Thank you for reminding us of this brave man Donald Campbell he pushed the boundaries of speed records and paid with his life. K7 the original boat is fascinating, she has jet engines achieving 202 mph. That was just his first attempt. The last run was fatal when he achieved 300 mph. What a story. Thank you Hugo for reporting on a historical event and the boat and Donald Campbell.
Coniston (town) is just a few miles up the road from me (as the bird flies, the water is closer). My parents watched Donald make one if his practice runs but didn't watch on the day it all went wrong. Donald and people like him are fearless pioneers. I wonder what impact they have actually had on science and engineering 🤔. Bigger than we think, I imagine. I worked for a company in Ulverston that made the sonar equipment that was used to find the wreck of Bluebird.
Interesting. My Auntie had a house on sunny Bank Torver. I'd often sail over to peel Island & play shallows & amazon's. Later powerboating on Windermere. I'd often eat & drink in 'The sun' pub where his initial 'fag packet' sketches were made with 'uncle'. His jag steering wheel sat on the wall. Pity when I revisited the sun it had lost all trace of its place in history & the staff were clueless..

It's a shame things like that are discarded but as is usual with Lake District hostelries, they're bought and sold regularly by speculators from afar and run/staffed by foreigners quite often, that have no knowledge and don't care about local history.

Bluebird has been run on water since the restoration, at Loch Fad on Bute - I think the speed obtained was about 150 mph.
