Building a DIY Custom Laser Cut Table

    In this video I rework an older table to a DIY table made from marquetry done with a Glowforge Laser Cutter even though I am a beginner woodworker. Building my own custom table for these I wanted a slightly rustic look to the table and to have it be bigger to fit both my machines. Woodworking is a skill I am still working on and this fun woodworking projects was a fun way to learn a new skill I have not done before. DIY projects for woodworking are a great way to make money woodworking and to lean woodworking. Although this isn't a clear cut how to make a table video I think there are plenty of skills to apply to any woodworking project where you don't need a lot of tools. This is a nice hybrid of woodworking art and functionality. As I am still learning if there are any woodworking tips you have make sure to drop them in the comments below, especially for marquetry inlay for beginners. I am sure some people will also argue using a laser cutter is not woodworking but I think it is just another tool for your shop to use.

    Don't stop! I noticed you haven't made a video in a month, and I'm telling you, do not stop creating content. This channel has the potential to be something special. I promise if you keep at it, a year from now you'll be making a thank you video, as you hit your millionth subscribers. Whatever that *it* is, this channel has *it.* Keep thr content coming and I promise, this channel will become absolutely massive. All you need is that one video, with a catchy title to generate traffic. If this video were to of been titled *Butcher Block* I bet it would have received 10x the views. I'm in the process of doing a conversion van build. I've viewed alot of content related to it, and it's mind blowing how popular *Van Life* content is. Especially the DIY furniture. Do a diy butcher block table top, or something related to Van furniture; cabinet, table top, folding table, sink, etc. It doesn't have to be in your wheelhouse, but this is fantastic, and I'm absolutely going to attempt something similar. God had this had something like *Van Life* or *Conversion Van Furniture* in the title, it would have received a million views. Good luck man, don't stop!

    Width lost by cutting tool is your kerf width. There should be a setting where u can set your laser’s kerf width, then when making cuts you choose: inside cut, outside cut, neutral (on the line). Hopefully that helps you keep these awesome videos coming!

    Laminating a piece of wood with veneer is tricky. I suggest one of the following options for the next time you, or someone reading this, wants to laminate wood.
    Option 1, use "contact spray adhesive".
    1. Spray both your surface and the veneer.
    2. Lay down slats on the surface, and put your veneer on top of the slats. (tape facing upwards if you joined pieces of veneer together like in the video)
    3. Carefully remove the slats from the middle and stick down the veneer with a roller.There are special rollers for this, but maybe a dough pin would work too.
    Option 2, Do what you did but better.
    1. Cover the surface in wood glue. You could look into special glues for laminating, but regular wood glue is also fine. Make sure to distribute the glue evenly.
    2. Put the veneer onto the glue covered surface. (tape facing upwards if you joined pieces of veneer together like in the video)
    3. Lay a plastic bag or non-stick baking paper on top of the veneer and put a sheet of wood on top of that.
    4. Load the piece of wood with heavy things and weights. Try to evenly distribute the weight.
    This basically simulates a vacuum or hydraulic press.

    From past experience - you can use an iron with a piece of cardboard under it on all of your spots that the veneer didn't fully lay down on. Let the glue heat back up (you'll hear it bubbling and popping) and then find some weight to set on top until it can dry correctly. This is especially helpful if your veneer dries with waves in it.

  • @Knight-brolaire
    @Knight-brolaire 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If you want a good trick for gluing veneer down, apply titebond original (do not use titebond ii or iii for this) to the piece and the base, but don't connect them yet. Let the glue dry a fair bit, then tape the piece down, and iron the pieces onto the surface. The moisture/steam helps the glue become tacky again and it keeps pieces from curling up. I've done this on guitars and it works quite well.

    6:21 can you elaborate on how much you enlarge each piece to compensate for the kerf?

    • @Ideal_Idea
      @Ideal_Idea  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course! For my laser, I measured it out to be losing 1/64" of material on the test square, and that was across the entire thing so when I enlarged my final pieces I set an offset all around the part by 1/128" so that the having that smaller offset on every side, it would add up to the 1/64" that's lost. Each laser and material will be different so a test with that material will need to be run each time to see how much it needs to adjust by. Hopefully that is more clear.

    If you want to do something like this again, you may want to think about using 1/8th inch thick wood panels instead of the paper thin veneer you used here...
    The thicker wood should prevent some of your cutting and gluing problems because it shouldn't curl up nearly as much, it'll also give more surface area between joints for gluing/hiding joints...
    Assuming the LASER head can be angled, you might even be able to bevel the edges of the component pieces to make the joints MUCH easier to hide in the finished piece...

    • @Ideal_Idea
      @Ideal_Idea  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I try and read and respond to everyone especially if they have a question. Those are low profile magnets, they stick to the honey comb tray in the laser cutter and are used for two reasons, 1. they keep the veneer flat to be able to be cut as best as possible and 2. there is air assist to evacuate all the fumes and it will blow around lighter material like thin wood so they need to be held in place.
