Exploring the Nature of Sicily. The Enchanting Bosco della Contessa, Buccheri, near Syracuse.

- If you want to explore the nature of Sicily, I suggest the Contessa forest, in Buccheri, in the province of Syracuse. It is one of the most spectacular forests in Sicily due to its position on the slopes of the Contessa mountain, a short distance from the village of Buscemi. The forest owes its name to the ancient owner, Countess Ventimiglia-Requisenz and is part of the vast wooded area of Buccheri.
The Contessa forest is the result of a reforestation work dating back to the sixties, when maritime pines and eucalyptus were planted which over time have mixed with the typical vegetation of the Iblei mountains. Here the nature of Sicily is embellished with mountain panoramas that are among the most scenic of the Sicilian mountains. Furthermore, the presence of archaeological remains scattered throughout the countryside, of the ancient "neviere" used for the conservation of snow and of the picturesque dry stone walls that delimit the plots of land gives the landscape an authentically Sicilian appearance.
The Contessa forest is an ideal destination for hikers and families looking for authentic contact with Sicilian nature.
To reach the Contessa wood, just take the Lentini/Carlentini exit of the A18 and follow the SP5 and then the SS124 towards Buccheri.
The trekking route is accessible to everyone, including children (even with a stroller if desired), as the route is flat, well signposted and not too long. In fact, the complete ring does not exceed 5 kilometers. Going along the path clockwise and then turning left at the first crossroads, after less than half an hour you reach the equipped area, ideal for a picnic. Continuing, you come across several panoramic points that offer spectacular views of the valleys below. You then reach the old wooden observation tower which marks the exact halfway point of the route and therefore the beginning of the return stretch, during which you will skirt a small lake surrounded by vegetation.
