  • Scratch build mandolin project.
    Been working on this one for a while. Based on plans for an "A" model mandolin with design variations from the travel guitars that I'm working on.
    The neck is Spanish Cedar, the top, back, and sides are mahogany and the tail is rosewood. The fretboard is also rosewood.
    I ordered the wood from Hibdon Hardwoods. They have a section for deals on their website. As I develop my Lutherie skills, I try not to spend too much money on instrument materials. I did go with decent Grover tuners which was a good choice. They are accurate and stable.

      Thank you Bob. Learning so much from the scratch builds. Mandolin Month is running into becoming Mandolin Quarter 2020.

    Very interesting, looks a bit like a Martin Travel guitar. Way to build yourself a very fun instrument.

      Thanks so much for your kind words. We have a leather craftsman friend in Rhodes. Let’s keep building instruments, but don’t hurry!

    Interesting method to get the neck angle. Put a limp balloon in the sound hole and then blow it up when it's inside and it'll keep paint out of the inside of the body.

      Thanks for the idea on the balloon. Perfect solution. I had good luck with neck angle process.

    Enjoyed seeing this build, I'm a grumpy old guy that thought of making a backpack/traveling guitar into a headless mandolin. Your vid is an awesome project that shows the possibilities, just got to jump and get your talent for mine! Great job.

      Haven't tried any headless guitars yet. Great idea to adapt headless design to mandolin. Appreciate the positive feedback. I added links to the free plans from Harpkit in the video description.

    Cute little mando, there, my friend. I would have made the body volume just a little bigger to match the air volume of an A-5. It wouldn't sound quite so tinny, but I like the way it looks. Something Mr. Spock might have played on early Star Trek or Data on later episodes. Cool!!! And thanks -- ain't luthiery a fun endeavor. Great gifts for future Chris Thile or Sierra Hull types. Bob

      Thanks, Bob for the encouraging note. It is a little plunky and trebly. I lost height on the sides when leveling down. Learning as we go. And yes, luthiery is super fun. Good tip to get more volume on the next one. Live long and prosper.

      I took the Harpkit mandolin plans and adapted the Trekker guitar shape to it. Really happy with the sound and wider neck. Will have to look at the Martin for improvements on the next build.

    Can top of the mandolin be build with more than 2 wooden piece?

    • @TheAngryMushroom
      @TheAngryMushroom  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could glue two narrow halves together similar to how guitar tops are made. I did single piece since this mandolin is very small and painted black. If I want natural wood finish, I would consider two pieces book matched for the top and back. Thanks for watching.

    Natural finish would have looked better. Nice work.

      Thanks for checking it out. I think the next one with a deeper body will work out well with a clear finish too.
