As a beginner to wild camping and whatnot, I'm trying to kit myself and my son. We're having a blast, but these wee videos are handy to show us what we can get, or do we need. Not sure if it will be a long-term hobby but we're trying to get fit and have fun.

Hello Dan , I think at the end of the day , The most Important item for Camping has to be a good Tent , and a quality Sleeping Mat / Bag , Money well spent on these two items is well woth it , another great video mate , shows that you can get some bargains if you shop around , Be Well my Friend , best wishes to you and the Family . 😊👍

Good advice about putting the money into the tent, mat, and sleeping bag. Most of us can find a suitable cook kit in our home kitchens. The portable gas cooker meets any needs...except for a 'homey' fire.

Dan I watched your video a year on its release and my opinion of your “MAT?” Is it doesn’t matter which side is facing you…the rocks will be easy to feel under your aching back…😂! I thought up another use for the mat it would be a good sun shield for the front window of my truck in the hot Tucson, Arizona sun😊!
Your tent would be good to collect water on the desert floor in an emergency 😮!
    Have a great day!

I bought a Yellowstone one man hiking tent a few years ago as my first wild camping tent, it has a mesh inner and a green fly sheet, cost me about £30 and it's absolutely brilliant. I've sealed the seams and proofed it with Nik Wax tent proofer, used it loads of times even though I now have a good upgrade. That blue tent looks like it might put people off, all that condensation, but the rest of the kit looked great. Thanks for uploading and glad you're feeling better.

  • @jamesellsworth9673

Foil side up...or down: it depends on the season. Foil side up is for warmth, and foam side up is for avoiding condensation to the extent that is possible.

Reflectix is best used to reflect heat. Up to 90%. But to do that it needs a few inches of airgap in front of it to "reflect" the heat back to you. That means you don't want to sleep directly on it because then you would be conducting heat through the metallic surface, which would not work so good. A few inches gap between you and the reflector is what you want mate.

Dan….you should have bought the horn in The Range….you could frighten away deer with it 😀. On another note, your comment about buying budget gear and if you don’t like it , throw it away !,! Sadly that’s what happened after the covid lockdowns were lifted, people bought crap gear and couldn’t be bothered packing up and taking it home, result was rangers and wardens having to clean up sites around Glencoe, Glen etive, Loch Lomond etc ( probably the same in the Lake District and the dales etc ) ? Once again, great informative video 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥾🥾

Nice 😊. These 'Budget' Posts are especially handy for those who wish to 'test the water'. At the very least, the kit can thereafter be relegated to back yard camping .. keeping the kids happy, safe and out of the adult's hair 😏.
Under €200.00 .. add a cheap waterproof Tarp / Tarpaulin to go over the tent, some other odds and sods and one would be good to go for most 3-season camping 'not too far from home / car' scenarios .. extreme weather excluded of course (that's what the Weather Bureau is for 😊).
Use a pull-along shopping / garden cart and one doesn't even have to carry anything. 'Condensation' .. a basic knowledge of School Physics / Physiology will enable one to figure that one out beforehand.
Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

If you’re a first time camper and on a budget…
    Don’t buy two stoves…
    Don’t buy a big gas cooker…
    Don’t buy a full set of pots…
Don’t buy an expensive tiny bag of freeze dried food…
    Don’t buy a super cheap tent…
Do your research, spend a £10 or £20 more and if you have to, put it away for a month and then buy the rest when you get paid again. You don’t have to buy EVERYTHING at once, especially if you’re on a budget.
As far as those raised fire stoves… don’t buy two and don’t even buy one. Just dig a little hole, collect some wood and make a little fire. Or don’t make a fire at all?
If you want to cook food then buy a cheap gas stove that you can screw on to the top of the canister and you only need like one pot. Most camping pots come in two pieces, so you can make a coffee or tea in the top part and cook some food in the bigger bottom part.
As far as food… just take a bag of microwave rice and a tin of curry or something to mix into it.
Never go by these “camping on a budget” videos because if you follow them, you’ll end up throwing it away and either having to spend MORE money on better stuff or you’ll just be put off camping all together.
Your best bet is to watch multiple camping channels and look at who camps in areas that resemble where you’re from/plan on camping and then just buy a bit of gear they use (after doing some research on it) every month or so. Get the basics first so you can start camping straight away… a tent, a mat and a sleeping bag.
If you have to go in your cupboards and take a little saucepan, then do that instead of buying all the pots straight away.

@@englishwoodsman I understand, but why would they need two fire stoves?
      A full set of pots?
And why would they want to spend money on a tent that they likely won’t use again due to the condensation.
I think this video should have made it clear… “you know what… it’s probably cheaper in the long run you buy one good tent instead of buying multiple bad tents”.

I go foil side down with those foam things, I got one and used it once, it's in the camp cupboard now. I am looking more towards the tarp set ups now and even though I've got better hammocks now, I'll keep them for dense woodland in autumn/winter camps. I now put all bedding into a bivvy bag even in a tent. It saves a swampy night in some cases. I see where you're coming from- good idea. I think now buying camp gear bit by bit rather than all at once like that and get summer camping kit in winter out of season as it's cheaper so by summer you've got decent kit and spread the cost. I found a new online shopping thing like Ali Express and I've got a few decent bits from there. Took less than a month to arrive from China too. Called TEMU.

Been thinking about the condensation issues that we all have at some stage. During the warmer months, how about using a USB fan and help draw the warmer air out of the tent? Obviously during winter you don't want that but I've seen one or two others try it and say it's very good at reducing the amount of water in the tent. We on average are supposed to breath out roughly 1 pint of water every night....

You dont need tons of kit, remember you need to cary it. Its good to have a few spares, just incase of failure. I have seen these flat stoves but are bulky if you need to xary everything everywhere.
I tend to use tranjia 27 or campinggaz bluet 200 c stove it does most things and gaz lamp.

I was looking at getting one of those fire pits, but what do you do with all the ashes afterwards ?

  • @thetattooedangler
    @thetattooedangler ปีที่แล้ว

Other than the gas stove, and maybe the fire pit, I honestly don't think I'd want to take any of this stuff into the wild with me. I wouldn't advise that anybody looking to get into camping use it either. Spending £161 for kit that you either can't use safely or can only really use once is going to put everybody off. Better to do a bit of bargain hunting and buy tested and reliable gear that won't let you down

Daley Outdoors did it for £150. Can it be done for less than £100
