I think you're a good teacher. Ayden is very lucky that you are not only trusting in him but, that you are teaching him great as well. I've never been a fan of external hinge but, what ever works you have to go with it. You've helped me realize that school took the creativity away from me. Before I went to tech school I used to draw and try to do really cool stuff but, after years of having to make thinkgs factory that is just what I did because that's the way it's done instead of creating new fun stuff. Thanks for that and for teaching everyone to just follow your feelings. If it works that's just the best part and if it doesn't well you learned that it needs another way !
After reading some comments about this being two cars.. I realized I’ve forgotten this was two cars. It’s becoming it’s own thing. Awesome Chad! 🔥🔥🔥🙌🙌🙌🍻
Chad, haven't had much to say. Been following you through several builds. Top hinge needs to move up to bulge in body line (where the hinge is now) for balance look and more leverage and strength. Love your work and your girl she seems so nice and so easy on the eyes as you know. I'm a retired metal and wood worker who started my work in a custom body shop in Muncie, IN. in 1960. I have a studio shop in Freeport Florida between Panama City and Pensacola on the Gulf of Mexico where I play my days away on many projects. Going to visit you on trip to Nova Scotia hopefully this fall. I've heard it's the best time of year to visit.

Lol I regret it already, I used to work overnight and you had the choice to wear knee pads, I usually didn’t and now my knees hurt when I get on them, it’s worse cause I messed them up a couple years before I worked overnight
I'm really reluctant to comment since you are so much better able to establish what is best for designing this artful creation. But, I am concerned about the sag within the hinges and denting of the fender by the opened door. The hinges now on the truck (right side) seem to assume there will be a person holding the open door and also aiding the person entering. I wonder if it is practical to extend the lower hinge and tilt its "pin" so it aligns with the reworked top hinge pin. NOTE this above thought is intended to be considered ONLY if there is any doubt in Bad's mind.
Absolutely love how you did the hinge, shows you don’t need a bunch of store bought stuff to come up with something that will work. Thanks again for sharing with us.😊
The big ass hinges look awesome !!! Ya doing great ! Keep On Building, never stop. Jolene is getting better and better. I'm sure filming everyday helps. Great channel.
Try the bottom hinge on the flared section - about 3" from the bottom of the door. Add a new hinge at the top and make the hinge pins line up with each other. Then they don't need to stand much above the door. If you keep the bottom hinge on the window section of the door it will need to be 4" or 5" out, or maybe 6" forward - same as the width of the flare in the body it has to clear.

Chad you and Jo are good people. Thank you for sharing your lives and skills. Your work ethic sharing will not go to waste. Aiden is a lucky guy to have a mentor like you.
I know you need the original top hinge for alignment but that may be the best spot for the new top hinge. Installing the new top one in Its place may give the door more uniform support. Love watching you hustle to get the job done...it's like poetry in motion!
The hinges remind me of the ones on my Model T Coupe, they mount inside the post, Ford put a 90 degree bend where it hits the inside for added strength, great job working with what you have. 👌
Think you still need to space those hinges out, maybe up to where the original top hinge is? That will provide more vertical stability. But that was a good workaround the hinge dilemma!
Glad you came up with a hinge solution that you like. I like the door opening better like this than having to pull back the lower corner to get past the bulged side.
I like the way you are teaching Aiden, not just metal work but the concept of quality work. I always use the wet rag method of weld cooling on sheet metal and wonder what your opinion of that might be.

Great job on the door hinges Chad. I would not have probably thought that moving the pivot point forward like that would solve the door opening problem.
Good results on fabricating the door hinges. Once welded completely and proper hinge pins installed it should swing open with clearance. Should last if no one pulls themselves up with the door to get in. Need outside vertical handle to aid in getting inside.
In the same way that one side of the hinge will attach to the structure of the truck body, the other side must attach to the structure of the door. @Bad Chad Take a look at the front of the door cut lines on a 48 Buick. Where the body bulges out (similar to your doors) the cut line bends forward to allow the needed clearance that a straight cut does not. It will likely allow you to keep the hinges in a much cleaner looking position and not sticking several inches off of the body.
I love to see the confidence you have in Aiden by giving him a little challenge on making his first patch. Keep up the good work Aiden, you have a awesome opportunity to learn what it takes to be in the custom car world.

Use the normal hinges. Allow the bottom of the door to rotate INTO THE FENDER like scooping out icecream from the container. When you close it the bottom of the door returns to its proper alignment. Sit down in a chair in front of the door and visualize where that front edge of the lower door wants to go, see it swinging in? Then let it. You will meed to build in a stop so that the door cannot open more than about 80 degrees or it will hit the lip of the front fender.

Did his son tell him where to stick it? He's not on the show anymore...
Thanks Chad, you are keeping the "old look" to the hinge design. Now some rear view mirrors on top of those hinges to cap them.
Big truck , big hinges,
I damn near lost it....
