Thanks Mike (even though I'm sure you'll never see this). On March 15th 2017 I finally beat this game. You helped a shit ton. it only took me 26 years!!!!
20:10 Probably wasn't a good idea to have the Ninja Turtles logo stamped on the freaking door of the secret hideout! No wonder Shredder found Splinter!
got this for Christmas , so many years ago , don't have it anymore , going to buy a retro machine and this game again. thank you for playing this Mike and allowing me to relive my childhood. You Rock.
This is one of my all time favorite games, yet being as I had it when I was 6 it was impossible to beat!!!!! Feels good to see the end after over 20 years even if it wasn't me who beat it! Great job man!
Watching this made me so nervous. Those sewer jumps ruined my life as a kid. I still have no beaten this game, and it was one of the very few NES games that I actually owned as a kid.
brottarnacke It's not just the jumps alone, the enemies respawning as well. I know it can be done, but it is difficult. Mike is pretty good at this game, and even he is having trouble and getting frustrated at one point.
TheWisestWizards Yeah, if you retreat, they respawn when you go forwards again, it's the same in Ninja Gaiden another very hard ninja game. It's tough.
+TheWisestWizards 7 days later the neighbors call the police due to a reported smell of a rotting corpse emitting from your basement. "he was a such a nice guy....didn't see him anymore ever since he started playing that teenage mutant turtle game".
+JoannaRice Yeah that's true. But having loads of scrolls does indeed make the game a lot easier. I know I leaned on them heavily the one time I beat it.
+Jamie Rose Fun glitch in this game: you can have any projectile weapon do the same damage as the scrolls as long as one turtle posesses them. What you have to do is have your turtle throw his projectile, then switch to the turtle that has the scrolls while said projectile is still in the air. When is hits, the game thinks you threw a scoll, and will give it that damage. The scrolls must be "on" too. Basically, the game assigns the damage to whatever weapon is "equipped", not what is on the screen.
retro nerd Dark Soul series still allow you to continue. So it is only more punishing inbetween save-points. Imagine you had to start over after 3 lives.
He edited out the Save State rant lmao! Knew that would happen. "You can use save states, I'll actually accomplish something with my life, how 'bout that?" XD
+aNightmaresRequiem Why does he think its actually accomplishing something beating a game? I play games to have fun, if I want to use save states then Ill use save states. If I beat a game I dont post my "victory" on my wall of life accomplishments. I just dont get his logic.
Harrison Fennelly Technically its an accomplishment, but so is wiping your ass correctly. If beating video games is even in your top 20 list of lifes accomplishments then you need to re-evaluate your life.
+Tom Caine Your response isnt showing up here but Ill try to explain. Every other "accomplishment" you listed anyone would put ahead of beating a game. One helps animals, one would help someone overcome their fear of heights/falling. Beating a game is an accomplishment but it should not be at the top of your list of lifelong accomplishments unless you are very young.
Fill up Mike and Don with scrolls. Don't use Mike till the final stage, only use Don for long range attacks. U won't accidentily lose any scrolls by collecting other items.
+sgirardacus7 I loved it, too! I remember finally beating it and dancing to the end music. I was also the only kid who knew about the original comic. My Dad loved it dearly and introduced me.
It's actually a good idea to collect the Kiwi (Scrolls) on everyone except Don. That way you can use him as usual, and not worry about the enemy drops!
This was one of the games of my childhood. I never played the vehicle stage as a kid, yes I was that frustrated. But I was playing TMNT anyway and for me it was awesome. Thanks Mike for this longplay, it reminds me good old times.
This was a really fun and tense live stream. I'm real glad I got to see it live. It was as exciting as watching a high level gaming tournament event, especially when he overcame the impossible stuff, or narrowly dodged bullshit, or got fucked over real bad. btw I was the guy posting "You got the touch!" "You got the power!" after he beat the spikes; glad he caught the reference but he should as it turns out that's one of his favorite movies, ha!
Great play through Mike, the sense of accomplishment when you complete this game is amazing, even after all these years I still remember being so happy to finish it
My favorite turtle to use is Leonardo. Donatello has reach, but it is slow and linear. Leo's sword has an arch to it that i find more useful than a straight line.
stage 5, climbing the ladder. you can actually stand on the top of them. you can actually walk across them as long as you climb to the top. you can attack since you are standing on it.
Look up Until We Win - Bayou Billy. It's a solid walkthrough, despite being on emulator I believe. Or just play the JPN version, Mad City, and you'll find a better game all around.
Thebigredsnake I remember getting to a second god awful driving section, fighting the blues brothers, at least it looked like them. Used to have a blast thinking back.
All that grinding for scrolls when you didn't even use very many. Plus you should actually use them during parts with lots of enemies instead of just saving them all for the technodrome. Nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed this play through, great job Mike!
You can get your turtles back after they die. I lost Raph early in the game once, and he was located in one of the buildings in the next stage, tied up.
Lol he keeps insisting this is a good game. Yeah grinding for items for an hour and having to "trick the screen out" are signs of good games haha mikes got his nostalgia glasses on
+kovyiscool I have beaten this game without grinding even a fraction of the time Mike did. Mike seems fucking OBSESSED with scrolls, which are not needed to beat the game, as I have done it. Granted, I lost some turtles and had to continue once, but I still beat it. Most of the stuff Mike did was not necessary.
I never beat this game when I was a kid. As an adult I beat it a few times by getting 80 scrolls for Mike & Raph. I used Leo & Don most of the game. Two tips: Exit and re-enter rooms to collect pizzas multiple times. Also in the thin yellow hallway near the end, inching forward and ducking as soon as you see the floating soldier which makes him back away.
so maybe when i played this i was slightly better than you (not trying to be a braggart or impose some kind of machismo or something) but i did the whole thing with leo and don and then you have mike swim the dam and raph farm the scrolls. you don't need full scrolls with everyone. I think i got lucky with the rng for the technodrome (every time) but i have beat this game the last 3 times i played (it is super hard i am not denying that) there are 3 or 4 jumps that make this game very hard. I remember as a youngster i game genied this game all the time and there is like a lava pit that would make my game freeze when i was invincible (late level 3) and never beat this game till my early 20s. Love this game! Mike i like your vids. I like that you play all the way through and remain humble. Keep playing games!!!
this game has haunted me for over 20 years i had this on my nes as 5 year old , i never got past the swimming level , so thanks moke i am going to see what happens after that level cheers
The problem with so many of the viewers is that they go off the (mostly) satirical AVGN videos rather than playing the game objectively and forming their own opinions. Often times, they're particularly young as well, so they haven't ever played it either. This game is one of the harder NES titles, but it's also a good game, damn good in fact. It just has some quirks that honestly weren't atypical of games during the NES era.
+Dr.Beef well said! I was actually thinking the same thing, and returned to this video to make a comment but you beat me to it. I think this is a great game, and really a bit of a shame so many of AVGN's fanboys wont ever play these games for themselves, instead insisting they are 'shit'
JoannaRice Did Contra have a big ol' inventory of weapons? I don't hear anyone complaining about it with that game. I stand by what I said. The game is by no means perfect, but it gets dumped on far too much, often by people who have never played it. You can't rate a game by 2016 standards when it was made in 1989.
On my channel I have a video of me beating it legit in much less time than mike with no scrolls. You just need to use the screen to spawn or remove enemies for that part at the end with the space men
+dezm101 ikr i just beat it after a bout 50 tries . with hardly any scrolls. you just need about 20 each towards the end . and try a duck under those laser bastards, and them stupid robot kangaroos. and you can get scrolls technodrome.
The jump at 22:12, thanks for doing that. I remember being able to do it when I was a kid, but when I watched the AVGN video for this game he didn't try it and I thought I imagined it. Also, I understand he is not really trying to do well at the game for comic effect and whatnot. Anyway, thanks for confirming my theory that that jump can be made.
You can stand and attack if climb up to top of square block brick ladder it's like platform u can stand on top and attack whilst standing to attack the birds an spiders to get the scroll in top right hand corner
I have really bad memories of this game, because as a kid I was so excited about the game but was very disappointed that I could barely play it. Anyhow, very cool to see it being played through. I should try it again :P
This game was a pain in the ass growing up. As a kid I thought it was impossible. Now that I'm grown I wonder if I can beat it... doubt it though after watching Mike play this, LOL.
You really made it, back at 1999 when I played it for the first time, this game was impossible, not anymore (and with this video of your stream you made me see it easier, the game is hard but after watching the video I was able to beat the game with some little troubles). Great Job as always. :)
I just beat this game today, it is so good, I never got past the dam level as a kid and I really struggled today but I made it!!!! I was as nervous as Mike was at the end hahaha
I just got up in that one spot(area 3 for bullets) with Mike. Never knew you could do that. I realize I missed this convo by about a year, but I am enjoying the video.
This was a great playthrough! Seeing that it was 2.5 hours, I didn't think I'd watch the whole thing through, but it kept me captivated all the way through. Seeing the amount of life left before going in to Shredder made me think it wasn't going to happen, but he pulled it off. Bravo!
It's August 10, 2019. Watched this whole video after Cinemassacre released the TMNT movie review. Mikey, glad you beat it. I was never able to pass the turtle van part. Didn't know I needed missiles.
It took me 4 years to beat this game, from 1987-1991. It's almost disappointing to know how hard it is to get to Shredder, and to beat him all you have to do is pound him with scrolls. Anyway, I'm glad Mike played this game. AVGN always underrated this game.
How to make the game easier 1: Your jump height is controlled by how long you hold the jump button and if you are doing a forward jump, if you touch the ceiling, it takes away your momentum and you will drop straight down like a rock. 2: It's tedious as all fuck, but go into the warehouse after the dam level that has the scroll, collect and reenter the building until you have maxed out scrolls for all the turtles. 3: Go into the dam level with full health for all the turtles and use the tag team concept. When a turtle runs critical on health, quickly switch out. I prefer to let Raph and Mike do most of the swimming because they suck in the fights anyway. Even with that in mind this game is brutal without a save function. This is one of those games where if you make it to the end and lose all your power ups, you might as well hit the reset button because it would easier to try for a clean sweep instead of trying to get through the Technodrome with no secondary weapons. The turtles primary weapons suck ass once you get to the underground area with the bugs and whatever the hell they are as they take a million hits and will kill you in 2 or 3 shots.
Good job. I remember as a kid making it one time with only one turtle and I got shot with the gun instantly. Got so frustrated that I haven't played it since. That was over twenty years ago. I was the only kid take it that far. Thanks for showing, I'm going to have to put aside the pain and try it again.
15:00 That specific jump is not possible, but it is possible to make a jump of that height in places where there is only one tile to make the gap. So at ladders with the same height and the famous "you just walk over it" hole is possible to jump up to.
I distinctly remember being able to jump up the Dam wall. There's many versions of this game, some that do and don't say "Ultra Games" at the start... so I don't know if it's in different versions or if it was just a bug.
1:54:38 - I never die there. I was flabbergasted that he was so nervous about it. I wonder if it's somehow possible to get any of the items in the trap rooms.
+Alessandro Maniscalco He was just being overly cautious with his reserves. It's very common in gamers, especially those who play RPGs. Who amongst us hasn't refused to use that Megalixir in a desperate situation just in case you needed it "more" later on?
+Wrexit Knight I realize that, and I"m guilty of doing that too. I was only saying that you don't need scrolls to beat the game and certainly not has many as he had.
Thanks Mike (even though I'm sure you'll never see this). On March 15th 2017 I finally beat this game. You helped a shit ton. it only took me 26 years!!!!
Oh man im goin on 32 still haven't beat it ....now thats replay value
Hope you took a picture
20:10
Probably wasn't a good idea to have the Ninja Turtles logo stamped on the freaking door of the secret hideout! No wonder Shredder found Splinter!
But, branding is important, man!
I hate when people call TMNT a shitty game. It's an absolute classic NES game and deserves way more respect than it gets.
got this for Christmas , so many years ago , don't have it anymore , going to buy a retro machine and this game again. thank you for playing this Mike and allowing me to relive my childhood. You Rock.

Watching this made me so nervous. Those sewer jumps ruined my life as a kid. I still have no beaten this game, and it was one of the very few NES games that I actually owned as a kid.
+TheWisestWizards Just tap the jump button on the sewer jump and you'll make it every time.
brottarnacke
It's not just the jumps alone, the enemies respawning as well. I know it can be done, but it is difficult. Mike is pretty good at this game, and even he is having trouble and getting frustrated at one point.
TheWisestWizards
Yeah, if you retreat, they respawn when you go forwards again, it's the same in Ninja Gaiden another very hard ninja game. It's tough.
brottarnacke
One of these days I'm going to give it another try and not give up until I beat it.
+TheWisestWizards 7 days later the neighbors call the police due to a reported smell of a rotting corpse emitting from your basement. "he was a such a nice guy....didn't see him anymore ever since he started playing that teenage mutant turtle game".
As a kid I thought the Dam level was genuinely unbeatable. I thought the game makers just didnt want anyone to finish the game lol.
I thought I was a God when I beat the dam level in the early 90s. Never got past the turtle van level though.
***** cool z like cool z from shenmue 2?
+GT6SuzukaTimeTrials Yeah that Turtle Van map was huuuuged and it was a mystery for me how to beat it lol
+DreamcastGuy That's what the iron maiden in the airport level is for. Asshole level design.
schjonicus That part is actually before the dam.
I've completed the game with a Game Genie and the Technodrome was still hard as hell, so conglaturation for beating it!
You must get scrolls to stand a chance.
You have my support.
My sister's name is Jamie Rose but I know she didn't write that...
+Freeze Townsend Your sister was cloned in a secret laboratory. =P
+JoannaRice Yeah that's true. But having loads of scrolls does indeed make the game a lot easier. I know I leaned on them heavily the one time I beat it.
+Jamie Rose I hear if you enter the Konami Code, Scrolls becomes a playable character.
+Jamie Rose Fun glitch in this game: you can have any projectile weapon do the same damage as the scrolls as long as one turtle posesses them. What you have to do is have your turtle throw his projectile, then switch to the turtle that has the scrolls while said projectile is still in the air. Basically, the game assigns the damage to whatever weapon is "equipped", not what is on the screen.
I remember getting this game for xmas in 1989. Absolutely love this game.
2:27:45 - modern games never makes me nervous. Old NES games do.
That is why modern Games suck. And will destroy whole business.
Because he is truly nervous that he will fail the boss-fight and have to start the game over. No Quick-save. No retry.
*****
Did you even watch the video?
u should try dark souls series
retro nerd
Dark Soul series still allow you to continue. So it is only more punishing inbetween save-points. Imagine you had to start over after 3 lives.
He edited out the Save State rant lmao! Knew that would happen. "You can use save states, I'll actually accomplish something with my life, how 'bout that?" XD

+Chris Roseberry because beating a game is an acomplishment
Harrison Fennelly Technically its an accomplishment, but so is wiping your ass correctly. If beating video games is even in your top 20 list of lifes accomplishments then you need to re-evaluate your life.

Not sure what you mean by that, maybe try some reading comprehension next time.
+Tom Caine Your response isnt showing up here but Ill try to explain. Every other "accomplishment" you listed anyone would put ahead of beating a game. One helps animals, one would help someone overcome their fear of heights/falling. Beating a game is an accomplishment but it should not be at the top of your list of lifelong accomplishments unless you are very young.
i love the sound of that dam nes controller. music to my ears.
Jesus wow. I could never finish the technodrome. By the time I got there, I was on the edge of death.
Dude I never even got to the technodrome before I would always die too soon lol..one of the toughest NES games to beat for sure
Use game genie and scrolls that should help
Fill up Mike and Don with scrolls. Don't use Mike till the final stage, only use Don for long range attacks. U won't accidentily lose any scrolls by collecting other items.
Nice Mike. You should do a Little Nemo playthrough sometime.
+sgirardacus7 Loved that game as a kid. Still have all my old games too. Thanks for the reminder.
+sgirardacus7 I loved it, too! I remember finally beating it and dancing to the end music. I was also the only kid who knew about the original comic. My Dad loved it dearly and introduced me.
Yeah, the game is pretty good. It gets tough though, I had to use a Game Genie to beat it. I still have the movie on VHS too.
+HowDoUPlay cheater.
+sgirardacus7 Oh man Mike should definitely do it, one of the best NES games for sure.
Good old intense gaming moment at 1:55:50. Then that sense of accomplishment afterwards. LOL. Classic Mike.
It's actually a good idea to collect the Kiwi (Scrolls) on everyone except Don. That way you can use him as usual, and not worry about the enemy drops!
You are a genius!
The gameplay is pretty deep for a nes game. Subtel differences between turtles, additional weapons, character switching? Quite impressing.
This game is extremely hard and Mike is killing it
This was one of the games of my childhood. I never played the vehicle stage as a kid, yes I was that frustrated. But I was playing TMNT anyway and for me it was awesome. Thanks Mike for this longplay, it reminds me good old times.
This was a really fun and tense live stream. I'm real glad I got to see it live. It was as exciting as watching a high level gaming tournament event, especially when he overcame the impossible stuff, or narrowly dodged bullshit, or got fucked over real bad.
btw I was the guy posting "You got the touch!" "You got the power!" after he beat the spikes; glad he caught the reference but he should as it turns out that's one of his favorite movies, ha!
love how interactive mike is on his uploads!
A scroll is a scroll
And a roll is a roll
If we don't get no scrolls,
Then we don't eat no rolls
They call me little john, but dont let the name fool you, in real life im very big😂
Excellent playthrough. Beat this game back in 90'. I still have it. I should go for it again now!
you've inspired me to beat this game. thank you mike
Docta Wahwee did you do it?
Great play through Mike, the sense of accomplishment when you complete this game is amazing, even after all these years I still remember being so happy to finish it
You had to FARM to beat this game?. Haha no wonder i never beat this game :P
I'd have never thought of that as a 5-10yo kid at the time.
You don't have to farm, but it makes it a lot easier.
farming is just another word for grinding...final fantasy
IRPOct18 ya exactly what I thought. No way I would have known
orlando moyah very good point!!
One of the weirdest things about this game when I was a kid was; how can they swim for the dam stage, yet get swept away in the sewer where they live?
Dams are pools of clear water. Sewers are rivers of shit.
My favorite turtle to use is Leonardo. Donatello has reach, but it is slow and linear. Leo's sword has an arch to it that i find more useful than a straight line.
Mike, your livestreams are the best! Thanks for helping me get through the workday!
stage 5, climbing the ladder. you can actually stand on the top of them. you can actually walk across them as long as you climb to the top. you can attack since you are standing on it.
I'd love to see a full Bayou Billy run. I actually had it as a kid and like TMNT it was hard as hell.
Look up Until We Win - Bayou Billy. It's a solid walkthrough, despite being on emulator I believe. Or just play the JPN version, Mad City, and you'll find a better game all around.
Jim26D Exactly it's a respectable challenge and it's one of those few games that was side scrolling and had zapper parts...and then miserable driving.
Thebigredsnake I remember getting to a second god awful driving section, fighting the blues brothers, at least it looked like them. Used to have a blast thinking back.
Man, this took me WAY back! (gameplay and roars of frustration, too).
Donny does no wrong!! Nice work, Mike!
Shredder is the easiest boss in most of Nintendo's library. That's without the scrolls.
I didn't now u need the scrolls to get powerful no wonder I couldn't beat the technadrom. Awesome game play Mike 😊🤘
Who else is in his late thirties, early forties?
Early thirty's for me, grew up on Snes
40 👍🏿

All of us
Here 😊
Gotta love the "overworld" music in this game
+Coffera The whole game has a great soundtrack. Love it!
- Mike
+Cinemassacre the music at the dam was epic...
All that grinding for scrolls when you didn't even use very many. Plus you should actually use them during parts with lots of enemies instead of just saving them all for the technodrome.
Nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed this play through, great job Mike!
I never knew about scrolls till this video. Never beat that game but beated all other Ninja Turtles games!
"Hey, it's Raph."
"Yeah, a little too Raph."
You can get your turtles back after they die. I lost Raph early in the game once, and he was located in one of the buildings in the next stage, tied up.
I forgot how awesome this sountrack was. Thanks for beating this game. Been haunting me since childhood since I always died at the Technodrome.

too much time banging chicks

greatest victory dance I've ever seen lol.
Mike your the man
The jump at 22:12, thanks for doing that.
He keeps using Donatello in places where he would be better off with Leonardo.
You can just walk over it.
I would LOVE to see an NES "Gunsmoke" play through. That game was great.
I beat this game using saved states. No shame.
I have really bad memories of this game, because as a kid I was so excited about the game but was very disappointed that I could barely play it. Anyhow, very cool to see it being played through. I should try it again :P

"Let me be the badass for once Raph" - Donny as the Turtles are sliding down the snow hill - TMNT, Michael Bay Movie ;).
To think that I only beat the dam ONCE in my childhood... well, at least I know I wouldn't have lasted much longer than that.
Way to go, Mike.
Wow! That got really intense at the end there but then Shredder is toast when using the scrolls of course.
I’m so surprised no one ever told you this. You can use subweapons on ladders. That probably would’ve really helped in Area 5.
You really made it, back at 1999 when I played it for the first time, this game was impossible, not anymore (and with this video of your stream you made me see it easier, the game is hard but after watching the video I was able to beat the game with some little troubles). Great Job as always. :)
Ninjas and Turtles, a combination no kid can refuse.
oh yeah, stage 5 is the best place to get scrolls.
Mike I love you
+Sinjin Van Cleef Did you know he actually has a 10 incher?
Sinjin Van Cleef well if you got it flaunt it
+Chairman Meow That's bad
+Laura Mimura dam I didn't expect that fact
much respect mike, no emulator no cheats and you edit the videos
The ppl who say this game sucks are the ones that suck at games and suck at life.
i love the squeaking of the directional cross on the controller!
26:02 wow I was certain you could only "jump" by walking from the top corridor o_o
Drove me completely harshly bonkers watching him pointlessly sip on that last drink of coke for the last hour and a half of the stream
I just beat this game today, it is so good, I never got past the dam level as a kid and I really struggled today but I made it!!!! I was as nervous as Mike was at the end hahaha
You should tag this with ASMR. Your voice becomes really mild and soothing when you're thinking out loud. It's rather zen.
Hey Mike, you should leave the viewer question parts in the video. I noticed you have been editing them out in a lot of these videos but I miss them!
Height leave out the comments reviews cause he wants you to see more gameplay😊
fave line: "I don't mind getting hurt, I just don't want to die." SO true! >_
Bravo!
Mike is more entertaining when he's raging during frustrating moments lol.
The masochism people are willing to go through is rediculous. And that goes for both the ones playing as well as the ones watching.
Wow. Those scrolls just annihilated Shredder! Way to go, Mike!
It's August 10, 2019. Watched this whole video after Cinemassacre released the TMNT movie review. Mikey, glad you beat it. I was never able to pass the turtle van part. Didn't know I needed missiles.
This video is a great addition to TH-cam. Thanks for doing it.
You make all these games look so easy, I go home and try and get annihilated.
It took me 4 years to beat this game, from 1987-1991. It's almost disappointing to know how hard it is to get to Shredder, and to beat him all you have to do is pound him with scrolls.
Anyway, I'm glad Mike played this game. AVGN always underrated this game.
i love these game plays as i can get to see the whole game as i would never be able to complete them.
+James Lostrappo (bigfloppyluigi) Same here I was crap at NES games :P
Yea I was bad at this too. The stupid electrified seaweed was the bane of my existence back then.
Nothing beats retro games. Especially Nintendo.
How to make the game easier
1: Your jump height is controlled by how long you hold the jump button and if you are doing a forward jump, if you touch the ceiling, it takes away your momentum and you will drop straight down like a rock.
I can't believe I learned something new. I have had this game down to a perfect rythem but never knew I could switch turtles.
Some versions of this game, like the PC-DOS version can't even be completed without using passwords to jump levels cause of bugs.
Mike had all the turtles alive, unbelievible.
I really love these videos. I would rather watch this than tv any day of the week lol.
dude looked like he didn't even wanna be in his own video lol This is hilarious!
Now THAT'S you play TMNT. Bravo Mike!
1:54:38 - I never die there. I was flabbergasted that he was so nervous about it. I wonder if it's somehow possible to get any of the items in the trap rooms.
Btw, you don't need scrolls to beat the game. I did it without them.
+Alessandro Maniscalco Of course but it's MUCH easier with scrolls.
+Warrax Of course. But in the end he didnt even use half of his scroll stock.
That was a very entertaining run Mike. Thanks for doing these. They're always a blast to watch.
Last minutes are pretty nervous... So much tension but great job in the end !
Mike and his inflections at the end of each sentence, reminds me of Stewie in Family Guy where he rips the piss out of people that do it. Lol
