subject of this song was a “breakup” with her previous record label
I know she's said that - nice to get the dig in for her, no doubt - but let's be honest, it's about a previous, abusive "romantic" relationship. You don't feel the need to put your keys in your knuckles because of a contractual dispute.
Apparently it was written in response to how she was treated by a record label in the past? It wasn't directed necessarily as revenge against a person, but the concept of being taken advantage of and mistreated.
Fingers (Live and Studio versions) are from Chinchilla's Moon Maintenance for Dummies EP. This was released whilst she was under her old management and label - a year or two before leaving both. Little Girl Gone was released after Chinchilla left her previous management - her previous label chose not to pick the track up though, so Chinchilla released it herself as an independant artist.

Yeah, I can see the Jack The Ripper vibes. Well, I’ve only been listening to it so far, refreshing my memory and thinking what I could do with it. Might take a bit of time. Spent too much time listening to Signing Off! Forgot how much I love that album! Ain’t listened to UB40 for years.
@@IzzyIzenstainAs a teen i loved to listen to UB40, Specials, Madness, The Beat any band that had a Sax and trumpet. Singing Off is a great album to chill out to, love Food For Thought. UB40 need more recognition for what they achieved back in the 80s/90s.

Izzy, I think it’s more about physical abuse, or maybe an attack. I think that’s something a majority of men struggle to find relatable. A majority of women can relate to it all too well. 😶❤️

Consider giving the song a second listen and watch, imagining a woman who has been abused/SA’d etc. that’s where this is coming from. I think 99% of women feel this song to their core, its harder for men to understand, especially if you’re not an abuser or haven’t been around that stuff 🫶🏼

Unlike a lot of Chinchillas stuff I think, this is not actually her lyrics for a change. This was lyrics by Daisy Matilda Bertenshaw. But they really fit her bad ass and female empowerment vibe.

Subject matter - no, not revenge, it’s making sure someone will never hurt you or anyone else again. It’s not cutting their fingers off to hurt, it’s so they will never pull her or anyone else down again.
It’s saying “I will not be your victim again. You bled me dry once, and not again. I’m not the same person I was when you hurt me. I’ve moved on”
Thats what I get from it - definitely NOT revenge.
In this case the designer is Alvaro Mars, Chinchilla confirmed this in an interview. Chinchilla works with both established and up & coming fashion designers and stylists, but always maintains executive control over her image and style. Chinchilla's headwear can be self made and/or stylised (as in Little Girl Gone and Fingers Live) but she will also source such from specialist artistic milliners or costumers (Elements for example) depending on the image she is trying to portray.
