I did the Oregon state 100km TTT in about 1992. We lost 1 guy at 25km, and another at 50km. We did a 2 man 50km TTT after that and got 2nd... I remember being crushed!
@@iceicebaby6980 Ha! Well, that's honest! I'm surprised they let you finish with 1. Usually there is a minimum # of finishers that have to stay together.
100k ttt was the best. If you've never done one, you owe it to yourself to get your mates and try it out. Toughness, teamwork, sacrifice, it has it all.
I recall the Dutch Team from Mexico 1968 with Joop Zoetemelk, Jan Krekels, Fedor den Hertog, and René Pijnen. I remember the Swedish Petterson brothers (all 4 of 'm!). Bring back this fantastic Team Time trial !!!
Great how the US commentary beforehand says how the bike technology has evened everything up, so it comes down to fitness of the riders, while the Aussie commentators spend the race pointing out how the US (aero bars) & EG (Kevlar lightweight) bikes give them such an advantage over everyone else. It was the bike tech that won it!
haha yes. They were ahead of the times though introducing the tt bars a year before Lemond used them to win the TDF. Certainly changed cycling for good.
I raced in the Tour of Turkey with 2 of the Soviet guys... great guys and strong as all hell. One of them Vladimir won the sprint competition.. They had the world record that year, but got silver. I think the Germans won because of the bikes. Impressive machines
Best time in cycling, with the coolest bikes. I still have my Eddy Merckx with 24" Front wheel and a East German Racingsuite, which I got from Jens Heppner in exchange for some car speakers back in 1989 ...
50kmph over 100km time trial is insane. Image one of those guys fast forward to present time and did a single 40km stage on a present bike. They would eat the road up.
There was a lot more diversity in how people positioned themselves on the bike back then. Rule changes and wind tunnel testing means everybody pretty much looks the same on the bike now.
They all doped the same that time. The difference is, that east germany was the only professional and focused to win country in that time. It was all organised to be successful.
1988 you could buy a Colnago 753 frame for about £250-300 and about the same again, maybe a bit more for campag record or dura ace (or AX). Great times.
Back then the TT bikes were also pretty expensive and disc wheels way more expensive than regular ones. Inflation in general, and more dentists on bicycles, have driven prices up.
@@huubvankesteren4185 Agree I see a lot of people on road bikes that are only buying these high end bikes because they are lightweight they can't ride a 10+kg bike at the speeds of 6.8kg bikes. This is why the prices of bikes have gone up because there is now a higher demand got the higher end bikes.

How to inflict the maximum pain and suffering on your teammates, without dropping them.
What a great description. The TTTs I've done are by far the worst I've ever suffered on a bike.
