      I like this helplessness of Daemon in Harrenhall because that is so him: he’s a war machine and the Riverlands demand more of a negotiator and he’s so ready to jump on his dragon and threaten people and do things but just like Rhaenyra he can’t. He’s completely lost because he’s good at confrontation and fight and these are not required right now where he is.

      I've seen people say the harrenhal plotline is starting to turn into "what I assume it would be like if Gendry's boat ride was turned into an actual subplot." (top r/television comment)
      I don't think it's THAT bad, but it does start to be a bit dull, there's no plot or exposition there, so it just drags on for angsty daemon vibes

    It's only slow because streaming services have destroyed people's attention spans by cramming everything into 8 episodes, sometimes even less, just darting from plot point to plot point, giving nothing but a hollow experience. What people these days call "filler" is what character development and world-building used to be about.

    • @Morfe02
      @Morfe02 หลายเดือนก่อน +67

      Sorry but episode 2 or 3 are filler because Rhaenyra doesnt nothing except going to Church 😂😂😂
      Like this THIS IS where i get mad because they didnt use the black council to show the opinions of the 3-4 guys there
      I would like to hear about the Maester Geraldys or any queenguard because IDONTKNOW WHAT THEY THINK you know character develop about side ones like the Green council does after the new Hand
      But they waste time showing how they "do nothing" meanwhile Cole is destroying all the castles
      Also with Daemon happens something similar we meet Óscar Tully (good) but we are 24/7 with Willem Blackwood instead of showing the 3 important characters of the Blackwoods that basically made all the battles of the book in Riverlands and more
      But no they show nothing until episode 6 you know 6 of 8 i would show them in episode 3 !!! With the Bracken Battle of the burning mill

      I too personally want S3 and the rest of S2 to do literally nothing other than have every character hallucinate every episode. Like, let's literally just make everyone trip all season. Aemond's sapphire eye infects him, making him delirious and hallucinate. Alicent's moon teas have side effects, making her delirious and hallucinate. Criston Cole turns crispy, making him delirious and hallucinate. Aegon is badly burnt and dreaming, making him delirious and hallucinate. Daemon exists, making him delirious and hallucinate. Willem Blackwood has PTSD over killing a man when he was a child, making him delirious and hallucinate. Daeron The Daring doesn't exist, making him delirious and hallucinate. Ulf and Alf bond with their dragons, making them delirious and hallucinate. Alyn Velaryon is black now, making him delirious and hallucinate. Corlys Velaryon is alone, making him delirious and hallucinate. Rhaenyra keeps receiving sexist comments from men and is a they/them irl while portraying a female character, traumatising her which makes her delirious and thus hallucinate.
      That's what the entirety of the show should be. Absolute peak cinema. Pure character focus and buildup to stick it to the Gen Z kids who don't have attention spans! Yeah!

    • @jaythementalist
      @jaythementalist หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Yeah the problem is those scenes aren't that interesting compared to "things happening" in the early seasons of GOT. In GOT, scenes had multiple purposes aside from advancing the plot, but also deepened characterization, had emotional range, and were otherwise deeply memorable years later. Jace meeting with the Freys technically advances the plot but isn't particularly memorable or dramatic. Daemon having trippy visions or meeting with Blackwoods and Brackens is boring because we don't care about any of those other people. All these fucking small council scenes are becoming monotonous and tiresome.
      So when people the episode is slow, they don't mean it lacks battles per se, but there just wasn't anything dramatic or interesting to keep us on the edge of our seats.

    I felt the episode was fine, until I learned that this season only has 8 episodes. I thought we were just half way, so I was fine with the show taking it's time and being slow, but now that I know that we are more than half way through I'm a bit more frustrated with the pacing. I feel like there is still so much stuff that needs to happen in this season and will either be rushed by the end, or pushed for the next one, and to have that happen so that we can watch Daemon get high for the tenth time in this season, and rhaenyra being disrespected by her council AGAIN, and Alicent being frustrated with the outcome of her actions AGAIN, is just really disappointing. The moment I learned that there are 8 episodes the seasons immediately went from like a 9/10 for me, to an 8 or even a 7.

I felt bored because some scenes were less interesting or were rendered uninteresting by the way the scene was written. At times this show makes the choice to focus on something less dramatic while glossing over opportunities for more entertaining drama. For example, an actual full scene with Halaena confronting Aemond in the throne room would have been a far better use of the show’s time than the Rhaena and Lady Arryn tit for tat about the size of the Dragon’s.

    Let’s be honest, if David and Dan were credited as writers everyone would be hating this season.
    We’ve had some poor writing thus far.
    Blood and Cheese infiltrate King's Landing and kill the Queen's son with implausible ease, zero security concerns or conflict
    Rhaenyra infiltrates King's Landing, where she gets within inches of Alicent with a plan for peace, her plan fails but Alicent lets her go…. Zero consequences? And she gets back to DragonStone safely?
    Daemon goes from the most badass character in the story, to tripping balls for 4 straight episodes in a castle. Doing absolutely nothing.
    Aside from Episode 4, the show has been a slow burn, repetitive dialogue with minimal suspense.
    I think the biggest issue I have is there are zero “great” characters this season. When you think of GOT, the line up of great characters experiencing intense crisis is endless and we the fans are 100% emotionally invested at the edge of our seat. I think Season 1 established King Viserys as a great character. But I have not had the emotional connection with season 2 characters.
    Lastly, I don’t think this season is bad. I’m still all in, however, I’m just exposing the hypocrisy on how pple praise HOTD but shit on seasons 5-8 of GOTS.

    The only conflict we had with the blacks since Daemon's departure, has been the council grumbling against Rhaenyra, but even that felt toned down as they tended to hang their heads in abashed silence as soon as Rhaenyra or Rhaenys said anything back to them.
    The Corlys/Rhaenyra fallout after Rook's Rest was explosive in the books and even temporarily ended their alliance. Why didn't we get that, how does that make sense as a writing decision?
    And about Rhaenys, didn't she blame Rhaenyra for what happened to Laenor? What happened to that? Why were they suddenly besties this season? Wouldn't it have been much more interesting if Rhaenys supported Rhaenyra in the council becasue she supported her approach, but still hated her in private, giving a unique dynamic to their relationship the past few episodes? It could even have served as a justification for Rhaenyra to not trust Rhaenys enough to make her Hand.
    And what if we got some more conflict between Jace and Rhaenyra? Rhaenyra screwed everything up essentially and Jace obviously was aware of it, but after criticizing her he just immediately accepted Rhaenyra's argument about "seeking peace at any cost", even though it didn't make much sense.
    It's as if there were many seeds of good, believable conflict there, and the writers just chose to ignore them or let them end anticlimactically.

    I agree with you that the writers are *trying* to build characters up. But I think the main issue with this season is that the three most important characters have done next to nothing. Sure, Daemon had the son killed. But he wasn’t even in that scene. So his character actually hasn’t done anything of note on screen. Besides sneaking to kings landing, Rhaenyra has been talking about what she can’t do all season. And Alicent actually hasn’t done anything of note, like at all.
    I guess the point I’m trying to make is that character development is driven by *action* at its core. Dialogue is a big part of it; but it’s how the dialogue drives the character to act, ultimately.

    My problem with the Game Of Thrones comparison is that it's inevitable, most of the people watching don't know much about the books, they just wanted more Game Of Thrones. I feel like the writers understand this and are trying their best to split the plot between as many POVs as they can, but when these are missing from the source it starts to feel a little forced and predictable, these characters were never meant to be deeply analyzed. The Dance Of The Dragons boils down to: "An incompetent king fumbled his succession and then a bunch of terrible people fought for the throne and then most of the Dragons died". You kinda know what to expect from every character every time they appear on screen. Daemon tripping balls in Harrenhall is cool, but now, every time it cuts to him you think "geez, I wonder what he'll be allucinating this time and what ominous shit Alys is gonna tell him!". Wouldn't one solid episode focused on him, filled with dream sequences and going deep within his psyche, Sopranos style, be better? Probably, but that wouldn't be like Game Of Thrones, and this is way the series is dragging.

    I thought it was a good episode and had interesting scenes BUT I’m kinda getting tired of the dream sequences. I never thought I would be bored by Alys Rivers scenes and was so excited to see how they would handle her before the season started but now those scenes are becoming redundant. Specifically when Daemon dreams like the one of him and his mother. I found the scene of Rhaenyra and her small council redundant as well. How many times are they gonna show us that the men in the small council disagree with her or think she is weaker because she’s a woman? Or that Rhaenyra wants to take her dragon to fight but is stuck at Dragonstone? Like, we get it! There’s so much cool sh*t that happened in the book that they’re just not showing us and it’s not really justified because not all the scenes they do include in this episode are needed IMO. There are a few scenes in this episode that should’ve definitely been cut and replaced with a Bracken vs Blackwood fight scene instead because the scenes they did show don’t add much to the story and were quite slow. I’m not the type of person who needs battles, explosions and dragons every episode but it just feels like the development of this war is very slow. Sometimes I forget that a war is even happening because so much of it is off screen. It’s also not very interesting to watch characters like Daemon do nothing. The most action we saw out of him was chopping wood and threatening men on his dragon and then basically having no response to their treasonous statements. Why TF did he even bring Caraxes there if he’s not gonna use him? For the life of me, I cant understand why the writers thought portraying Rhaenyra and Daemon as cautious with using violence would be more entertaining to fans. Her stance on the war and her behavior really hasn’t changed much at all from the start which makes me wonder why she looked intensely into the camera in the season 1 finale, leading fans to believe we’d see her snap and contribute to a violent, bloody war. I feel kinda clickbaited there. I enjoy seeing that fire in her like when she spotted Luke’s dragon on the beach and came flying down, crashing into people with a disregard for their safety. I loved that scene but it seems the show runners don’t want to portray Rhaenyra in a negative light. She’s practically a pacifist. I was just a tad bored during the Dragonstone and Harenhall scenes this time around. I just hope this is all building up to something special and that it will be later revealed how necessary all the slower scenes shown were. I’d love to be proven wrong on that. The episode wasn’t bad and actually started off quite great but it was such a drop off in excitement compared to the last episode. After about the halfway mark, I started losing interest a bit. My favorite parts were the Kings Landing scenes like the scenes of burnt Aegon, Aemond gaining power, and the scene of Alicent and the small council. I also enjoyed the scene between Baela and Corlys. All of those scenes were EXCELLENT. But the rest was just meh IMO. Not bad, but not particularly interesting either. Anyway, still a good episode. But like I said, it definitely would’ve benefited from a Bracken vs Blackwood altercation of some sort. Do the writers not realize how excited book fans are to see altercations between these two houses?! Because a lot of it is off screen which is annoying me just a bit because I was looking forward to seeing them destroy each other. But my main issue is with Rhaenyra who I would like to see more enraged or at the very least, change from what she’s experienced. Her throne was usurped, her son and Rhaenys were brutally killed and Rhaenyra also came an inch of being assassinated. And yet, her stance on the war and her behavior has pretty much remained the same. If those events didn’t make her more aggressive or unhinged then what will? I know it sounds like I’m not enjoying the show but I really am. It’s just that these little issues are starting to pile up and annoy me just a bit. There is still a chance that the season will wrap up nicely and that my concerns will be addressed so that’s what I’m hoping for.

    Am I the only one whose main problem with this season is that it feels like it has no soul (caused by Viserys' absence)?

    • @valenciasaintilus9573
      @valenciasaintilus9573 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you!! This show feels incredibly shallow. It lacks substance. Its dialogue feels weak and unnatural. It feels like a group of fans came together and started making things up about the canon. Even when they are talking about the possibility of non Targaryens being able to ride dragons feels off and feels like fan fiction.

    • @celeste7987
      @celeste7987 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@valenciasaintilus9573 I don't disagree that season 1 seemed more "soulful." But people outside of House Targaryen riding dragons is not "like fan fiction" if it happens in the book.

    • @valenciasaintilus9573
      @valenciasaintilus9573 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@celeste7987 the fan fiction was a queen dressing up as a nun to speak to another queen. The fan fiction isn’t the fact that other people besides Targaryens can ride dragons but how the information was delivered. Jace basically winks at the camera and says “ of course non Targaryen’s can ride dragons, all those works were written by supremacists who were trying to cement their superiority over others” like huh. It wasn’t a “ what if” or a mystery to him. He grew up in this societal structure of the supremacy of his family and I guess just deconstructed ? I felt like in real world when something that has been an accepted fundamental truth of the world is questioned it takes a lot more to dismantle it. Like when the dragon meleys was killed and her head paraded through the town, the towns people didn’t just go “ well of course you can kill a dragon duh”. No the boy was confused and said “ I thought the dragons were Gods”. They had to question the status qou, they started to deconstruct their reality. I didn’t see that with rhaenyra and Jace, all I heard with that dialogue was fanfiction/fanservice.

    They left the king without medical atention gor about a whole 10 to 15 days, the time they took to march from Rook's rest to Kings landing. I'm convinced the writers, do not understan geography or the world they're trying to cr3ate a story in. The show is not garbage, but the writers have never looked at a map of westeros and every original plot point or scene falls flat.

    Die hard fans are defending this shows issues but the issues are not the battles
    It’s the characters and the pacing and the dialogue. Seasons 1-4 of GOT were great because of those things, not the battles.
    Daemons arc is ridiculous, Rhaenyra has no agency, Alicent has nothing to do, and nothing is happening. And it’s taken a huge departure from the books.
    I loved season 1, but season 2 is trash-guess why-the previous show runners are gone.

      S1 of GoT didn't even have one large scale battle, yet it was peak. S2 only had one, but was still or arguably even more peak.

    I don't think people critiquing this episode are all just people who want big battles and tons of action every episode. Personally, I just found it underwhelming in dealing with the aftermath of the insane and game-changing events from the last episode, and most of the dialogue scenes weren't nearly as compelling to me as in most HOTD episodes. To me, EP2 was a great example of an episode that deals with the aftermath of a huge event and being almost entirely dialogue-driven but still excellent because of how amazing the scenes were. In fact, the one action scene in that episode (Erryk bowl) was one of the weaker scenes of the episode to me.

    I’m shocked that people are upset with the pacing. Yet they’re the same people who are upset about the multiple time jumps. We’re in the thick of a civil war and this episode was important. It shows the aftermath and what leads each side to make the decisions that they do moving forward.

    I do like your suggestion about adding in a more dramatic and tense scene between Corlys and Rhaenrya about Rhaenys’s death.
    However, I also like how the show contrasts the Green’s reaction to Jaehaerys’s death and the Black’s reaction to Rhaenys’s. At the end of the day, grief is processed differently by different people.
