I remember that as a little kid, one of the first spooky things I watched was The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has been incredibly important to me since. It was one of the major things that kick started my deep love of horror. So I'm incredibly grateful for this episode. Thank you.
Wait. So the story of the headless horseman is a story of a guy getting pranked by a ghost story and running away in fear... I always figured the story at least pretended the HH was real.
I think it was meant to be ambiguous but Irving pretty much implies it was Bram. I wish it was a little more vague, like bram only followed ichabod for so long before the real horseman took over or something like that.
There’s a Hallmark film that goes along the lines of the book and it depicts Brom initially chasing Ichabod before getting knocked out. Then the real horseman shows up. It’s a good look at the story’s ambiguity in terms of depicting what really happened while everyone else is in the dark.

Plus Brom was a healthy young man; do you really think that a lively young man full of testosterone had no interest in the blooming Katrina? Marrying for love/infatuation only started in the late 18th/early 19th century and took even longer in tucked away small towns like Sleepy Hollow. Katrina was surely not the only "blooming" girl in that town, but she was the girl to be courting when it came to status and money.
