The AFL has had many rule changes over its 120 year history. But only a few of these rule changes are brought about as a result of certain player's actions. These are those rule changes.

You beat me to it. He used to hold his ground, catching the ball and disposing it using his bulk. He was “ only” 198cm I believe, but over 100kg so a big solid body to move out of the way is you couldn’t jump over him. A great player in his day.
3:48 that rule also came from Joel Bowden rushing two behinds in a row to chew up critical time in a game against Essendon earlier in 2008 which allowed Richmond to walk away with a 4 point win
A couple here. The Dissent rule. One thing about Rugby Union is that if you approach the umpire and ask what the issue was, they'll speak to you all day, but approach them like you're going to rip their head off, and they'll deal with you, let alone send you off. If a player asks what the infringement was and does it in a cordial or amenable way, there shouldn't be any cause for Dissent and a 50 meter penalty being paid. Asking a question shouldn't result in that harsh a punishment. Secondly, the no touching umpires rule. When was that brought in again? I follow the AFL exclusively (I'm American) but can't remember which year it was brought in. But I do remember back in 1997 in.. I believe it was round 13 (State of Origin round) where Mark Ricciuto was running towards the ball, and the umpire was backing into him, Roo jumped all over the umpire's shoulders trying to get around him, and nothing was done. Now, even shaking hands or something with them at a break, or helping to pick them up after they've fallen to the ground could get you suspended.
As a former Umpire, the no touching an Umpire rule is a good one, it stops players "deliberately" running in to your back at a ball up. I have had players do this, you are totally not expecting contact. I was a player in the same league a few years earlier and I think some of it was a get square from when I played against the same players.
@@malcolm4672 yet on the opposite side of that, an umpire not knowing his surroundings and steering clear of the congestion head clashes with a player, putting him out of the game for a week through concussion protocols, and puts himself on a stretcher after collapsing and stomach wretching/vomiting puts the player at being fined when that player wasn't anywhere near the contest either and simply running to their defensive 50 to provide pressure. That's what happened to umpire Troy Pinnell, and Nic Malceski.

There's no questioning that.. but the problem here is that even accidental contact gets someone fined or suspended or sent to the Tribunal, even if they weren't the one who initiated the contact. That's the problem with the rule, and the Nic Malceski/Troy Pinnell incident is a prime example of that.
Selwood was neither ducking nor dropping in either of the examples. He receives s the ball in a low stance and when the tackle comes, he lifts his arm to draw the high contact. You can see the height of his head not changing in both examples shown. Keeping on Geelong though, Blicavs changed the 3rd man up rule. Now only 2 players can nominate to contest for ball ins or throw ups.
It's crazy how everyone exaggerates Selwood "ducking". Averaged 2.5 free kicks per game in his career, most of which came from being one of the most courageous players the game has seen and being second of all time for tackles.
The deliberate out of bounds rule is atrocious. Most of the time, the ball is kicked off the side of the boot while the player is under pleasure. Or the ball just bounces badly and rolls over the line.
This is something that the SANFL has fixed pretty well by removing the 'intent' factor imo. If the ball goes out of bounds from a disposal without being touched by any other players then it's a free kick to the opposing team.
Lindsay Thomas brought in 3 rules changes and 1 updated one. 1. Sliding in became banned 2. His high contact was further scrutinised. 3. His diving for frees led to fines for staging 4. The rule about "if you choose to bump, and make contact with a players head even if it's an accident, will mean you're liable" came about from Lindsay Thomas choosing to bump a pies player and both players clashed heads. The pie player was out concussed but Lindsay played on. The bullshit part was literally the very next week after the rule change came in I recall someone very popular did the exact same thing and it was judged "nope wasn't a bump, it was an accidental clash of heads". I feel it was chris Judd who did it but I could be wrong. As for Tony Greene's "studs up" act, Jarrod Waite did it for YEARS in marking contests and was never ever pulled up for it. He would put his boot right in the middle of players backs to protect the drop zone and cos he most often took the mark (and it also wasn't banned) there was no scrutiny on it.
From memory Collingwood (Eddie) complained to the AFL about Geelong using a 3rd man up (Blicavs) in forward ruck contests and the league changed the rule.
I haven't watched much football in the last 20years, but you used to be able to handball the ball ahead on the ground prior to a tackle to get safe distance and run onto it in space. That rules been removed for some reason, and I'd love to know why?? It was such a good play!
That was what the Bartlett rule was about. Handpassing/dribbling it out in front of yourself to avoid a holding the ball call, not when bouncing it. What's silly about the rule is that as infuriating as it was when KB did it, because he was a master of it, is that most of the time a player is more likely to cough it up anyway.

08 joel bowden for richmond did that exact tactic against essendon which won us the game. Hawks capitalised on it in the granny. so bowden higlighted it and the hawks made the rule change :)
Hands in the back when in a marking contest has changed a few times. Big forwards (like Hawkins) have the benefit of being able to hold their position of they're at the drop of the ball (not push someone who is already set in this position out of the way). Often misinterpreted by fans.
the thing about the Luke Shuey tackle is that the "duck" wasn't paid. It was the second one, where he's on the ground and Polec goes high again, that was paid. But it's also a stupid rule because all the player is doing is exploiting poor tackling technique. You're punishing players because their opponent's don't know how to tackle properly. And players are still allowed to attempt to dodge tackles which in some circumstances results in them having no option but to try and "duck" under the tackle. That's why the rule is so inconsistent. Umpires have no way of knowing if the high contact was the player deliberately trying to draw the high contact or them just trying to avoid the tackle. The sliding rule also needs to be abolished. It was a massive overreaction to a rare injury.
There needs to be a line draw between what dissent is and isn't. If you scream at the umpire and tell him to fuck off, sure, that'd be an obvious free kick, but there shouldn't be any rules against dissent immediately after the play has stopped. Hands in the air wondering what is going on is a natural reaction after the whistle's blown and play is stopped
in none of those clips of captain blood copping a high tackle did he deliberately duck into it. he had a brilliant and legal technique of raising his arms against a tackle so they would slide up over his shoulder. don't perpetuate the myth that he scammed frees...

He pushes the arm up but he doesn't duck at all. He said on the Backchat podcast that he saw NFL players do that to break tackles and thats when he started doing it. It's a good way to break tackles (and in the AFL get free kicks).
Lindsay Thomas also broke a Collingwood players jaw with a shepherd back in 2013. So the next year a clash of heads in a bump was reportable, Fyfe being one of the only players suspended for it.

They need to bring in last disposal (kick or handball) out of bounds as a free to the opposition, as the "insufficient intent rule", which has reared its ugly head over the past few years, is (mostly) guesswork from the umps. Also, if a player who is in possession of the ball simply walks over the boundary line with the ball it should be a free to the opposition. These rules would allow a more free flowing game and fewer boundary thrown ins, which in my opinion, are a detriment to the game

Outside of him and nic nat's ruck tap chemistry, ducking was basically his hole game for a couple of years until they changed the rule. Would actually love to know how many free kicks he got, but cba rsearching it. But anyway he is so good at it he still hets away with it regualarly.
They should bring back the Matthew Primus rule. Taking the ball out of the ruck and not disposing of it before being tackled should be holding the ball
A lot of rule changes end up causing unintended consequences. Its common now for players to take a set shot at goal from outside 50 so they can run the clock down as far as possible, then pass the ball. There will be a game sometime when a player tries it from 70 metres out. That is just taking the p1ss. This rule needs some refinement.
i reckon if they chew up all 30 seconds then pass the ball, the time gets added back and its a free kick against them from where they passed it, so at bare minimum they will at least start taking the shot
I think it's kinda settled where if the player is already up there and puts the hands down to steady himself and then marks it a la Brad Ottens in 2006, it's ok.
Byron Pickett (North Melbourne & others) forced a rule change re sideway bump on a player. He wwas compact & hard as nails. When he laid a legit sideways bump the other player often didn’t get up. In fact many wouldn’t see it coming.
Keep in mind with the mason wood rule is now if players are caught wasting time play on will be called. So it lasted longer then a year actually. Just gotta pretend ur not wasting time lol
I say they should get rid of the push in the back tackle, it isn't really a push in the back it just look like a normal tackle it's a bs free kick it doesn't deserve to be a free kick it should just be a ball up.
remember they added no studs in the back rule (because of greene) but right at the end of the season they got rid of the rule because of jack riewoldt. And then riewoldt abused it during finals.
I think the rushed behind rule is good. It's junk play to watch a player walk the ball over the line 10m or more from an opposing player. I like seeing the defender in that type of scenario actually have to play!

"Speccys" should be a free kick against the person trying to mark the ball. Running at full speed and then putting your knees into a defender's head is completely incompatible with the concussion rules. The purists will hate it but it has to be happen.

i agree that dissent deserves reprimand, but not all questioning a decision is dissent. makes it hard to adjudicate...

Sling tackle due to concussions which is now just any potential to cause injury tackling action.

Shuey didn't duck. He shrugs and pushes the tacklers arms up. Watch it again, he doesn't go down.
