For the first time last year we tried a slightly different method of growing in buckets. Instead of drilling holes in the bottom we drilled holes on the side about 3 inches from the bottom. Before adding our soil mixture we put in a thick layer of seaweed. When water pooled at the bottom the seaweed became liquid fertilizer. We had the best tomato, eggplant and peppers ever.

I garden in raised bed and buckets. I read recently that beach seaweed had to much salt. We live in South Louisiana near the Gulf. Is there somewhere else I could get seaweed like a nursery? Or is there a way to remove the salt ?

    Hi Brian
I downsized from 20 gallon containers to 5 gallon buckets last year and saw no reduction in production. Last year I did celebrity, bush early girl, cherry and Roma in 5 gallon.

I am mainly a container gardener. I have a buried petroleum pipe under the rear of my backyard, and I dont want to take chances. I grow at least 4 varieties each year, 5 this year. I have found that earthbuckets do the best for bigger tomatoes like beefsteak and brandywines. The nice thing about earthbuckets is they are cheap to make and take a lot of the guesswork out of watering The next best is a 7 gallon grow bag. No matter what container use you, you will likely be using some kind of potting mix. Make sure to add garden lime for calcium as most potting mixes dont have enough to prevent blossom end rot.

You introduced me to a tomato variety called Arkansas Traveler, saying that it was bred in the Ozark Mountains. As I live in the Ozark Mountains, I ordered some straightaway and started them. I planted 4 seeds just 10 days ago, so they're still young but doing very well so far in my greenhouse. I also have 2 Better Boys sprouted and a Beefsteak that I had planted before I watched your video and learned that Beefsteak may not be so happy in my area, but I'm so excited to finally -- for the first time ever -- have a successful tomato harvest by following your tips and tricks. Thank you so much!

We had a horrible season last year here in S Central TX but the one tomato that did well was my Large Red Cherry that I had in a 7 gallon pot. It was over the top of my 10’ trellis and still producing (small amounts) even through the hot weather.
Just planted 23 of the 43 tomatoes I’m doing this year with about 1/3 in pots.

Wonderful information. I am growing Roma tomatoes in a 7 gal grow pot. The 7 gal pots were cheaper than the 5 gal, so I figured it wont make a difference. As I've commented before this is my first year growing a garden and I'm in Phoenix AZ where it's warm/hot pretty much all season long.

Thank you. I did grow Garden's Delight a cherry tomato in the house in a pot. That was mad and it was so much fun and we have to tie up to the wall. Another woman who was from Iran, grew her Roma tomato behind the television. The vine spread, the tomatoes were so juicy and according to her daughter she had the tomato for years.

I've grown Glacier (determinate, 55 days) in a raised bed, liked the flavor, will try it in a large pot this year. I grew Bush Early Girl (determinate, 54 days), in a 5 gallon pot, had a large number of medium sized tomatoes, very good tasting. One winter I grew Orange Pixie Hybrid (determinate, 52 days, 18" tall) indoors in my greenhouse window in a one gallon pot, small tomatoes, very delicious; it grew more than the 18" that was advertised, very leggy indoors, perhaps not the best way to grow it, but the small tomatoes were really tasty. I've also grown Moskvich (determinate, 60 days) in 2 gallon bag, though I think larger would be better, good tasting small tomatoes, always the first seedlings to pop up, the easiest to take cuttings from to propagate for plants later in the summer. I had a similar experience to Brian's growing Sungold (indeterminate, 57 days) in 5 gallon pot, very sweet orange cherry; I picked my last tomatoes in December including green ones which I ripened inside; and both the ripe and ripened green tomatoes were still, very, very sweet and delicious.

Been waching on TH-cam Tv for a few years, but you can't comment on it so logged in on my computer. Watching you plant your tomatoes video. Just wanted to say you have been a great help to me. When you are ready to plant if you water you plants in the cups 20 minutes before you start. Then when you are ready you just turn the cup upside down a give a slight pull on the stem, and out they come. Water them from the top just a little to moisten the soil. Don't water heavy it will make a mess.

I have a very small back yard, so I use grow bags for my tomato plants. This year I am growing only dwarf tomatoes, 6 varieties. I don't like growing vine tomatoes, because they get too tall. I recently learned that indeterminate vine tomato plants can be topped off to keep it at a selected height, and new shoots will form to make the plant bushier and produce more tomatoes. My sister said her husband tops off indeterminate vine tomatoes, and they do very well. Going to try this next year.

Hi! I grow ALL my veggies and flowers in pots and I have a ton - 4 driveways full.
It’s taken me a lot of experimenting but I have it cased - for the most part. I use the large recycling blue bins - with lots of drainage holes. I grow Primo Red Tomatoes and my crop is Huge. They will give me two crops on each tomato - and weather dependent - three. And yes - fertilizer and watering is done differently in a pot. But if all you have is a driveway - then you can case the pot growing. I have lots of other tips - too many to type here. I live in Southern Saskatchewan - Canada - so our season is relatively short.

I grow in 16'' planters or 5 gal. containers. I find you can grow almost anything. I go for flavor vs yield. My favorites are a mid sized black tomato I picked up at the grocery store and saved the seeds. And the multicolor cherry/grape tomatoes I've picked up at the farmer's market. ''Sweet 100's'' do well for high yields. Rather than Roma, I go for an Amish or New Jersey paste tomatoes.

Lots of room in pots for 2 plants but no sure if it is going to get me more then 1 plant with 2 stems.

Been growing for over 10 yrs in containers..In my opinion the bigger toms need at least 15-20 gallons. I use fabric pots mostly. Cheaper than other containers. Cherry & anything that will get more than 4 ft need that. Ive grown yellow pear, black cherry & a orange cherry type. They grow & grow & used mostly the teepee trellis. I also used a metal sheet used for concreate. But it rusts. Purple reign did well. Gets about 4-5 ft & has beef steaks. Taste great. Tiny tim is a small cherry that produces alot & only gets 1-2 ft. Could be grown in 5 gal or less. Even grown inside under grow lights. The self watering planters are a good option too as containers dry out quickly.

I agree with your choices and suggestions. My Sungold was great. However my daughter grew it in ground and it grew over 30’ !!! It overwintered for two years. The amount of fruit was ridiculous! I have a picture of this monstrosity to prove it, Brian.

Due to age, we only grow in containers or a raised bed. I do determinate tomatoes in 5 gal buckets, but indeterminate tomatoes in 10 gal bags. I use a moisture sensing meter for watering which I have not heard you mention.

I wish I knew which of my tomato plants were which. My seedling green house went took a trip across the yard in high winds.. the plants I saved no longer had labels so.. I have about 20 mystery plants. I had planned to put the indeterminates in the ground and the others in pots.. now I'm going all in pots... or grow bags, the biggest of them is 15 gallons.

Container tomato: Fantastico Grape Tomato (transplant 50 days / seed 90 days. F1 hybrid. Purchased a start from a nursery last year. The plant only grew about 10" tall, but produced abundant grape tomatoes from July until an early frost in late September. Description: "2014 AAS Winner. Long cluster of bright red, super-sweet fruits with a Brix of 12 grow in clusters toward the outside of plants make then very easy to harvest. In trial, fruits resisted cracking much better than similar varieties when left of the vine past maturity. High yielding plants produce up to 12 lbs of 1/2 oz fruits. Bred for growing in small gardens - perfect in large patio containers or hanging baskets. Determinate."

I tried growing Roma in a 5 gallon grow bag, and had so much blossom end rot due to the bags drying out too quickly (despite me watering daily). Found out too late that paste-type tomatoes are especially susceptible to BER ☹️

Hi Brian, if I have pots where I grew tomatoes I imagine I need to use new soil for new tomatoes right? Can I reuse the old soil for other vegetables like zucchini or peppers? I would think I’d have to use something like 420 Recharge. ?

My very 1st attempt at growing tomatoes. I was ridiculously successful! I had an INSANE amount of fruits.
I had so many I to give most away. I was hooked. The following season, same amount of plants. NO luck, just a handful
of fruit. I've been a sub here to find what went wrong. Learning a few things here!

I liked growing cherry tomatoes in a 20 inch size container. My biggest issue is that it has been windy for the last couple of years & it tends to fall to the ground. I have 7 big containers in the middle of my yard on concrete. Any advice to avoid falling onto the ground? I don't like cherry tomatoes in the ground. It grew wild. Can't keep up with pruning

Hi Brian, I noticed in the last couple of tomato videos that you recommend just letting some more string out and going straight up with the tomato vine. In your older videos, you actually rotated from one hook to the next and kept going around rotating them around the whole bed. Do you no longer do this? do you just let the vine collect at the bottom? I use your hooks but last year I rotated them from left to right and went all the way around. Do I just let the string out and keep them on the same hook that I started them on right above the plant or should I rotate them like I did before?
    Thanks in advance.

I don't think I'll grow oblong paste tomatoes in pots again. They seem to be particularly vulnerable to blossom end rot and it's very hard to keep a potted tomato from drying out. Inconsistent soil moisture leads to poor calcium movement from the soil to the tomato and thus to blossom end rot. I've got 2 Sungolds in pots this year and am really looking forward to them!

I accidentally found "Cloudy Day" last year that I grew from seed and gave one to my parents that grew it in a 5 gallon pot and did really well. It is and inderminant and a medium size tomato and harvest in 50 days and makes late until first frost, which is a plus! And does need as much sun, hence cloudy day, lol. Big fan and have more growing inside now. BTW, I am using your half full cup seedling approach and it is working well!
