I suspect a possible water supply and/or pressure issue or they realized its natural gas powered and want to set up a higher flow water monitor (cannon) to get high volume onto the fire while keeping personnel farther away
Powered by pressurized natural gas... In tanks, most likely in liquid form... And they're on fire and will explode if the safety vents don't work... I would wait at least until the tanks stopped venting before going near it, but that's just me, I kinda like living 😂
The fire is being fed by compressed natural gas. You don't want to put the fire out until you can shut off or it runs out of natural gas. However they could have at least placed a fog nozzle in service to keep the fire in check.

This was a natural gas powered truck. The hissing, pow and large fireball is the natural gas. The tank heated enough to start to vent through the pressure relief valve. This is to prevent the tank from having a BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding gas explosion) . They are extremely dangerous as they produce not only a shock wave and shrapnel but extreme heat.

the pavement was melted/burnt so bad, they had to replace it!
That is a Natural Gas fueled garbage truck.. the pop and hissing is natural gas the bigger pops are the tires exploding

They eventually started spraying it with water after it burned for quite a while.

I’m guessing the “pow” and fireball was a hydraulic hose bursting and spraying onto the flame. Then keeps spraying… until the pressure is gone.
