You got to check out his footwork and see how he plants his feet and times it according to the body position of the other player and then takes advantage of them as soon as they become unbalanced. It's artwork worth studying. Makes u appreciate his jukes on an even deeper level

I swear the dude could see reality in 1.5x motion. His ability to see and react was superhuman. His run against the cowboys where 9 of their 11 man defense piled up on top of eachother, 8 feet later, 1 linebacker fell to the left as he ran right, and meanwhile the last remaining lineman standing couldn't see where he went. Touchdown. The only time I've ever seen anything in the NFL that looked like that. Literally looked like an all-pro NFL running back playing against a division 3 high school team.

I'm 63 and I've been a Packers fan since the 60's. Barry Sanders is the best running back I've ever seen. That includes the old films of Jim Brown I've watched. Barry is the GOAT.

The one great thing about watching the play in slow mo (after watching it in real time) is that he looks to be able to react in real time, while we're watching it in slow mo, while everyone else is stuck in slow mo. In real time, I tell people all the time, it's like he could see what was about to happen before it happened.

At 5:05, he's got the most spectacular 4-yard loss you'll ever see. That's why watching Barry was so great. Before each and every snap, you wondered what incredible thing he was about to do.
Yeah, I really, really would love to see a highlight film of all of his non-touchdown, non-big gain monster runs that turned what should have been 4-yard losses into 4-yard gains. That highlight video would be hours long.

I grew up watching Barry Sanders. Really no doubt in my mind who is the greatest ever at running back. This vid helps people see how special he was running.
I still get chills everytime I hear Dick Enberg's "There he goes" 9:35. That was the run immediately following the 2-3 yard run he had to break 2000 yards. I remember earlier in the game, the crowd was so loud the refs had to stop the game multiple times, threatening to take time outs from the Lions if the crowd did not settle down. One of my favorite memories as a kid watching that game.
That was the loudest game I have ever been to see. 9:21 was a TD run earlier in that game and you can hear Dick Enberg just about come out of his chair after the move Barry put on that guy. Man was he fun to watch!
The crazy thing about that game was how poor his numbers were in the first half and how many yards he had to rip off in the second half to make it happen.
He only ran for 20 yards in the first half and needed 111 in the second half just to hit 2,000.
Yes, berry was awesome, but he was a much better man than he was a football player, and that is what is important.

He was friends with a doctor I knew kids. He would go over there and play table tennis every week. The doctor was a man that would give you the shirt off his back. He asked to take a picture with him and Barry said he would but that will be the last time he would see him. That was screwed up! He also decided to not work with the team during spring training. You can't do that to a team no matter who you are. That is one of the reasons the lions did not go far with Barry running.
My son told me that Barry wouldn't be able to all this in today's league... (My son no longer lives in my house, I put him out for his blasphemes tongue! Lol!)

He had such a unique running style that no one, even now, would be able to stop. Walter Payton, who was only 200 lbs yet was still a power back, wouldn’t survive today because players are much bigger now. 200 lb power backs don’t and won’t exist now and in the future.

They've just witnessed magic. None like him.

I have not seen any running back since Barry Sanders retired who has consistently run so beautifully, gracefully, and electrifying. I know there's some running backs who have tried to mimic and apply his style, but nobody has come close to Barry Sanders on the field. Hands down, my all-time favorite running back.

Once in a lifetime talent. Glad I was able to witness him growing up. (Though I am a GB fan, I can appreciate greatness when I see it). Wish him and Favre didn't have to share that MVP. Imho, Barry won it hands down that year.

Look up walter payton (the younger years 1975-1979) and( older years 80-87) now those were as impressive as the sanders runs!

We all know the breakout runs Barry is famous for: 1) The "spin the defender" against the Pats, 2) the 8-tackle breaker against the Bears, and 3) the "which way did he go" against the Cowboys... just to name a few. But what are Barry's best short yardage runs of all time? Here are my new top 3:
2:55 -against the Vikings. The "spin double step back" for about 10 yards. That's some cartoon sh*t.
7:03 -against the Browns. The "rotate reset" for about 25 yards. Mmmmhh.
4:09 -against the Redskins. The "spin collider" for 15. How do you use a spin move to make 2 defenders collide behind you? Come on man...

Fast, agile, powerful, but above all, humble. People always say "Look at the records, he doesn't have the most yards or TD's" yada yada yada... First of all, Emmitt Smith had to play nearly twice the number of seasons, and had the most stacked o-line to make that possible. Secondly, having your name on those records doesn't matter that much, it's how a player's individuality effects the game. MJ doesn't have the most points or best FG%, Gordie Howe doesn't have the most goals or points, etc. I think Barry's the best RB of all time because of his ability to make you stand up practically every time he touched the ball.

I am sure people that didn't even like football stopped to watch Barry play. I'm not a big basketball fan but I stopped to watch MJ play. Barry was top notch. It wasn't a matter of if but when he would break loose.

Yup, as unbelievable as his acceleration was, he gets chased down from behind when he's in the clear so many times. He probably would have had another 10 touchdowns if he could have just stayed ahead.
He was extremely fast... EXCEPT when his short stride length became a disadvantage. Acceleration: blazing. Change of direction: blazing. 40 time: blazing. Jumping: insane (At 5’8” he could stand flat footed underneath a basketball hoop and dunk). His top gear though was merely above average. But for a running back it’s more about the three cone drill.
Hands down, his playoff touchdown run against Dallas was the greatest moment of his career!
Should of had some of those crazy runs where he makes the entire defense miss while he's pinned in the backfield and somehow manages to gain yardage when every other RB would have lost ten yards. He was the king of that kind of play as well.

Will people please stop holding on this archaic notion that Jim Brown is the greatest RB of all-time? Because it isn't even close. Brown in Barry's era or today's era would have been good, maybe great, but it wouldn't have been nearly as dominant, because in Brown's day he was a 235lb back playing against defenders that didn't even weigh 200lbs. Barry on the other hand, would be dominant in any era. Period!

I absolutely love the fact that he carried the heart of Detroit, and the whole team knew it. After almost every run, all the lineman and other members of the team ran to help him up off the ground. I have never seen any other team do that for just one player.
He was the best, even if Barry was too humble to own it, the team knew it and owned it for him by show of respect.
People always like to dismiss his blocking due to his zig zag style. But check out the play at 7:31, completely dominant blocking on that one.

I was blessed to be able to watch his entire career as he played for the LIONS.. went & watched him live at least once per season! Only player ever that you had to hold your breath every time he touched the ball. Didn't dare to leave the TV room for nothing if Detroit was on offense! These videos are great, but I feel sorry for people who never got to watch him play during his career. Every single time he touched the ball you just knew he could break one & take it to the house! # 20 - there'll never be another that even comes close!

It didn't matter what team you rooted for in the 90s. I grew up an Oilers fan with Warren Moon. But when the Lions were on national TV, you watched because of Barry Sanders. He made some great players look like amateurs the way he ran.
Being from Detroit my dad got to meet Barry after his last game. My dad worked at chicken shack and after the last game in his career he went to the same chicken shack my dad worked at.

He really had it all : seemingly from first step acceleration at top speed , open field speed , amazing agility , strength , moves , toughness, etc. Really amazing is when his knee , even his whole body would be an inch from the ground and his strong arm and hand on the turf would push him back up to running at full speed again .

Born & raised in metro Detroit. My younger years I was a 49er fan. Mainly because of Montana and Roger Craig. But as Im in my 40's now, I never appreciated how much Barry Sanders meant to the sport. So very classy, humble and always had humility, hell, he still does. Videos don't lie, this man did things running backs nowadays just don't do. He didnt showboat, didn't talk to the media. None of that bullshit. He respects the game, scored, gave the ref the ball. And went on as if it's just honorable.

Yup, I commented on that particular run also, the most overlooked, impossibly spectacular run of all time. Probably just does not get its props because it was only for 10 yards, but what a 10 yards!

I CAN'T get tired of watching these old clips. Back when we saw these in real time though, the emotion was indescribable. I don't know if there was ever a game that he didn't pull off an incredible run, and when the shouting died it down turn to laughter. I can remember us all laughing; I guess it was due to adrenaline pumping at witnessing something impossible. He was a joy to watch.

Incorrect. Tampa Bay was the worst organization at the time and had been for 25 years. Barry played on THE NUMBER ONE OFFENSIVE TEAM IN FOOTBALL IN 1995 AND THE NUMBER 2 OFFENSIVE TEAM IN 1997!! Emmitts offense never finished higher than 4th. Barry was awesome. The best open field runner of all time. He DID NOT DO IT ALONE!! the defensive players don't have anything to do with the offense. Especially with the run and shoot offense which ran otherworldly with a back like Barry in the backfield.
And no, Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover owe their 'pro bowl' and 'all pro' status much more to Barry then he does to them. He made them look way better then they were. The run and shoot is absolutely dependent on the RUN part. Nothing works without it and Barry opened it up to new things not thought possible before. He WAS the offense for almost all of his career.
As far as Tampa Bay goes, i was not talking about at the time. I was talking about in general. The Lions were garbage since old man ford assumed majority ownership back in 1963, way before the bucs were even a glimmer in the NFL's eye. Even with the GOAT on that team they could only manage one playoff win. If that's not terrible ownership and management i don't know what is. 1 playoff win since 1957. The record speaks for itself.

He had a great team around him which is why they beat the Cowboys multiple times. He had the best receiving tandem in the league and the best QB in 1995. Kevin Glover made three straight PBs at Center and Lomas Brown made 7 straight PBs and a couple all pros as well as playing 20 years in the NFL.
Love watching him Gallup ...every third step in stride he pushes ...you can see his heart beat with the rhythm of his pace. GOAT.
