Filling The Inspection Pit & Laying A Concrete Slab

  • In this video I fill the inspection pit in my workshop and lay a concrete slab in the process of completing the works to the floor of my workshop, with a little help from my brother Alan. The pit was filled with household rubble following refurbishment works at our property. We used a mix of sharp sand and cement to create the concrete mix that we used. I believe that the sharp sand acts as both the sand and the aggregate content in the concrete (that's what I'm told anyway! This was my first time using concrete for anything on this scale before. This should not be viewed as a how to video, it's more of a how we did it video - having said that, it did seem to work out well! We used a cement mixer to mix the concrete, and screeded the finish using a piece of timber.

You’ve done a strong mix but that’s fine
The brick in the mixer is a good idea we always do this
The pit will be fine if your not putting very heavy weights over it like a vehicle
The reinforcement in the concrete is ok
You did a good job for a novice

Agree with not using bricks, they are meant to go in walls not mixers. In the past I have used stones and even beat the drum with timber or a hammer but realised that only dents up the drum which just gives it more places for everything to hold.
I sometimes use gravel if its been a hot day but I find it far easier to keep the mixer clean between mixes, quick rinse around the front with a brush after emptying each mix. Spend a few minutes at the end of the day to clean it out.

    • @AtomicReverend

Concrete has compression strength but not tensile strength, as the other commenter said above it doesn't flex (bend) without cracking. The steel helps prevent this as it has extremely high tensile strengh. On a small slab like this one in the video that is filling a pit that was locked in with a steel perimeter it probably wasn't needed... That being said the fill material may compact more if moisture gets into the pit and if that's the case the concrete may crack but the steel in the concrete should hold it together if a void ends up under it.
Think of it lile this Rome didn't use steel that is why everything is arched so it can carry the load to a compression point (vertical load), where a modern freeway like that is all over in the USA has huge spans with very little support, it is the steel in the concrete that allows it to happen...
The only bad part of steel is it can rust and if that happens the steel expands and will actually cause the concrete to sprawl and crumble, it is why WWII bunkers are already looking terrible in the wet areas of Europe. For the most part no post industrial revolution concrete (after steel became cheap) that has steel will last like roman structures but Granite rocks work like concrete and don't provide tenional support ant I wouldn't recommend using them in place of steel if someone's life maybe depending on it in say like a structure or bridge or retaining wall.

I think gravel should normally be used, but I am no expert. I used gravel when I made a small platform outside my conservatory to place an air source heat pump condenser on. It has so far survived without any cracks

You have made possibly one big mistake you have not inserted a damp proof membrane and you would usually do the following: 1. hardcore, 2. sharp sand, 3. damp proof membrane, 4. steel reinforcing, 5. concrete. One of my old clients was a concrete flooring contractor and they were the first UK company to lay about 20,000 sq metre concrete floor in one continuous pour. The concrete wagons came in 2 at a time for 18 hours and 3 concrete plants were used and 3 crews were used together with a laser screed machine they gave an accuracy that had never been achieved before using the traditional methods. I supplied the lighting which was 30 KW of halogen lighting which ran all night and was repositioned during the night

You should have gone down the road a bit more as CT Bakers are bloody expensive. I Have been in a few times and walked out empty handed. Give S&M a look, I use them for more things i need as they are 5 minutes away from me. Just keep Driving down the Road past the turning for C T Baker.

It probably won't be a problem, but make a mental note to yourself that you didn't allow the metal to rust first, and mention it to the next owners should you move out. It might take 25-50 years before anything shows up, but you'll probably see signs of concrete cancer eventually. Obviously it ain't structural so nowt is going to go wrong, but it'll need digging up and relaying eventually.

No doubt the job will last well enough with foot traffic but not an adequate base for heavy woodworking machinery. Minimum depth of 100mm for light duty concrete, 150mm for machinery. It wasn't concrete as no aggregate, I would call it closest to a screed mix. The infill would have been fine if it was consolidated every 150mm or so and it was just rubble - the extra waste material added will not be stable. Ideally the rubble would have stopped 150mm from surface and then a layer of sand to fill voids and smooth the surface. DPM on the sand would stop the damp and make for stronger concrete as it wouldn't leach the water out whilst drying. Also, the steel should have been removed as it will rust and break the smooth edge away. Any steel wire or rod makes OK reinforcing but flat or angle steel makes the concrete much weaker. Not completely sure that was strictly legal - clean rubble is allowable as a product but the rest of the waste was a bit shaky. Having said all of that I would imagine the worst problem you will get is a bit of a hollow sound on that bit every now and again and it certainly solved two problems.

I have made too many mistakes over the years and learnt the hard way. When I said remove the steel I meant the angle iron around the edge that was cast into the floor, most of the added "rebar" was OK. Many thanks for hosting such a great channel.

Well there are definitely couple of things I would do differently (not being smart ass just trying to provide feedback, also not saying my way is the only/best way)
    1. Ruble as a base is OK bud you should have compacted it in small layers if two bricks lock up you can bash it how ever long you want but cavity under it remains (maybe you have done this off camera dont know)
    2. I would remove those stairs, they just create more unfilled cavities and makes filling more difficult just braking or cutting bolts and throwing everything into scrap metal is fine
    3. Scrap mesh at the top is ok but only the big pieces actually does something, best way (using rebar) would be to drill into sides of existing floor insert rebar into hole and tie it together with the rebar in new concrete therefore creating mostly monolithic slab. Rebar is used not to make concrete stronger but rather to make it more flexible thats why those small pieces of metal is nothing more than space fillers although they wont harm anything so no pity
    4. Best way to mix concrete is to count shovels use whole bags of cement and using buckets for water to have consistent mix, also I use water as first ingredient so that nothing sticks to the mixer

  • @andrewholdaway813

I don't think random scrap metal is anywhere close to a substitute for rebar.

    • @nathanlucas6465
      @nathanlucas6465 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's not going to be as strong as rebar, but definitely stronger than no rebar. I've used steel mesh like that for concrete shed bases a few times. Seems to have worked

Personally I think it was a mistake to fill the pit in, you never know how it could have been utilised, even as a selling point if you decide to move on in the future. There's paint on waterproofing you could have used to seal it and it it would have been fine. Your poor bro, turned up expecting a sherry and mince pie and you put him to work on the shovel.. 😉
