You should go for it! I just picked one up and I cant stress how good it feels to shoot. Every single frame I shot from my first roll was in focus and properly exposed, and the advance lever is awesome!!
A Pentax 17 video from someone who actually put some thought into its potential strengths instead of just shooting wannabe 4x5 compositions on experimental color film and griping about results ! Are we sure this is TH-cam? Great shots, great thought process
the way the focus works on this camera makes me think of ricoh's snap focus. Especially with the way the lens activates after pressing down the shutter and just jumps to position.
I been shooting it since the 30th of August around Melbourne. P mode and zone focus is the way to use it. Shooting my 32nd roll of film today in Melbourne
I just don't understand the hate Pentax 17 gets (especially from elitists & keyboard warriors, maybe?) This video is clear example of the versatility of the 17. I mean, sure it's not a SLR. But there are many who also don't want a SLR but prefer a rangefinder, there are many who prefer a medium format over full frame. So no camera will cater to everyone's needs. But it's evident how nicely developed & packaged the Pentax 17 is. We the film community are lucky to have this as a brand new film camera in 2024. I laugh at some of the youtube videos which puts it down, just because they didn't get a model to try out from Pentax. Ohh course, for the more seasoned & serious photographers, I wish Pentax developes the premium point & shoot compact which they had earlier promised as part of their Film photography project.
I mostly agree with the other person who replied: people wanted an SLR. I think they wanted a contax t2 type camera, or an SLR, with ultra modern features but also with thrift store pricing. The pricepoint here is perfect. The camera has enough control while also not being full manual. It stretches your film use by being half frame. This camera is perfect for what it is and I also am heavily interested in one.
Great to see you again Hashem! Wonderful review of the Pentax 17 as it has highlighted its capabilities when used the way it's designed to be used. Hope to see you again soon-er.
Thank you so much!!! I've been struggling with this camera since I got it this summer. But your advice to use 100 fine grain film has made all the difference! As always, your videos are fantastic. Thanks again!
Hey, no problem! Really happy to hear this feedback 😄I just shot a roll of grainy high-speed film in it, and the difference is big. Looking forward to trying Ektar sometime.
@@pushingfilm My first roll of Ektar was amazing! I was ready to give the camera away at that point :) And the half-frame set up makes the expensive film not so expensive after all. Thanks again!
Great video, and I personally think the camera is great also. It’s so refreshing to not be carrying around a big heavy setup. I’ve been really impressed with all of the shots I’ve taken on it. Even shooting something with more grain is great on half frame. It really accentuates that you’re shooting film. Nice and gritty!
Thanks for your impressions. It’s such a fun camera to use especially for street and casual. I’m surprised how quickly passers by identify it as a film camera at a glance. I just received the half frame mask from Andrew at Essential Film Holder so ready to do my first scan after relying on the local lab the last couple of months. On the film front, it’s not surprising I’m finding ISO 400 the most flexible when you’re uncertain of what lighting to expect. I’m off to Japan for a holiday soon and decided just to shoot B&W in the Pentax. Picked up a couple of rolls of JCH Streetpan 400 for the first time. Reasonably fine grained apparently but the high contrast of it should be interesting. Add some punch to my Japanese street photos.
Nice work man I took mine out yesterday to the streets, so easy and fun to shoot with. Results have been great, I am loving the lens character so far and just enjoyable to document the daily adventures with.
I really like the concept of this camera. I took one for a trial and it was a solid performer and the results were better than I expected. Although it has been made for a particular market and of which I am not part of. I really struggled with the half frame, call me old fashioned but I am full frame and MF type of person - perhaps it is what I am accustomed with? I get it and may be it depends on entirely what I am photographing. Everyone has their own needs and opinions. I would be interested if Pentax bring out a full frame, which I suspect they will then that is different. You always mention in your videos for ideas for you to do. I recently purchased a whacky and peculiar lens. MS-OPTICS Sonnetar 50mm f1.3 by Miyazaki Kogaku. There is very little material on his range of lenses. I may have said it already but they are really quirky lenses. Very hard to get hold of, as it is a one man shop producing all the lenses. My focussing barrel for example, does not turn straight but instead at a slight angle lol. They are all made by hand and imperfect, however they produce some really unusual images and I love it. I will let you look in to it.
I'd love to see an Ektar video with it! Everyone was so critical of it for half frame. But, the lens is damn sharp and new film is mostly fine grain. I want one!
These are fantastic street shots, just good images. Obviously the P17 did inspire you and is a good street photography tool. But it's the photographer who makes these amazing shots.
Great video as usual - this is timely as I just watched the rollei 35 from mint review as well. The thing that gave me pause re the Pentax was the half-frame = reduced quality, so glad that there are ways to mitigate that. I’m curious to see how nicely the built in flash plays with triggering an external flash, and whether there’s a preflash and flash compensation.
Thank you! Yeah, I think the potential gets underestimated. I only used the "P" flash mode in the video, but should have experimented with the daylight sync/fill mode. It would also be interesting to try it with an external or secondary flash!
Great job with the Pentax, Hashem! Yes, the 200 ISO and below films are good recommendations for this camera. Can you clarify why half pressing the shutter is a good trick? Sorry I didn’t understand. FYI you’re a brave man using the flash in your last set of shots! No one got mad lol? 😉 Thanks for sharing your experiences with this camera. 🎉
Thanks Anthony! There's a little added delay while the lens electronically moves into position for each shot. So half pressing in anticipation mitigates that delay (and presumably takes the meter reading). Haha, no one got mad. It's always a possibility... but the flash is tiny on the 17. And I try to be mindful about the context that I'll fire it. Crowded situations are easier too.
Not sure you shot with color film already, I'd love to see more on color photos. I happened to look at samples on some website not long ago those color photo samples weren't so good, maybe more of that photographer's skill than camera. Your photos look sharp. Thank you for the video.
Nice video. Very sharp result on half image and I would like to have the camera. I would like to ask that the images taken by the camera on video, how do I get the black frame line? Is that frame a preset or a template? I hope to use it
This is an important video for the P17! Every video I’ve seen for the camera calls it a beginner’s camera, but you just shown that theres more to it than getting back in shooting film.
I'm more and more convinced that this should be my first film camera! For the newbies, what is that yellow-ish filter that you're using? Why do you use it? Thanks 🙌
Hey, the yellow filter is for use with black and white film. It effectively adds contrast in most outdoor situations by lightening yellowish tones (skin, buildings, etc) and darkening blueish ones (sky etc)
Nice vid as aways, Hashem. It's a really nifty, easy to use camera. With a lens with a low max aperture like this wouldn't it make more sense to use a higher speed film like Ultramax/Fuji 400? Why would a lower speed film work out better?
Thanks man! I've always liked low-mid speed films for half-frame, ever since using my Canon Demi. With a top shutter of 1/350 on the P17, that's more incentive. It also helps to keep the relative grain size smaller if you want more detail. And f/3.5 aperture is big enough for almost anything (until the flash comes in). You also get more effective depth of field with half-frame, which is another reason in my books. But, if you're predominantly shooting low light/overcast, 400 ISO would be good.
@@pushingfilm That makes sense. I used to put low speed film in my Hexar AF because of the 1/250 shutter speed but that was f2 so had more chance of working indoors. Guess I could just use flash more.
I was around the same spots on grand final day but didn't spot you - maybe the pentax 17 is too stealthy ;) Love the look of the camera, but considering I have a GR3 there's a bit too much overlap between. Thanks for the video.
You may have changed my mind about that camera. Those shots are so sharp. I didn't realize you could print half frame that large. Thanks for sharing Hashem. 😀
That's correct. But the half press moves the lens into the chosen focus position electronically before each shot. So pressing it early can reduce the shutter lag when you want more precise timing on the street.
@pushingfilm kinda weird they didn't just make it move mechanically or just put AF. great video. this is the best fotos ive seen taken with the 17 on youtube.
I'm early! (first?) I've been experimenting with the 17 lately as well, but as more of a "dad camera". It's fun but I'm definitely not used to the focusing system.
The more I see the results from this camera, the more I want one.
It has high potential!
I brought mine in August, it's a really great lens and nice camera

The hate the Pentax 17 got at launch seems to extremely unfair a couple of months after.
The hate was people wanting a SLR not a point and shoot. Pentax got marketing right as they targeted the younger people who are shooting film
