My mom is a dark-skinned woman and she died of COPD. Whenever she was hospitalized, they would measure her oxygen saturation with that device and it would always show her oxygen level in the upper 90 percentile, even when she was struggling to breath. This explains why.

When my daughter had an infection after a surgical procedure, the doctor asked me if the area was red, and my reply was, well she's dark skin, so redness will not be visible as it would on a light skin. Most of the symptoms they look for don't apply to dark skin people. It's 2024, medical text books need to change.

I recall a similar medical student in the UK also wrote a "book" to raise awareness of how symptoms and signs can present differently on darker skin as well as highlighting the different language that needs to be used in descriptors and this is widely used in the medical field. It's painfully sad and hurtful on so many levels the lack of knowledge and empathy the medical community has for the melanin blessed. It takes a toll mentally, physically and emotionally. I was somewhat ignorant to the treatment until getting a drastic solution to an issue and feeling treated with the coldness of a lab experiment. That was mid 2000's. During the lockdown in 2020, seeking treatment for a non-covid issue, poor treatment by a doctor for no reason made the disassociation very obvious. To the point the doctor refused to look to see if bones were broken. So glad Joel Bervell is out here spreading knowledge and doing great works for the masses. Many blessings 🙏🏾😌💙🖤✨

I completely agree. Research is usually done on how things will affect white males. Racism plays a huge part, whether willingly or unknowingly, and so does sexism. Drugs are mostly tested on white men, so the safety and efficacy is determined by their stats, as opposed to women or darker skinned people. Crash-test dummies are the same, they used to all be adult male size, so car crash trauma information was all skewed to an adult male demographic. Luckily things have slowly started to change, but too little too late in many circumstances.

it is not just about darker skinn it is about taking in the diversity of people because even amongst darker skinned people there is diversity. like he said they put a blanket statement over black people in terms of muscle mass which also screwed them over. we need to throw out the race theory and properly use the ethnic diversity (because all people of african decent are not the same genetically or even of the same ethnic group, in my country alone there ar up to 9 different african ethnic groups, the same goes with different asian countries and even europeans are not all the same ethnically. racism/race theory is screwing everyone over especially more melanated people.

I've never heard of Dr Bervell, but I'm so impressed with his message and interest in helping people. I appreciate someone that thinks outside of the box. I haven't been able to get proper mainstream health care- very few Dr's will say the word 'lymphedema' much less realize that 'no, water pills and a diet will not make it go away', but I feel that this young man would have a more open mind to the problem. I've watched many plus size fashion vids on TH-cam that often have larger ladies of all colours and I see lymphedema as being a common problem, it's not all fat, low exercise and an inappropriate diet. It's a disease- that may start in the kidneys or genetics, etc- but thinkers, like Dr Bervell are the ones that are going to see past the problem to the solution.

I used to watch this show about a group of female Black doctors. They complained about how all the medical text books only had illustration how an injury, infection or whatever would present on white people. Of course in wouldn't present the same on POCs. Also the measure of a health weight is base on yt men. This effects health diagnoses as well.

He isna great example of why I became intentional about getting an all Black medical team. For years I suffered extremely painful cycles. Doctors would just prescribe higher doeses of meds or speak to me in a way that let me know they did understand or care. I finally got a black Gyno and found out the paid was due to fibroids and endometriosis. I ended up losing a fallopian tube. Ive have white and "brown" doctors dismiss breathing issues and pain. I refuse to deal with that anymore

Skincare, healthcare, haircare, you CANNOT BE COLOR BLIND! There are DIFFERENCES. If a dermatologist, hairdresser, spa therapist, or medical professional has not been trained in how to deal with people with those differences but they are providing services to people with those differences, they are a LIABILITY. They will be a lawsuit MAGNET for malpractice and damages.
There was that viral video of a white doctor using an alcohol swab on a dark-skinned patient and he did not know that the skin cells that will naturally slough off when you rub the skin with alcohol would contain melanin and he was accusing the patient of being dirty. It's that kind of deficiency in training and ignorance that makes many black and brown people seek out doctors within their own ethnicity. We've also heard the stories of hairdressers damaging the hair of people with 3C to 4B curl type hair, because they don't know how to treat with it. They should NOT be dealing with such clients until they are properly trained.

My only hope is that he's taking care of himself too and has a strong support system because physician burnout is a real thing. The fact that this racial divide still exits even in our medical system is maddening and crazy.

Did this young man not complete his residency - WHY is he not being addressed as Doctor?? He EARNED his MD; let's honor him like we would a White Doc.
Doctor Joel, ur a gift. Bless and thank you for the education you impart!!

He has not completed his residency. He is still a medical student. I just pray he doesn’t get distracted. My daughter is in residency and it’s rough. Super rough/tough as a black woman in ortho. You definitely need a village.
