  • Hello all, and happy Earth Day! This is a walkthrough of my backpacking gear and some elaboration on how it is used. This is also a video presentation for my (now online) Applied Environmental Design class at Ringling, but I wanted to share it with anyone who wanted to see. I've been wanting to talk gear for a while now. :)
If you have any questions on anything in the video, please feel free to ask. I am always happy to chat about backpacking.

This was so fun to watch, like genuinely relaxing and I loved it so much. I really, really hope you don't mind me mentioning this, but I thought I'd go ahead and say- parks in the US that don't get much annual rainfall and/or are very arid (like deserts or high alpine areas), take a super long time to decompose toilet paper, so you do have to pack it out there! I bring a ziploc bag covered with duct tape to um.... block out the trash.
Also I JUST learned that you should store down sleeping bags in a large container when you're not using them because compressing the loft actually keeps the down from being able to store heat and reduces the lifespan!!! I don't want to be an internet "here's what you should do" jerk, but I know how much sleeping bags cost, so I thought you might want to know!!!! ofc ur bag might be synthetic so whatever :)
    thanks for the video!!!!!!!

Madeline Clay thanks so much, and I appreciate your advice! A couple of things (fortunately), this particular section of the trail got quite a lot of moisture and rainfall so there wasn’t much of an issue with decomposition. However I actually was packing away my toilet paper for the first 4 of 7 days (with the duct tape on the outside hehe) until my hiking partner said “hey it’s okay to bury it”. In a drier area I would have been more hesitant. As for my sleeping bag, that’s really good to know! Mine is synthetic down but I will keep it in mind for the future.

At my old middle school, our class would go backpacking in desert every Fall. The first time I ever went, there was a giant rainstorm during the night which resulted in every body of water we found afterwards filled with red pigment. The next Fall it was the opposite! We found running water like once the entire time and accidentally got lost on numerous occasions because none of our teachers had been there before. Despite all this, I love backpacking so so much and can’t wait to go again soon! So cool to see you post videos like this!

I went twice and this video made me excited to go again! also to buy new gear lol. first time we went to Scotland and it rained soo much (what do ya expect girl) and I did not have waterproof shoes, facepalm. Also there were so many bugs, midges are the worst, there were times that you couldn't stop walking cus they would swarm you and bite you. but if you walk they can not keep up. But still it was such a great adventure and I have lovely memories. The second time we went in Switzerland and man we underestimated mountain climbing lol. it was great though! and no rain this time, it was almost too warm.
