I would do what dapper is going but I'd do a combo of melee and rang attacks and use what is most appropriate at the time I also think the kobold is a really good flavor choice as well
I think this is a fun build, but I also think that Peace cleric 1 at level 4 and archery is a better option. Also, glad to see our discussion from the comment section last video made it in!
I think my build would be Giff using Gun (if available) or Heavy Crossbow Sharpshooter, piercer, Asi If I can get the Dragonlance background or a strip haven background Ranger 3 (use favored enemy and uncanny) Peace cleric (Use Bless as new concentration spell) Ranger to 8 (Take both feats) Monk 1 Ranger to 15 Phantom Rogue 3
Slasher/Crusher/Piercer is preferential but being Small presents an opportunity to use Lance & Shield. Personally I'd go for 1 level into Order Domain Cleric & target Drake with Feather Fall or Silvery Barbs, neither of which is provided to either Ranger or Clerics, but acquired from a Strixhaven Student Background. Fuel this with Spell Points instead of Spell Slots to keep summoning Drake at a minimum, as well as Drake's Breath. I'd personally choose Chef Feat to provide a buffet of treats Drake can use their BA for.
Funnily enough just two weeks after this video came out I got into a new compaign and am playing a drakewarden now. We just got to level 3 last session so I'll actually have my subclass now. However I plan on doing a mostly melee ranger (the only other frontliner we have is a paladin, so I can't stay back with our rogue, wizard and sorcerer). Luckily my DM will allow the drake to move on my turn instead of after it, so I will be doing mounted combat after level 7.
If i were to spend the last 5 lvs freely. Id take 2 lvs of Shepherds Druid for the totem because its always good, and 3 levels of Rune Knight. Because then both my pet and I can be Large big boys wrecking town together.
Peace Cleric dip is really good on Drakewarden in tier 1. It keeps the Drake's damage really consistent. There becomes a problem later on however where the Drake's non-magical bite attack is essentially useless. That doesn't mean the Peace Cleric dip becomes bad, just that you switch the buff from your drake to another ally.
To mukticlass into or out of Ranger, you need a 13 in both Dex and Wis. Your table may ban certain things due to their strength but that is not a blanket rule
lol, I meant I ban silvery barbs and twilight. They are OP, IMO. But early in the video, you mentioned that rangers had to have a dex of 13. I was clarifying that it is only need for multiclassing.
Melee mounted drakewarden doesn’t work if your dm doesn’t allow the drake to go on your turn instead of after. You’ll never be able to move while mounted until after you take your action.
It's true that there's a little ambiguity to that, but the reality is that you're never going to play in a game (or want to) with a DM that doesn't let you train your Drake as a mount, to let you use it as a controlled mount by seventh level
Yeah this is a good point. The rules with intelligent mounts are weird and I personally don't know anyone who uses them as written. I feel like what I did is a pretty safe assumption that most DMs would allow
That's tough. I am a bit sticky with most rules as well but this is one that, in my opinion, gets in the way of fun so I don't do it as written and I have observed many people who do the same. Rule of cool wins the day for me I suppose
How are you going from a 17 to a 19? You mean a 15 to a 17? If your using point buy you cant higher than 15 before bonuses. Just curious how you got your numbers.
Like I say in all of my videos, it is a modified standard array. I have using this for years and others use similar like the Dungeon Dudes and others. Your table may be different, in which case adjustments may need to be made
I had to check another video of yours to make sure it wasnt just a one time mistake but no, its here too. You're doing lvl1 stats wrong. You're starting every character with 3 more stat points than theu should have. It looks like youre using the Standard Array, but just with a racial bonus already applied. The correct lvl1 stat array before the racial bonus is 15/14/13/12/10/8
Like I say in my videos, it is a modified standard array. I have been using it for years, Dungeon Dudes use something similar and so do several others on YT and elsewhere. Everyone does stats different so it is likely that adjustments would have to be made anyway. Thanks for the comment!
The features that Paladin provides are nice but for multiclassing purposes it is a nightmare. You'll need a 13 in 4 different stats which means we have to dump CON and that is pretty rough. Can it still work? Of course, it just makes it a little tougher.
Summon elemental can actually be flavoured as your drake's breath weapon animatig
I approve of this reflavor

That certainly works as well!

True, Peace Cleric 1 is dope. One can even start there for Wis saves.

Well that worked out! Yeah most DMs allow that to work that way for the sake of fun even though it's not RAW
I wanted to build a Fire Emblem Manakete (Dragon shifter) and I guess Drakewarden could work (pet flavored as an extension of the PC).
im building a malig knight :)

I would go 19 Ranger/1 Peace or War. 5 lv Ranger spells AND 2 ASI are too much needed at this point (Tough, +2 Wisdom, Resilient Con, and such)

You only need the 13 dex if you multiclass into or out of ranger. You don't need it to be a ranger. PS. Twilight cleric and silvery barbs are banned

@@DapperSnapperGaming mines a stickler for hard written rules unfortunately. He needs so much convincing to change anything.

I had an idea for a Drake Warden build, but it fell apart because your Drake can’t be a Water Dragon.
It kinda can. You can absolutely flavor it as one and just summon it as cold most of the time.
If you use the UA Drakewarden it had a water variant I believe
Boost for the algorithm
What about Paladin
Cause it's Melee I think Paladin is Best use of Spell Slots

True @DapperSnapperGaming
But I Personally whould go for it
