  • Is This The Best Budget Wild Camping Tent ? The Vango Tempest 200 Review !
Is this the best budget wild camping tent ? In my opinion, this is up there with the best both in terms of value for money and quality.
I've owned this tent for almost 9 years. I have used top of the range Hillebergs and also mid range tents, therefore I believe I am in a good position to provide an honest and unbiased review.
The Vango Tempest 200 is a great tent for the money - it has a lot of useable space, great features, a roomy porch for cooking in bad weather and is easily pitched. Watch my review and find out more.

Flysheet: Protex RS - Strong, durable fabric, now with a ripstop weave providing 13% more strength. Waterproof to a hydrostatic head of 5000mm.
Yunan Eco Alloy Poles - Extremely high quality poles made with acid free processing by Yunan. These poles provide excellent strength in high winds as well as being very light.
Tunnel tent - Style provides greatest space to weight ratio
Flysheet and inner pitch together - Quick and easy to pitch and pack
Venturi Vent System - Combination of air flows creates a more comfortable environment by reducing the build up of condensation. Air in the porch is drawn upwards as wind flows through the vent. Air moves from the rear of the tent to replace displaced air
Patented Vango TBS® II Tension Band System - increases tents performance in adverse conditions, especially in strong, changeable winds. When tensioned, the bands brace the pole at 3 points, and prevent sideways movement. Adjust TBS® II to remove slack. Do not over tension, as this may deform the poles. Can be stowed away in calm weather. Patented EP1905927
Porch groundsheet - Clean, dry storage area for boots and equipment
70 denier, 6000mm lightweight polyester groundsheet - Waterproof, durable and reliable
Breathable polyester inner - Allows condensation to pass through, for a comfortable night's sleep
Rain stop flysheet doors - Structured so that rain will not drop into the inner when opened
O-shaped inner doors - Easy to open with one hand
Part mesh inner door - Allows ventilation, whilst keeping bugs out
Flysheet door vent - Open from the top to ventilate porch
Inner pockets - Conveniently positioned pockets for organising essential items
Fast pack tent bag - Oversized opening for easy packing and compression straps to control pack size
Line-Lok guyline runners - Lock securely, simple to release and high performance in all conditions
Multiple reflective points - On pegging points for visibility in low light
Vivid reflective high strength guylines - Provides high visibility in low light
Factory taped seams - All flysheet and groundsheet seams are factory taped, giving a water tight seal
Weather tested beyond the European standard EN5912 by certified test centre
Fire retardant fabrics - Exceeds European EN5912 safety standard
Colour coded poles for easy pitching

Picked it up in a charity shop and it's been incredible - very stable and waterproof. Vango don't get the credit they deserve, not being one of the fashionable names in tents and more often associated with the D of E end of the market but this has to be one of the best tents I've owned for three season backpacking, It is quick and easy to put up in foul weather, has a massive porch for gear and foul weather cooking and is way way cheaper than some competitor brands. It might be 500g heavier than its competitors but is about 25 % of the price and to my mind, just as tough. Highly recommended kit for British conditions.

For me, it's the second best budget tent Ive ever seen.
If Vango had put a side entrance in this tent and god only knows it's about time they did..... loose that bloody orange they're so glued too and made the inner the same colour as the outer, then I'd have it.
Until they do, I'm sticking with my Coleman Avior X2 that I've used for well over a decade now.
I do love this tent though.
It's sooooo close to perfect for me I could cry.
Oh well... guess I'll keep on looking and hoping.
(At 57, my time for finding perfection is running short now. But isn't that every campers constant never ending gripe lol)

The interior with that rear vertical wall supported by the pole looks like a plus to me that makes it roomy and would maybe mitigate snow loading or strong winds pressing the fly down on the inner if properly pitched. Looks like a good tent at a good price.

I've had one for a while and it is pretty good. I wanted something lighter, so I donated it to my brother's scout troop to encourage some of the youngsters into wild camping. Should keep them well housed and is big enough for two scouts.

*For me the best budget and quality will always be Military Surplus*
    - Canvas tents which are much more durable and easier to repair if needed.
    - For as little as £25 / £35 and up to £50 from sites like Military Mart
    - Doesnt cook you when the sun rises in the morning
    - Keeps light down so you are not seen (from tent lighting internally) AND you can sleep in (the sun shine doesn't wake you)
    - thicker sound when raining - eaier to sleep
    - Stronger against wind
-Finally and the most important to me - synthetic tarps and tents Reflect light just way too much and are a dead give away from even long distances, thereby eliminating the aspect of wild camping and LNT - if you have reflective materials like polyester and nylon then you may as well go ahead and have a 5 foot fire that night.
Other than that, thanks man for the video, if I ever wanted to try out a synthetic tent this one looks the one to go for
    Cheers

Love this tent. We bought one about 8 years ago for walking Hadrians Wall. Yes ok for me and the wife, but not sure about me and a mate. TBS system works a treat (you can also hang wet socks to dry lol). We had TBS on a larger Vango tent and after a very windy night on a campsite in Weymouth, we were the only ones still standing (there were wrecked tents everywhere). Still have this tent, just need an excuse to use it.

Great tent review Chris, was impressed by the bird song in your garden. Good to see a professional camper having inserted his tent pegs at 45 degree angle. On my ML assessment a great deal of how you pitched your tent could certainly help to gaining a pass. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

It's a great tent Mike, I'd recommend it for beginners. Good observation re the tent pegs, though with the lawn being as dry as it is - I could have done with a hammer drill to get them in! Lots of people get caught up in what the tent can cope with in terms of weather, when in reality - good site selection will enable even budget tents to keep you safe when the weather turns.

I find the Tempest to be a great tent, have mine for 4 years, it was a ‘toss up’ between a Banshee 200 and this, best choice, really wanted it for pack size to fit on my motorcycle for European tours and here in the UK, i’m 6’ 2” and it’s no problem, I did buy the Tempest Footprint for extra peace of mind in case of wild camping. overall very happy, Excellent vid Chris, great commentary and no loud music, perfect. thanks for sharing 👍😃

I think the Vango Scafell edges this - a bit lighter, taller in the rear, more foot room.

I had a tunnel tent 30 years ago and used to take the two lads camping and I always loved that type of tent. To be honest, we always car camped, so weight and size were not issues and in those days it was quite a heavy tent. Love the all in one pitch, no wet inner and the set up was surprisingly easy, not as I remember that type of tent at all. Looked so roomy and great to be able to separate sleeping area and cooking porch with the benefit of top opening vent allowing steam to escape which you say dry. It looks a great tent and very well demonstrated, cheers Alan

Great review. I have the newer version which as far as I can see has the better bag, as you mentioned, and a different rear vent set up which doesn’t need roping. Other than that it’s the same tent with the same great features. I’m in Tasmania so the weather can be either hot or really cold. I’ve used this tent in both and was really happy (and safe from the weather) in both. Used in the winter here walking the Overland Track (5 day hike) across the Tasmanian highlands in very bleak cold and snowy weather, and was comfortable and dry inside. I also use a Vango self inflating sleeping mat and a Vango sleeping bag! Can’t fault the quality of the kit 😁I’m 6’2” and instead of sitting in the porch cooking I unclipped the inner for a bit more room. I also use a Tempest 300 ground sheet with the tent which extends nicely into the porch and can be tucked inside to stop drafts or really bad weather getting in. Cooking in the porch with the Trangia 25 was great with good safe head space as well. Thanks again for the vid. Cheers 👍

Great, honest review mate. I got one of these for just under £90, 8 or 9 years back without doing any research, bought last minute for a trip, and really love it! I tend to use a Zephyros 1 for most wild camp outings now to save a bit of pack weight, but have had many great nights in the Vango Tempest 200, and appreciate the extra room :-) it will be getting out to the peak dist. again soon. for the money it's an awesome, well thought out tent. I got this tent in the 300 version. I'm yet to use it in serious conditions. It seems to get very hot tbh. Do you know why the mesh is only on a small part of the front door? Why not have the choice of having a mesh door for the whole thing rather than the top semi circle 🤔

Enjoyed the video watched it as just spent my 2nd year cycle touring with a Bergaus Peak pro 1 man tent, which never let me down, but with 4 panniers, now last year only 2 it was just too small for all the equipment. The Bergaus is also a 2part tent so constantly having to realign the inner and outer which is pretty easy but when your being eaten alive by midges it is something you do not need. The porch is ideal for all my gear and it is something I think is essential. like you I make You Tube videos so I carry a lot of electronics which have to be inside the tent, so a very small spaced tent just became far to tight but i can store them in the porch with this. Cooking in the porch is a also ideal, not just for rain but when them midgies are out means you are not restricted to cooking earlier before they are out in force. It seems a great tent although I would prefer something higher but cycle touring really can restrict options as I now run with 4 panniers and even though I am weight conscience it is quite a load, something will be dropped but this tent will make life on the road so much easier, more room in the tent for me, with all my gear secure in a nice dry porch

Hi Chris, I am a huge Vango fanboy and have had a number of Vango and F10 tents in my time. Used to be insane value for money but can't help noticing that the quality has dipped a tiny bit with more recent models, so I hope that's just a glitch. Lightwave tents are pretty high quality and I have a few of them also. Recently bit the bullet and bought the ultimate "Marmite tent" - namely the TN laser comp 1. Feels very very flimsy, but if we ever get out of lockdown, we'll see how it rolls. On some big Scottish days out, i'm gravitating towards hooped bivys. Getting to old for lugging stuff. ATB mate, stay safe.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi mate, yeah - I've heard reports that newer models aren't up to the same standards... I know my original Equinox 250 was built like a tank and it's still going strong now, I gave it to Walshy.
I agree with you re lighter weight - its much more pleasant walking up with lighter gear, but hey when we add wine and craft beer, it negates any light weight tent that money can buy.
Hope you get out soon with your new gear pal - ATB 👍

Cracking tent Chris and more than enough for most wild campers. I had a Banshee for a few years and never had any issues with it. I sold it for the same price I bought it for and had many great nights out. It’s high winds that are the real issue and that’s why I went for the Soulo in the end, helped by your detailed review. I guess that most people won’t go out all through the year though so this tent is a great choice. I hope you are well mate. Keep safe, ATB Jiffy 👍🏻

Thanks for watching mate. Walshy has the Banshee and gets on well with his. I've had the Tempest up in some pretty foul weather and it has been okay. I have just bought two Vango tents at bargain prices. I got a Torridon 200 and a Nemesis 300 as I suspect we'll all be doing camping holidays this year. Can't see my wife and daughter wanting to cram in to my little one person tent or bivvy bag so bought the Vango's to enable us to hopefully holiday this year.. Both are 4 season tents so I'll probably use them for some winter camping also.

I had bought a halfords 20quid special with porch for a future planned wild camp up at Red Tarn with my teenage son but now I am thinking I would be better in one of these. Bushman and Blue latest video brought me here. I wonder if this Vango tent would stand up to the latest trip you did at Red Screes. That looked horrendous weather. I've owned a Tempest 200 for a few years now and found it to be an excellent tent. I'm 6'2" (188cm) and I still find the tent long enough. When I'm in my sleeping bag my feet don't quite reach the end of the tent inner and I still have room for a small pillow or wad of clothes under my head. As it's taken some pretty heavy downpours without leaking I now feel I can trust it to keep me dry. I'm now desperately looking forward to the lockdown easing enough for me to go bikepacking without worrying about getting arrested. I would hesitate to wild camp in something this big. For that I use a British army Goretex bivvi bag that is long enough to cover my head completely.

I bought a trespass battuta 2 person about a month ago, cracking little tent! One that's gone well under the radar I reckon, I proper trawled the internet for the best value lightweight trekking tent I could find. Weighs bang on 2k with the crappy steel wire pegs they send with it, so can be quite a lot less with ali ones. It's 3,000 hh so should cope with most of what the elements throw at it (only bought for 3 season anyway)
It's got got 2 doors and I can sit up in it with 4 inch to spare and I'm a 6 footer.
Only had it set up on some spare land locally and not properly used yet but so far I'm well impressed.. . Even more so by the price....half bat direct from trespass, should've been £140, got for 70 notes!! Happy camper 😀 I'm taking it out in the field on a high level 2 nighter as soon as is practicable, will let you know my verdict after that.

Great review and a nice tent. I've become abit of a fan of small Vango tents as I have just got a Banshee 200 and a Nevis 200. This one reminds me of my first tent, a Lichfield apache 2. The only thing with that one was it was pitch inner first and 1/3 heavier that the vango .
    Great video, Just sub'd

Hi Doug, firstly - thanks so much for the sub - really appreciate that, second - yes it's a great tent, for the money - it offers a lot of space and features. The Banshee is a cult classic! I'm interested in the Scafell 200 + but my tent collection is getting out of control 😂 ATB 👍

Hey, could you tell me which you would recommend? I've been looking at a tempest, Nevis, cairngorm and banshee. The Nevis is less waterproof I think?

Quick question mate if you don't mind. This still a worth while tent if I can get hold of one? getting together a few bits and pieces to get into the camping (wild maybe) game and rate you reviews. Found a second hand one at a very god price, got a tiny hole in the lower part of the opening front panel. Worth a shot though you think, or better buying brand new full price? Keep up the brilliant videos.

    Ste

Good review as usual Chris. I've owned a vango helix and a vango blade and I've found you can never go too far wrong with a vango. Do you own any tent under 1 kg I'm just wondering.

Hi Ciaran, yes they do make decent tents and good value for money. I own the Helium 100 SL - which is very close - possibly just over 1KG. ATB 👍

I was looking for a review of this tent and came across your channel. Very glad I did, and excellent video. Just a quick question about the tent and that is how difficult is it to pitch in rough weather? Living in Scotland this is pretty much an occupational hazard

Hi, it's quite easy as it's not too big.... Just make sure you attach one guy line to your rucksack to stop it blowing away, then peg it out flat first, put poles in after it's pegged out and you'll be fine! Have a practice a few times in garden on windy days to get the feel of it.

Great vid mate! I’ve been torn between this and the 300, I’m 6ft and about 13.5st, looks like this is about spot on size wise for a solo wild camp! Do you think it would also do the job for the odd single night wild camp with my missus? She’s only petite at 5ft 2 and about 7st wet through!

I think you'd both get in okay mate - if you get along well it should be fine ;-)

Excellent review, you promoted a good budget tent to those looking to get in to wild camping very well, I have the Helvellyn 200 only used it once up to now but hope to get out in it before the year is out, Stay Safe, Les, Liked and subscribed.

I didn't get whether you can actually lie down to sleep in the sleeping area with the inner closed. Be good to see your sleeping mat and bag and pillow etc to see the set up.

I absolutely can mate - I'm six ft dead on - it's no problem at all. The dimensions are also freely available on the Vango website
